Saturday’s game, Nov. 20 at Oct. 9 SAN JOSE STATE W, 21-6 4:00 p.m. PST, will take place at Martin Stadium in Pullman and will air live on ABC-TV to a regional audience Oct. 16 OREGON STATE L, 29-14 (see page two for more on TV coverage). Neither the Huskies or the Cougars (4-5 overall, 2-5 Pac-10) can earn Oct. 23 at USC (Fox Sports Net) L, 38-0 a bowl-game berth this season. In fact, this is the first Apple Cup since 1976 in which both teams entered the Oct. 30 at Oregon (Fox Sports Northwest) L, 31-6 game with losing records. That year, a 4-6 (going into the game) Husky team beat a 3-7 Cougar club, 51-32, in Nov. 6 ARIZONA L, 23-13 a game played in Spokane. Saturday’s game is also the Huskies’ final contest under head coach Keith Gilbertson, Nov. 13 CALIFORNIA L, 42-12 who will step down from his post following the season. The Huskies have won six consecutive Apple Cups, Nov. 20 at Washington State (ABC-TV) 4:00 p.m. dating back to a loss in 1997, and eight of the last nine. all times are Pacific and subject to change HUSKIES vs. COUGARS HISTORY: The Washington-Washington State series dates back to 1900, when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple 2004 PAC-10 STANDINGS Cup trophy. Prior to the institution of the Apple Cup trophy, the winner of the Washington-WSU game was Team Pac-10 Overall awarded the Governor’s Trophy from 1934 to 1961. Washington holds a commanding 63-27-6 edge in the 96- 1. USC 7-0 10-0 game series, including a 31-10 record in Apple Cup games. The UW is 14-11-1 in games played in Pullman 2. California 6-1 8-1 and 7-4-0 in games at Martin Stadium. Washington also holds a 13-3-0 mark in Spokane, where the Cougars 3. Arizona State 5-2 8-2 hosted many of their home Apple Cups in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The Huskies have won the last six Apple 4. UCLA 4-3 6-4 Cup games overall and have emerged victorious in Martin Stadium in each of their last four visits. Last year, 5. Oregon 4-3 5-5 Washington pulled a third-straight upset (by AP ranking) in the series when an unranked Husky team notched Oregon State 4-3 5-5 a 27-19 win over No. 8 Washington State. In the last Apple Cup played in Pullman, in a game that surely ranks 7. Stanford 2-5 4-6 as one of the most memorable ever in the series, Washington shocked the No. 3 Cougars with a triple- Washington State 2-5 4-6 overtime, 29-26 win, despite trailing by 10 with only 4:30 to play. Three seasons ago, when the two teams 9. Arizona 1-6 2-8 met at Husky Stadium, the 16th-ranked Huskies upset the No. 9 Cougars with a 26-14 win. Washington has 10. Washington 0-7 1-9 won 12 of the last 15 vs. WSU and 23 of the last 30. Despite being only seven miles or so down the road from Pullman during his three-year tenure as head coach at Idaho, Husky coach Keith Gilbertson never faced the LAST WEEK’S PAC-10 RESULTS Cougars as a Vandal. However, Gilbertson did square off vs. WSU three times during his four seasons in California 42, Washington 12 charge at California. The Bears went 1-2 in those three games: a 34-7 loss at Pullman in 1993, a 26-23 loss at USC 49, Arizona 9 Berkeley in 1994, and a 27-11 win at Berkeley in 1995. With UW’s win last year, Gilbertson holds a 2-2 record Arizona State 45, Washington State 28 against the Cougars as a head coach. Washington State's Bill Doba, in his second season as a college head UCLA 34, Oregon 26 coach, had obviously never faced Washington in that capacity before last season, making him 0-1 as a head Oregon State 24, Stanford 19 man against his cross-state rival. However, as an assistant, he has been on the winning sideline vs. the UW four times in 15 tries (1-0 as an assistant at Indiana in 1978 and 3-11 as a WSU assistant from 1989 to 2002). COMING UP IN THE PAC-10 Washington at Washington State (Nov. 20) DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washington’s oldest and longest rivalries are against the other Oregon at Oregon State (Nov. 20) three other northwest Pac-10 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 96 times, Oregon in 96 games and Oregon State on 89 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies Stanford at California (Nov. 20) lead the Ducks 58-34-5, Washington State 63-27-6 and Oregon State 57-28-4. Combined, Washington has a Arizona at Arizona State (Nov. 26) 178-89-15 (.658) record against its northwest rivals, including a sweep of all three in both 2002 and 2003. • Washington State at Washington Post-Game Quotes Husky Stadium Nov
Washington State at Washington Post-Game Quotes Husky Stadium Nov. 29, 2019 Washington Head Coach Chris Petersen Opening Statement: I’m really happy for the seniors, there are only so many groups of guys who can go through here and say they never lost to their rival. We played good team ball today, our defense did a great job once again, playing that ‘bend and don’t break’ defense, it’s about points and not yards. We forced turnovers, and they got one too but that made it a lot easier on us. We did a good job holding the ball, dinking and dunking, running the clock, and I’m just proud of how our kids finished. Did Washington State do anything different strategically from past games? They run the same offense every single game, and they do a great job of it. I thought our guys were patient and tackled well, I knew that was going to be a big key. Their guys are slippery and hard to tackle, but we did a good job of playing to that. How do you think Jacob Eason bounced back today? I thought we took a step forward with him. He set his feet a little better, he had some good balls. It is still hard against those ones that are really open with a chance to score. There was a lot of progress there for him. That is what it is about, progress and moving forward. Why did you have so much success going to your tight ends? We have good tight ends.

  • HUSKIES Heritage the Apple Cup Dogs and Cats
Heritage HUSKIES Heritage The Apple Cup Dogs and cats. Could there be a more natural rivalry? Huskies and Cougars. The annual Washington-Washington State matchup is definitely one of the best rivalries in college football today. Up for grabs each year is the Apple Cup, a trophy sponsored by the Washington State Apple Commission and presented by the state’s governor. The series dates back to 1900 when the teams played to a 5-5 tie in Seattle, but only since 1962 has the winner been awarded the Apple Cup. Washington holds a 61-27-6 record in the 94-game series, and is 29-11 in Apple Cup games. Like most rivalries, each game is a new chapter with unpredictable results, regardless of records, mo- mentum or history. It is a game based more on emotion and determination than scouting reports and talent. Though the schools are on opposite sides of the state, creating a geographic split among fans, the annual meeting splits the state in other ways — some- times between members of the same family. Such was the case in 1990 when Husky freshman Travis Hanson waged a personal kicking battle with his brother Jason, the Cougars’ All-American kicker. But while individual stories give the Apple Cup its The Apple Cup trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the game between Washington and character, its enormity and magnitude come from the Washington State. The Huskies lead the series 29-11 since it became known as the Apple Cup. number of times the game has determined Rose Bowl fate for either team.
