Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Farne, Bärlappe, Moosfarne, Schachtelhalme, Brachsenkräuter und Urfarne in verschiedenen Kulturen beschrieben. Die gegenüber Samenpflanzen artenarme Gruppe spielt weltweit als Nährpflanzen für Menschen eine kleine Rolle, doch sind die Gefässkryptogamen als Heilpflanzen recht bedeutungsvoll. Durch ihren lange Zeit unverstandenen Fortpflanzungsmechanismus ohne Blüten, Samen und Früchte wurde den Farnen und ihren Verwandten in früheren Zeiten eine gewisse Magie zugeschrieben. Diese Zauberhaftigkeit verschwand in Europa mit dem Fortschreiten der Naturwissenschaften seit der Aufklärung, in anderen Regionen der Welt konnte sie sich im Bewusstsein der Menschen bis heute bewahren. -

Mature individuals and seedling patches of Weinmannia tinctoria, and also tree-ferns, were mapped on two 1-ha rain-forest plots. Weinmannia tinctoria has hemi-epiphytic behaviour since seedlings were generally located on plant supports (99.6%). Regeneration was better on a support than on the ground, and germination tests showed that seeds were light-stimulated. Tall tree-ferns (Cyathea spp.) were suitable supports. Cyathea glauca and C. excelsa were more suitable supports than C. borbonica. Weinmannia tinctoria establishment complies with the facilitation model of succession and is dependent on tree-ferns. LA RÉUNION, INDIAN OCEAN – 20-29 October Introduction Pat Acock Whilst in Austria with the GEP (Group of European Pteridologists), Caroline Van den Heede showed me some of her pictures of La Réunion, taken whilst tracking down Asplenium cordatum for her research. I discussed the possibility of a BPS meeting with both Rémy Prelli and Michel Boudrie, both of whom had visited the island, and they sent Paul Ripley and I annotated maps and personal notes from their excursions. I bought all the detailed maps of the island and early in 2005 Paul and I booked our flights and hotel for a reconnaissance. We arrived on the island and marvelled at the luxuriance of the ferns but were overwhelmed by the numbers and were hard pushed to name even a handful. Michel had given us the name of a contact on the island, Edmond Grangaud. After two days Edmond found us and rescued us from our ignorance. We spent the next three days in the field with our most excellent and patient tutor and in the evenings we pored over books whilst being looked after by Edmond’s wife Marie-Françoise, who so generously took us into her home and fed and watered us. Our worries as to whether or not Edmond would be available to help us the next year were dispelled when we arrived four days early to finalise the tour and were met by Edmond. He had worked out the whole programme and would spend the entire time with us. La Réunion is situated in the Indian Ocean about 500 miles east of Madagascar at latitude 21°S and longitude 55°E. -

Indeed, even if variety of numerous microhabitats is a possible hypothesis, results remain inconclusive. In this study natural species regeneration on the soil was compared to that on tree fern stipes, a particular microhabitat type which is a safe place for the regeneration and maintain of fl owering epiphytic plant species. Species that regenerate only underground or exclusively on tree fern stipes, or for some in these two microhabitat types, have been studied in this paper. The presence of numerous hemi-epiphytic indigenous species is highlighted and the specifi c regeneration on Cyathea spp. stipes is explained by specifi c life history traits (such as small seeds, seedling photo-sensibility, heliophilous saplings and anemochorous dissemination), which in particular give them the capability to hook on tree fern stipes and settle there. This “above ground” mode of growth should enhance the survival of heliophilous species particularly in invaded places by exotics plants. Tree ferns appear as playing an important role in the regeneration of a number of fl owering plants in Réunion tropical forests.
