Welcome to the world of barbershop harmony! Do you like to sing? Do you enjoy singing in the shower or jamming to your favorite runes in the car? Do you carry a song in your soul and a spring in your step? If so, then we are especially glad you have found Westosha Lakes Chorus. We are an all-female acapella singing group that practices and performs traditional, patriotic, holiday, and contemporary four-part harmony in the barbershop style. What does our chorus do? Westosha Lakes Chorus meets for rehearsals every Thursday evening (from 6:45 pm to 9:30 pm) in Antioch, Illinois (on the Illinois/Wisconsin border). We welcome guests to all of our regular rehearsals, as well as our special guest nights (held throughout the year). Additionally, we perform for a wide variety of special audiences and occasions in both private and public venues. We sing for charity kickoffs, community gatherings, corporate events, festivals and fairs, holiday parties, senior center gatherings, weddings, and more. One of our favorite things to do is to attend local sporting events and sing the American National Anthem. Each spring, the chorus participates in a large musical competition with other Sweet Adelines choruses in our region of the Midwestern United States. “The only thing better than singing is more singing.” - Ella Fitzgerald What is barbershop music? Barbershop is an acapella style of harmony music made up of four parts: Tenor, Lead, Baritone, and Bass. Generally, the Lead sings the melody line in a piece of music, while the other three parts sing harmony. Who are we? Westosha Lakes Chorus is a dynamic group of energetic women united by the joy of singing four- part barbershop harmony, the quest of performing with musical excellence, and the friendships that naturally develop. Our chorus welcomes women from all walks of life (teens to seniors), who love singing. Our members attend school, work full- or part-time, are self- employed, volunteer in various pursuits, or are retired. Many have had music instruction or experience in high school or college, church choirs, or other community music groups. Some are long-time Sweet Adelines, while others are new to the organization. Chorus members come from both Illinois and Wisconsin to sing together. How did Westosha Lakes Chorus begin? In 2001, five barbershop-experienced women hosted their first guest night. Seventeen guests attended that evening, and Westosha Lakes Chorus was born! The following year, we became an officially chartered chorus of Sweet Adelines International and went to our first regional competition with 27 members. About our director Nancie Kiddoo is a professional music instructor specializing in acapella, flute, piano and other areas. She holds a teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. Nancie joined the chorus in 2001 and became director in 2011. She has also performed with a Sweet Adelines Quartet and has served in regional leadership with Sweet Adelines International. In January 2014, she completed the Sweet Adelines International Director Certification Program, achieving the level of Certified Director. She has made it a personal goal to make Westosha Lakes Chorus an excellent performing group and welcomes any women who enjoy singing to visit a rehearsal and explore the world of barbershop chords We are a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization founded in 1945.
