Say Hello to Bye Bye Birde! Contra Costa Musical Theatre Opens 54Th Season with a Classic Say Hello To Bye Bye Birde! Contra Costa Musical Theatre Opens 54th Season with a Classic WALNUT CREEK, September 15, 2014 — Contra Costa Musical Theatre (CCMT) will present the musical “Bye Bye Birde” at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, October 17 through November 15th, 2014. Tickets for “Bye Bye Birde” range from $45 to $54 (with discounts available for seniors, youth, and groups) and are on sale now at the Lesher Center for the Arts Ticket Office, 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek, 925.943.SHOW (943-7469). Tickets can also be purchased online at www.lesherArtscenter.org. Inspired by Elvis Presley and the stir his draft notice caused in 1957, this satirical look at Americana has music by Charles Strouse (Annie; Applause), lyrics by Lee Adams (Applause), and book by Michael Stewart (Hello Dolly, Carnival). The show was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning four, including Best Musical. It also marked the first Broadway show for the legendary Dick Van Dyke in the lead role, which also led to his first film, reprising his Tony-winning performance. Set in 1958, rock-n-roll heart throb Conrad Birdie has been drafted into the army, leaving his songwriter and agent Albert in a jam. But Albert’s secretary and sweetheart Rosie comes up with a plan: Conrad will perform a new hit, “One Last Kiss”, on the Ed Sullivan Show before he ships off to basic training. One member of Birdie’s fan club is chosen to receive a real ‘last kiss’ live on TV. But the lucky girl, Kim McAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio, isn’t sure she wants to go through with it, throwing the publicity machine – and Albert’s job security and future with Rosie – into jeopardy. Featuring such classic songs as “Put on a Happy Face”, “A Lot of Livin’ To Do”, “Baby Talk To Me” and “Spanish Rose”, this musical treat – suitable for the whole family - features an award-winning score and exciting dance numbers. This will be the first production of ‘Birdie to be presented at the Lesher Center, and will feature a cast of fresh new talent joining past audience favorites. Reuniting for this special production are Robert Lopez as Albert Peterson and Nicole Helfer as Rosie Alvarez, who appeared opposite each other as screenwriting partners Joe Gillis and Betty Schaefer in CCMT’s Sunset Boulevard. Mr. Lopez is appearing in his fourth CCMT production; recent roles include Marius in Les Miserables, Joe in Sunset Boulevard, and Roger in RENT. Ms. Helfer returns for her sixth CCMT production. In addition to her appearances onstage as Fantine in Les Miserables, Betty in Sunset Boulevard, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and Val in A Chorus Line, Ms. Helfer was also recently nominated for a Shellie Award for her choreography of CCMT’s Tarzan. Newcomers Olivia Hytha and Mackenszie Drae star as Kim MacAfee and Conrad Birdie, and a host of faces familiar and new will fill the stage with song and dance in various ensemble roles. We Love This Staff, Oh Yes We Do CCMT is excited to welcome Director/Choreographer Christina Lazo to the fold. While making her CCMT debut, Ms. Lazo is no stranger to the stage, as she has successfully served as director and choreographer for award winning productions across the Bay Area. Returning for his third assignment as Musical Director is Matt Smart, who previously served in this role for CCMT’s RENT and last season’s Tarzan. CCMT resident Scenic Designer is the award-winning Kelly J Tighe, who will handle the sets. Making their CCMT debuts are Costumer Hope Bidwell and Lighting Designer Joe D’Emilio. This dynamic team is led by Production Manager Shannon Strain Demers. 50 Years of ‘Birde For more than fifty years, Bye Bye Birde has been entertaining audiences young and old. The successful Broadway production led to the film Bye Bye Birde released in 1963 with Dick Van Dyke, Janet Leigh, Maureen Stapleton, Bobby Rydell and a young Ann-Margret as Kim MacAfee. Several productions have appeared over the past fifty years, most recently a 2009 Broadway revival with John Stamos and Gina Gershon in the lead roles. A successful TV movie was presented in 1995 starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams. About Contra Costa Musical Theatre Based in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa Musical Theatre has a fifty year history of producing dynamic musical productions and providing a home to local and national talent. CCMT has won more Shellie Awards for musicals than any other regional company, Since their move to the Lesher Center for the Arts in 1990, they have produced more than 40 full-scale productions, including the East Bay premieres of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Urinetown, the Musical, The Full Monty, RENT, Titanic, the Musical, Hairspray, Sunset Boulevard, Tarzan and Les Miserables. • Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway
Arts & Humanities High Art, High Ideals: Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway The Tony Award-winning director of Hadestown may be theater’s most forward- thinking artist. By Stuart Miller '90JRN | Fall 2019 Zack DeZon / Getty Images Making her way to the stage of Radio City Music Hall to accept the 2019 Tony Award for best direction of a musical, Rachel Chavkin ’08SOA was thinking about time. She had all of ninety seconds to get to the microphone and deliver her speech, which was written on a much-creased piece of paper folded in her hands. Seven months pregnant, Chavkin, thirty-eight, was not about to sprint. As she told Columbia Magazine days later, “I warned my husband: if they call my name, I won’t have time to hug you!” Hadestown, an enthralling, profoundly moving retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, would, by night’s end, capture eight awards, including best original score and best musical. The accolades were not only hard won — Chavkin, a leading light of experimental theater, and Anaïs Mitchell, a singer-songwriter from Vermont, shaped and refined Hadestown for seven years — but also, some might say, overdue. In seventy-three years of the Tony Awards (named after Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, and theater advocate), Chavkin became just the fourth woman to win for best direction of a musical, joining Julie Taymor (The Lion King), Susan Stroman (The Producers), and Diane Paulus ’97SOA (Pippin). And in 2019, out of twelve new musicals on Broadway, Hadestown was the only one directed by a woman. The show, playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street, is set mostly in a New Orleans–style barrelhouse at a time of economic and environmental decay.

