Lynn has devoted his professional life to the insurance industry and for 25 years has headed the Lynn Insurance Group which now has its corporate headquarters in Boca Raton. He shares his con siderable leadership talents with the Boca Raton Community Hospital as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Through the Lynn Foundation and through business and personal contributions, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn have supported many worthwhile civic, educational and charitable institutions. These endeavors have earned for him two other honorary doctoral degrees from Florida colleges and the "Champion of Higher Education in Florida" award from the presidents of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida. At Florida Atlantic University, grants and gifts from the Lynns have helped to establish the new baccalaureate nursing program and enabled our College of Business and Public Administration to expand its curricu lum and faculty and to bring noted experts to the campus for lecture en gagements. These events have not only added to the professional enrich ment of the faculty and students, but have allowed the University to share with the community, who are invited to attend, current trends in contem porary business issues. To cap their long history of support for higher education, a recent bountiful gift from Mr. and Mrs. Lynn will enable FAU to establish an Eminent Scholars Endowed Chair in the College of Business and Public Administration. In acknowledgement of his recognized leadership in a major industry, as well as his liberal support of higher education, Florida Atlantic Univer sity is pleased to confer on Eugene M. Lynn the honorary degree of Doctor of Commerce. 3 Presentation of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Commerce to Charles E. Schmidt Reading of the Citation Dr. Voss Conferring the Degree President Creech Assisting Dr. Michels and Dr. Kirby CHARLES E. SCHMIDT, Manufacturer, Banker and Philanthropist Charles E. Schmidt, a native of Illinois and a graduate of the Univer sity of Chicago, established permanent residency in Boca Raton in 1964 and currently serves as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Gulf stream Banks. His long and successful business career started in 1938 with the establishment of Tractor Supply Company ~hich he guided into a large corporation that was sold to a major conglomerate in 1969. During the intervening years Mr. Schmidt gained a wide reputation for fostering innovative business strategies and also devoted a considerable share of his assets to charitable purposes. Because of his deep interest in quality education and his strong sup port of both the Boca Raton Community Hospital and Florida Atlantic University, Mr. Schmidt personally assumed responsibility for raising a substantial sum of money from a group of private citizens to provide funding for FAU's new baccalaureate program in nursing, to bridge the gap between state funding and the actual needs of the program. More recently, the Schmidts' commitment to quality education for the area they now call home was demonstrated by a munificent gift that will establish and support two Eminent Scholars Endowed Chairs at Florida Atlantic University. The first chair will be in the College of Engi neering, which will allow the University to attract a nationally known scholarship and research figure to this discipline that serves the growing number of desirable industries moving into the community. For his achievements in industry and finance and for his commitment to quality education for the present and future student population, Florida Atlantic University takes pleasure in conferring on Charles E. Schmidt the honorary degree of Doctor of Commerce. Presentation of the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters to Margaret Gaines Swann Reading the Citation Dr. Voss Conferring the Degree President Creech Assisting Dr. Michels and Dr. Kirby MARGARET GAINES SWANN, Civic Leader and Patron of the Arts Margaret Gaines Swann, widow of Winter Haven citrus grower Tom B. Swann and mother of the late fantasy writer and FAU faculty member Thomas Burnett Swann, has devoted her long and productive civic life to the promotion of human welfare through the arts and sciences. Her personal achievements include primary responsibility for the expansion and development of a public library, of a cancer hospice center, of a community hospital, and the war time administration of Red Cross services. Most recently, through contributions to the Florida Atlantic Univer- 4 sity Foundation, Mrs. Swann established and continues to support the Thomas Burnett Swann Fund. Through this agency she has been the in spiration, both materially and intellectually, for the International Confer ence on the Fantastic in the Arts, one of the most attractive and success ful programs that the College of Humanities and the University offer. The fund has become an important force in promoting the arts, both academi cally and creatively. Through the annual volume of scholarly papers and the attendance of more than a thousand persons, including representatives from other nations, the Conference that is supported by Mrs. Swann has greatly enhanced the reputation of contemporary artists and scholars and of the University which offers the program.
