Unit 1 The European and Mediterranean world The Vikings In the late 8th century CE, Norse people (those from the North) began an era of raids and violence. For the next 200 years, these sea voyagers were feared by people beyond their Scandinavian homelands as erce plunderers who made lightning raids in warships. Monasteries and towns were ransacked, and countless people were killed or taken prisoner. This behaviour earned Norse people the title Vikingr, most probably meaning ‘pirate’ in early Scandinavian languages. By around 1000 CE, however, Vikings began settling in many of the places they had formerly raided. Some Viking leaders were given areas of land by foreign rulers in exchange for promises to stop the raids. They are sometimes referred to as Norsemen and known to the Greek as Varangians. They took two routes: the East - - the present-day Ukraine and Russia, and the West mainly in the present-day Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Normandy, Italy, and the British Isles. The Viking were competent sailors, adept in land warfare as well as at sea. Their ships were light enough to be carried over land from one river system to another. Viking ships The motivation of the Viking to invade East and West is a problem to historians. Many theories were given none was the answer. For example, retaliation against forced conversion to Christianity by Charlemagne by killing any who refused to become baptized, seeking centers of wealth, kidnapping slaves, and a decline in the profitability of old trade routes. Viking ship in Oslo Museum The Vikings raids in the East and the West of Europe VIKINGS IN THE EAST The Dnieber The Vikings of Scandinavia came by way of the Gulf of Finland and sailed up the Dvina River as far as they could go, and then carried their ships across land to the Dnieper River, which flows south to the Black Sea. They raided villages then they became interested in trading with the Slavs. Using the Dnieper, they carried shiploads of furs, honey, and wax south to markets on the Black Sea, or sailed across that sea trade in Constantinople. -

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’, 865–96
Clare Downham, University of Liverpool 2 Annals, armies, and artistry: ‘The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’, 865–96 ‘THE ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE’ from 865 to 896 is an engrossing description of affairs in England during the mature years of Alfred the Great, king of the West Saxons and then overking of the Anglo-Saxons (871–99). Much of the narrative is pre-occupied with the description of viking-campaigns, and it is a major source for understanding how vikings first came to conquer and settle English territory. Nevertheless, it is striking that the presentation of information in ‘The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’ for those years was influenced by stylistic and political considerations. These can provide important clues to the circumstances of the composition of annals 865 to 896. For the years 865–96 there seem to be two distinct phases of chronicling activity in ‘The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’. The first runs from A.D. 864/5 to 891/2 (annals 865–92) and belongs to the Chronicle’s ‘Common Stock’ (60 B.C.–A.D. 892), while the second constitutes its first continuation, for the four years 893– 6. Ruth Waterhouse has discussed the former section.1 She has drawn attention to the distinct word-order of annals 865–91 and the stylistic features (such as its verbs of motion) which distinguish it from what precedes and what follows.2 Peter Sawyer has argued persuasively that this section properly ends at 892 (not 891), which is therefore where that ‘Common Stock’ of the Chronicle ends.3 It is also in this section that the beginning of the year was calculated from September.4 1R. -

These relations evolved under conditions in which both countries understood and valued the need for cooperation, but also were aware of its limits and the dangers of too close a partnership. U.S. security dealings with Saudi Arabia are an extreme, perhaps unique, case of how security ties unfolded under conditions in which sensitivities to those ties were always a central —oftentimes dominating—consideration. This was especially true in the most delicate area of military assistance. Distinct patterns of behavior by the two countries emerged as a result, patterns that continue to this day. This dissertation examines the first twenty years of the U.S.-Saudi military assistance relationship. It seeks to identify the principal factors responsible for how and why the military assistance process evolved as it did, focusing on the objectives and constraints of both U.S. -

Russia-US power struggle for unpredictable Central Asia Nikola Ostianová Abstract: Th e article focuses on a struggle between the Russian Federation and the US for Central Asian countries states — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Th e time settings of the topic encompass period between the collapse of the So- viet Union and the year 2011. Th e paper focuses on a development of a politico-military dimension of the relation between the two Cold War adversaries and Central Asia. It is divided into six parts which deal cover milestone events and issues which infl uenced the dynamics of the competition of Russia and the US in Central Asia. It is concluded that despite of the active engagement of Russia and the US neither of them has been able to gain loyalty of Central Asian countries. Th e rivalry is characterised by Russia’s eff orts to maintain the infl uence on its former Soviet satellite states — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan — and the US interest in building yet another of its power bases — this time in the Central Asian region. You pull into the gas station, line up behind IT the car at the pump, and see there’s nobody there actually pumping gas. Maybe that driver is in the convenience store or the restroom or off wandering the neighborhood—who knows? But they’re not refueling; they are blocking the pump, heaven only knows how long they’ll be gone, and you still need gas. Frustrating? You bet. Now transfer that scenario to a parking garage or lot, swap out your SUV for a Nissan Leaf, and picture that gas pump as an electric vehicle (EV) charger that’s blocked by a car that’s not charging. The owner could come back in an hour or a day. There’s no way to tell. But it’s the only charger in the facility, and you need it. by Stuart Hill BACKGROUND The Anglo-Saxons settled in Britain from around 410AD. They originally formed many kingdoms which were led by individual leaders. Eventually, the Anglo-Saxons came together as one country ruled by one leader. Athelstan was crowned king of the Saxons in 925AD but didn’t become ‘King of the English’ until 927AD. The Battle of Brunanburh in 937AD was his greatest victory and confirmed England as an Anglo-Saxon kingdom. He was viewed as a great politician and a courageous soldier who was reported as never having lost a battle. Like many other Saxon leaders, much of his reign was spent fighting Danish invaders and other rebellions for control of the country. One of Athelstan’s greatest achievements was to unite England and to establish the boundaries of England, Scotland and Wales that still remain today. He also strengthened the laws of the country and established burhs (fortified towns) where trade could flourish. He could be described as ‘The First King of England’. Emerging as the rulers of only surviving Anglo-Saxon kingdom, Alfred and the subsequent monarchs of Wessex began a slow process of unifying the subjugated Anglo-Saxons under their banner and they desired to be acknowledged as the kings of England, rather than Wessex. By adapting traditional heroic values to contemporary political needs, literary works of this period similarly attempt to channel former tribal loyalties towards the monarch and propagandize absolute devotion to the survival and construction of ‘England’.