Harmony at Harmonia? Glamor and farce in Hello, Dolly!, from Wilder to Kelly Julie Vatain-Corfdir & Émilie Rault When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January 1964, immediately to be hailed as “a musical shot through with enchantment,”1 New York audiences were by no means greeting Dolly for the first time. Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane.

  • THE PRODUCERS Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
THE PRODUCERS Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks Garland Summer Musicals Production Crew: Producer – Patty Granville Reviewed Performance 6/16/2017 Reviewed by Joel Gerard, Associate Critic for John Garcia's THE COLUMN If you’ve ever seen a Mel Brooks movie, then you should know what to expect from anything he writes. The Producers has raunchy humor with slightly offensive jokes about every race, sex, and religion. But above all else it’s also hilarious and fun. It won a record twelve Tony awards on Broadway, and Garland Summer Musicals is doing an award-worthy production right here in North Texas. The Producers is a musical Mel Brooks wrote based on his own movie “The Producers” from 1967 which starred the late Gene Wilder. Max Bialystock used to be the king of Broadway, but most of his shows are now flops that close as soon as they open. Max gets a visit from his accountant Leo Bloom who discovers that Max could potentially make more money from producing show that flops if he raises more money than he needs to produce the show. To ensure the show closes quickly, they collaborate to find an awful musical called “Springtime For Hitler”, hire a terrible director, and wait to pocket the money once the show fails. Of course things don’t go exactly as planned after opening night. Randy Pearlman plays Max Bialystock the down-on-his-luck Broadway producer looking to make some money. This is a fun role for any actor. Max is a zany character with questionable morals.

We’re so glad you could join us! Musical theater is a unique American creation. It’s also a joyful mixture of song and story, and, since 1945, Dallas Summer Musicals has brought the finest musicals to Dallas. Want to know what goes into making a musical? Just two simple ingredients: singing and acting (song and story). There’s just something about a song that makes a story mean more than just regular speech. It touches us in a different way. Whether a show uses classical music or rock, a musical uses music to tell its story, to suggest feelings, emotions, and attitudes. As long as it mixes song and story, musical theater can be about literally anything, and this season’s shows are great examples of the wide range of subjects. From the blockbuster musical Wicked to the sweeping epic of Camelot, each production reveals a different aspect of what makes musical theater so special. The story of Dallas Summer Musicals is a long and honored one, and by learning about and attending one of our shows, you are now part of that story too! Sincerely, Michael A.
