Christian Servant Magazine - Edition IV, 2016 - Page 5 GRACE FROM GOD GUS STYLE by Mike Merritt http://merrittcowboyministries.com/ If you don’t really know how much GOD loves you , then you will never be able to get all that HE has for you. One of the first things we need to be able to accept is that we don’t really deserve no better than what we have and we can’t do anything to ourselves to make things better. We just need to know and believe that GOD loved HIS creation so much that HE gave HIS SON so HIS people could be saved. Even though we live in a corrupt world and more times than not we are a rougey people. I think about one of the all time favorite cowboy movies and see what GOD did for us. If have seen the movie Lonesome Dove, maybe you remember Lori darlin’ and the time Jake Spoon left her alone at the camp. He was off gamblin’ and drankin’ while she was alone. Lori was kidnapped by Blue Duck and taken to the camp full of outlaws and renegades where they just had their way with her, treated like an animal. This is the part that makes it a little more clearer to me as to what GOD has done for me and will do for you. Gus had taken a likin’ to Lori darlin’ and knew she was in trouble. She had no way to get herself out of this mess, even though she was not really responsible for her fate totally. Just like us, we sometimes make decisions based on what we want to do (Lori wanted to go to San Francisco and had no idea of the dangers involved) we are so focused on what we want that we don’t look at all of the things that might go wrong. Anyway like GOD did for us, Gus was the one to rescue Lori from her mess. Gus tracked down Blue Duck and the outlaws and prepared to make it right. You remember Jeremiah Johnson, he had lost his son to these outlaws and he wanted revenge. As Gus and Jeremiah blazed down that hill, the world didn’t know what was about to happen. Gus pulled his pistols, whoopin’ and a ridin’, taking out all them outlaws. When the dust settled, Jeremiah said you killed’em all, I never fired a shot. Gus took Lori darlin’ to a safe place, comforted her, restored her and helped her find her way. GOD don’t need help, we just need to fess up the truth; getting’ out of these messes we have made is more than we can handle. HE will rescue you from the bad guys, strengthen you and help you find your way. GRACE, we don’t deserve it, but we can receive it. Well if you saw the movie, quite a few mornings Gus was sitting by the fire cooking biscuits and reading the good book. You have to think he read about the disciples asking Jesus “who then could be saved” and Jesus said “with men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God, all things are possible. (Mark 10:27) Don’t really matter what kinda of storm we are dealing with, God will get us right through it. This ole world ain’t our home, we are just here for a little while. Douglas Livermore, KY - 24/7 Christian Servant Magazine - Edition IV, 2016 - Page 7 For you are dust, And to dust you shall return. by Marty Smith I read a verse that puts everything into perspective. It’s from Genesis 3:19. It says, “By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return." When I read this verse I had to read it again. “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” In the entertainment industry, it’s easy to let things go to our heads. We look at what we’ve done and we swell up with pride saying, “Look at all the things I’ve done”, not realizing that in the grand scheme of things, we are just a vapor in the wind when it comes to time. We are nothing without Jesus. When I look back on my radio career, I’m amazed at how God has blessed me. Everything that I have, everything that I am is because of Him. I’m nothing without Him. Then, when I look at this verse, I realize I am nothing but dust, and to dust I will return. One hundred years from now, will anyone remember me? I doubt it. But, if I set my mind on things above and store up my treasures in Heaven, that is what’s important. That is what will last for eternity. We can brag on all the awards we’ve won, we can build ourselves up and say, “No one’s ever done what I’ve done”, or “Without me, this industry is nothing.” That’s the wrong attitude to have. We need to be giving praise to God for what He’s given us. The awards, the music career, the studio or radio station, the recognition, the talent that we have….all of that is because of Him. I’d like to challenge you with this thought; from this moment on, let’s commit to putting God first instead of ourselves.

  • “Amarillo by Morning” the Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1
In the early months of 1964, on their inaugural tour of North America, the Beatles seemed to be everywhere: appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, making the front cover of Newsweek, and playing for fanatical crowds at sold out concerts in Washington, D.C. and New York City. On Billboard magazine’s April 4, 1964, Hot 100 2 list, the “Fab Four” held the top five positions. 28 One notch down at Number 6 was “Suspicion,” 29 by a virtually unknown singer from Amarillo, Texas, named Terry Stafford. The following week “Suspicion” – a song that sounded suspiciously like Elvis Presley using an alias – moved up to Number 3, wedged in between the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” and “She Loves You.”3 The saga of how a Texas boy met the British Invasion head-on, achieving almost overnight success and a Top-10 hit, is one of triumph and “Amarillo By Morning” disappointment, a reminder of the vagaries The Life and Songs of Terry Stafford 1 that are a fact of life when pursuing a career in Joe W. Specht music. It is also the story of Stafford’s continuing development as a gifted songwriter, a fact too often overlooked when assessing his career. Terry Stafford publicity photo circa 1964. • Porter Wagoners Tent
Nov. 15, 1992---- The Grand Ole Opry is the country's longest-running live music and variety radio program. It's fitting that one of country music's longest-running live wires will represent the Opry when it is inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame on Sunday at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago. Country singer Porter Wagoner will make a rare stop in Chicago to accept the honors from special guests the Oak Ridge Boys, along with new inductees Don Ameche, "Top 40 Countdown" poobah Casey Kasem, Detroit morning personality J.P. McCarthy and ABC broadcast legend Leonard Goldenson. The program will be broadcast live on WGN-AM and be beamed back to Nashville on WSM-AM, where the Grand Ole Opry was born on Nov. 28, 1925, as "The WSM Barn Dance." Wagoner is from a different era of country music. He first appeared at the Opry in 1957, when he sang his hit "Satisfied Mind" at the old Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. Country music was characterized by a spunky self-reliance, found in the topical breadth of its songs as well as the colorful showmanship of its singers. Few were as colorful as Porter Wagoner: He was one of the first country artists to exploit the broadcast industry. As early as 1951, he appeared on radio with "The Ozark Jubilee," broadcast from KWTO-AM in Springfield, Mo. While at KWTO, Wagoner met Radio Hall of Famer Paul Harvey, who will host Sunday's ceremony. And from 1960 to 1980, Wagoner reached a television audience of up to 45 million with his syndicated "Porter Wagoner Show." One of Wagoner's key sponsors was the Chattanooga Medicine Co., a pharmaceutical outfit that sold Soltice heat rubs, hygenic supplies and Black Draught laxative, promoted as "the fastest-moving product in the South." The permanently pompadoured Wagoner introduced the rhinestone Nudie suit.

  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.
