    Codebook: Government Composition, 1960-2019 Codebook: SUPPLEMENT TO THE COMPARATIVE POLITICAL DATA SET – GOVERNMENT COMPOSITION 1960-2019 Klaus Armingeon, Sarah Engler and Lucas Leemann The Supplement to the Comparative Political Data Set provides detailed information on party composition, reshuffles, duration, reason for termination and on the type of government for 36 democratic OECD and/or EU-member countries. The data begins in 1959 for the 23 countries formerly included in the CPDS I, respectively, in 1966 for Malta, in 1976 for Cyprus, in 1990 for Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, in 1991 for Poland, in 1992 for Estonia and Lithuania, in 1993 for Latvia and Slovenia and in 2000 for Croatia. In order to obtain information on both the change of ideological composition and the following gap between the new an old cabinet, the supplement contains alternative data for the year 1959. The government variables in the main Comparative Political Data Set are based upon the data presented in this supplement.     Italia Viva, Party System Reform Morta Carlo Fusaro 2019-09-22T21:29:05 On 17 September 2019, Matteo Renzi, the former Prime minister and former leader of the Democratic Party (PD), has announced that he was quitting the party in order to establish a new one, with 26 deputies and 15 senators following him. The party has been christened Italia Viva (Lively Italy or Lebendig Italien), a name meant to imply an optimistic and voluntaristic approach to the future: economic growth rather than re-distribution, investments on education, family and innovation are supposed to be at the core of its program which should be presented, discussed and fine-tuned on 18 and 19 October in Florence when Renzi will gather his tenth Leopolda Meeting (from the name of the oldest railway station built in the Tuscan capital at the time when it still was under the rule of Grand Duke Leopold II of the House of Lorraine: the old compound has become a no-frills fair ground, and here the former Mayor of Florence has gathered his supporters every year since 2010). Symbolic attention to gender issues will be granted by nominating a woman and a man for each party leadership role. The move may certify both the end of the PD as it was meant to be as well as the end of a party system cycle started over 25 year ago. A struggle for stability Italy has been struggling with governance issues for decades. After WWII it has been known for the short duration of its cabinets (less than a year in average from 1948 through 1994; around 19 months thereafter), although until the electoral reform of 1993 every single cabinet had been supported by coalitions dominated by the Christian Democratic party and the Communist party, the largest in the West and considered unsuited to govern by all other parties, as a powerful opposition.

    Facebook Ads: Politics of Migration in Italy Arthur Capozzi?, Gianmarco De Francisci Morales, Yelena Mejova, Corrado Monti, Andr´ePanisson, and Daniela Paolotti ISI Foundation, Turin, Italy, isi.it Abstract. Targeted online advertising is on the forefront of political communication, allowing hyper-local advertising campaigns around elec- tions and issues. In this study, we employ a new resource for political ad monitoring { Facebook Ads Library { to examine advertising concerning the issue of immigration in Italy. A crucial topic in Italian politics, it has recently been a focus of several populist movements, some of which have adopted social media as a powerful tool for voter engagement. Indeed, we find evidence of targeting by the parties both in terms of geography and demographics (age and gender). For instance, Five Star Movement reaches a younger audience when advertising about immigration, while other parties' ads have a more male audience when advertising on this issue. We also notice a marked rise in advertising volume around elec- tions, as well as a shift to more general audience. Thus, we illustrate political advertising targeting that likely has an impact on public opin- ion on a topic involving potentially vulnerable populations, and urge the research community to include online advertising in the monitoring of public discourse.     Luiss School of Government Monthly Report on Italy November 2019 in collaboration with CISE Centro Italiano Studi Elettorali Monthly Report on Italy Italian politics has always been an arcane subject. A handful of specialists and enthusiasts love to talk of its Machiavellian intricacies for hours on end, but most people, especially north of the Alps, not only do not understand it, but see no reason why they should bother to understand it. Today there are at least three reasons why they should. First, in Italy the crisis of the political establishment that is now evident in many advanced democracies began a quarter century ago. This means that the country is further down the road of the democratic malaise – it is a laboratory and a bellwether. Second, Italy is the first country from within the historical core of the European community to be governed by anti-establishment parties. Third, its politics represent the greatest threat to the stability, or possibly even the existence, of the common European currency. Founded in 2010 in a University that has a very strong international vocation, the Luiss School of Government aims to facilitate the connection between Italy and the world outside of it. It aims to prepare the future Italian public elite for the complexities of an ever more integrated planet, and to provide first-class education to non-Italian students in Italy’s capital city. SoG professors have often helped non-Italian journalists and newspaper readers understand Italian politics. Thus, it seems only natural to me that, in light of the recent European elections, the Luiss SoG should offer a monthly report on Italy that provides an interpretation of the country’s recent political events, and makes an educated guess about what happens next.
