  • MCC Toronto's Reopening Plans
MCC Toronto’s Reopening Plans We at MCC Toronto hope that this message finds you well and that you have been enjoying the summer sun! As Ontario continues to progress on its re-opening plans, we want to update you on when we at MCC Toronto will resume In Person Worship Services. While many are excited to resume in-person Worship Services, others might be more reluctant and prefer to continue online. We want to accommodate both and so we expect online Worships Services will continue in one form or another. Furthermore, as many well know, our sanctuary is sweltering in the summer and so a decision was made some weeks ago to aim for a September resumption of in-person Worship Services. While some smaller congregations in the city have resumed in-person Services, like a mighty ship, MCC Toronto requires “all hands on deck” to pivot and that’s where you come in! We need you to volunteer, to get engaged, and to stay committed to MCC Toronto! Here’s what to watch for: Monday, August 9: We will be sending out a special congregation survey e-mail blast. Please take the 10-15 minutes to fill the survey out diligently. Your responses will help us decide our shared future and determine our direction. Sunday, September 12: MCC Toronto will host a very special Open House for new congregants who’ve discovered us online over the last 18 months and a Volunteer Training Session for communion servers and greeters. Sunday September 19th: We will have our first In-Person Worship Service in almost a year at our historic building 115 Simpson Avenue for MCC Toronto’s Homecoming Celebration!!! We are still working through the development of clear new protocols to keep you and our communities safe.

  • Stunning Vocals Lift Starlight's 'The Bodyguard'
Stunning vocals lift Starlight’s ‘The Bodyguard’ Starlight Theatre & By Bob Evans No musical succeeds without a spectacular musical score and the premium voices to deliver it to the audiences’ satisfaction, and the two lead female vocalists in the National Tour of “The Bodyguard” definitely deliver on the Whitney Houston cornucopia of Top 40 hits that serve as the framework for a weak story but entertaining evening. Under the stars at Starlight Theatre this week only, the Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner adapted live stage musical, “The Bodyguard” opened Tuesday, Aug. 8 on a beautiful evening to a sparse crowd of enthusiasts hoping to enjoy an evening of Houston’s hits. Starlight Theatre & Stellar vocal performances came from the two leading ladies, Deborah Cox & Jasmin Richardson. Both possessed the crystal clear voices so similar to Whitney Houston. Both unleashed the passion and love in her touching ballads and when singing as a duo, the result was absolutely amazing. The ladies were the only vocal strength of the show, but c’mon, it’s all about Houston’s majestic voice and the story serves as a way to encompass her hits. Starlight Theatre & If a male sang in the show, it’s completely forgettable. And the dancing was not-showstopping as would be expected in a national tour. Several times the dance ensemble was not in step but spotlights, flash and dash cover mistakes. While to most the production numbers looked good, to this reviewer, they looked tired and not in sync. Overall, the dancing looked like a dress rehearsal and not sharp, show quality.

She is a singer’s singer who has influenced countless other vocalists female and male. Music historians cite Whitney’s record-setting achievements: the only artist to chart seven consecutive #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (“Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know,” “Greatest Love Of All,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional,” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”); the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at #1 (her second album, Whitney, 1987); and the only artist with eight consecutive multi-platinum albums (Whitney Houston, Whitney, I’m Your Baby Tonight, The Bodyguard, Waiting To Exhale , and The Preacher’s Wife soundtracks; My Love Is Your Love and Whitney: The Greatest Hits). In fact, The Bodyguard soundtrack is one of the top 5 biggest-selling albums of all-time (at 18x-platinum in the U.S. alone), and Whitney’s career-defining version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist (at 8x-platinum for physical and digital in the U.S. alone). Born into a musical family on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, Whitney’s success might’ve been foretold.
