G Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes und If You Got Anything Good werden häufig als zwei der besten Country-Duette aller Zeiten bezeichnet. -

With all the talk of outlaws in the 1970s, Coe was the only true outlaw of the lot, having spent his youth and early 20s in various jails. Now our series is winding up. His records weren't charting as before, but the quality never lets up. UNCHAINED/SON OF THE SOUTH not only includes some of David Allan's best songs, but also incredible duets with Waylon Jennings and his wife, Jessi Colter, as well as Willie Nelson, and Waylon and Willie together. In addition, there's even a duet with the Allman Brothers' guitarist, Dickey Betts. -

INFORMATION “We’ll have western films as long as the cameras keep turning“ said John Wayne – and the Duke personally presents Dean Mar- tin and Ricky Nelson singing My Rifle, My Pony And Me from ‘Rio Bravo.’ There is a long tradition of movie themes sung by con- temporary Pop or Country singers: Frankie Laine and Roy Rogers, Marty Robbins, Eddy Arnold and Willie Nelson – they all interpreted the themes from Western movies and TV series. And actors such as Clint Eastwood or Kirk Douglas also made some (more or less convincing) attempts as singers. Here BEAR FAMILY presents – for the first time on vinyl since decades – an exceptional collectors item: the theme tunes from three Western classics (‘Rio Bravo,’ ‘Paint Your Wagon’ and ‘Bonanza’) plus Gene Pitney’s ballad about The Man Who Shot Liberty Va- lance, inspired by the movie of the same name featuring James Stewart. -

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

This record really rocks – 22 tracks recorded by an important but little-reissued Oklahoma-born singer from the classic era of rock'n'roll! G Also another 10 vocal and instrumental tracks not originally issued – and with Big Al Downing on piano! If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style. -
Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -
ROCK'n'roll's 1ST DECADE Week Three
ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week Three: Rock in the Mid-1950s Recommended Listening: Chuck Berry, The Anthology (Chess, 2000). Two-CD, 50-song compilation of his most essential tracks from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, including hits and his most influential non- hits. These include some of the most familiar and most-covered songs in all of rock, important both for the quality of the songwriting and the many classic riffs in tunes like "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," "Sweet Little Sixteen," and "Reelin' & Rockin'." The single-disc collection The Great Twenty-Eight contains most of his most well known songs. Johnny Cash, The Sun Years (Rhino, 1990). Cash is usually considered a country artist, not a rock one. There's no denying, however, that much of his mid-1950s material for Sun had a rockabilly and pop-rock flavor. This has his most popular recordings for the label, including the hits "I Walk the Line," "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," and "Folsom Prison Blues." Fats Domino, Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits the Way You Originally Heard Them (Capitol, 2002). Fats Domino had more than 20 hits, but this has the most famous ones by the greatest exponent of New Orleans rock'n'roll, including "The Fat Man," "Ain't That a Shame," and "Blueberry Hill." Wanda Jackson, Queen of Rockabilly (Ace, 2000). Commonly and rightfully referred to as the best woman rock artist of the 1950s, Jackson was more than that. She was one of the best rockabilly singers, period.
