INFORMATION Around the world, Canadian singer Bob King is mainly known by rockabilly fans for two tracks he cut for RCA Canada in 1958, Rockin' The Juke Box and Party Hop. But in his native Canada, King is remembered as a staunch advocate for traditional coun- try. In a career that stretched from the early fifties until his untimely death in 1989 at the age 55, King found success as the lead singer of the The Happy Wanderers, as a solo performer, and as a duet act with his French-Canadian wife, Marie. His recording career began with ten classic singles cut for RCA Canada between 1955 and 1958. Included are the original versions of Laurel Lee and Let's Make A Fair Trade,two songs he re-recorded and made into crowd favorites throughout his career. Also included are several forgotten honky tonk classics like Daydreamer's Blues, Train's Late Tonight, and Hey Mam, along with his cover of the Charlie Feathers classic Defrost Your Heart, which was cut only weeks after Feathers' original was released on SUN RECORDS. This disc features 21 tracks: all of King's recordings for RCA Canada and a bonus alternate take of You're A Strange Little Girl, along with detailed liner notes and photos.   • Lefty Frizzell
    Lefty Frizzell William Orville “Lefty” Frizzell was born on March 31, 1928 in Corsicana, Texas, but moved with his family shortly after his birth to El Dorado, Arkansas, where Frizzell began playing the guitar as a very young boy. In the late 1930s Lefty had a featured spot on a children’s radio program broadcast from KELD. In his teens he worked country fairs, dances, bars, and clubs throughout North Texas. The family moved back to Texas when Frizzell was still a teenager, and his music career got a boost when he won a Dallas talent contest. In his late teens, he was performing at fairgrounds and other venues, developing his unique, soulful voice, and soon his growing popularity as a singer afforded him regular work on the ”Honky-Tonk” nightclub circuit. At age 19 he had a half-hour show on a small Texas radio station, and in 1950, at age twenty two, he signed to Columbia Records, and was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. The following year he appeared on the Louisiana Hayride and began touring with country music’s biggest star of the era, Hank Williams. A prolific songwriter, Frizzell had four songs in the country top ten at the same time in 1951 — a feat that would not be repeated on any chart until The Beatles accomplished it on the popular chart in 1964. In 1953 he moved to Los Angeles and became a regular on Town Hall Party, a radio and TV show featuring all the top country artists of the era.

The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.
