  • Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway
Arts & Humanities High Art, High Ideals: Rachel Chavkin Takes on Broadway The Tony Award-winning director of Hadestown may be theater’s most forward- thinking artist. By Stuart Miller '90JRN | Fall 2019 Zack DeZon / Getty Images Making her way to the stage of Radio City Music Hall to accept the 2019 Tony Award for best direction of a musical, Rachel Chavkin ’08SOA was thinking about time. She had all of ninety seconds to get to the microphone and deliver her speech, which was written on a much-creased piece of paper folded in her hands. Seven months pregnant, Chavkin, thirty-eight, was not about to sprint. As she told Columbia Magazine days later, “I warned my husband: if they call my name, I won’t have time to hug you!” Hadestown, an enthralling, profoundly moving retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, would, by night’s end, capture eight awards, including best original score and best musical. The accolades were not only hard won — Chavkin, a leading light of experimental theater, and Anaïs Mitchell, a singer-songwriter from Vermont, shaped and refined Hadestown for seven years — but also, some might say, overdue. In seventy-three years of the Tony Awards (named after Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, and theater advocate), Chavkin became just the fourth woman to win for best direction of a musical, joining Julie Taymor (The Lion King), Susan Stroman (The Producers), and Diane Paulus ’97SOA (Pippin). And in 2019, out of twelve new musicals on Broadway, Hadestown was the only one directed by a woman. The show, playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street, is set mostly in a New Orleans–style barrelhouse at a time of economic and environmental decay.

Harmony at Harmonia? Glamor and farce in Hello, Dolly!, from Wilder to Kelly Julie Vatain-Corfdir & Émilie Rault When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January 1964, immediately to be hailed as “a musical shot through with enchantment,”1 New York audiences were by no means greeting Dolly for the first time. Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane.

  • THE PRODUCERS Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
THE PRODUCERS Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks Garland Summer Musicals Production Crew: Producer – Patty Granville Reviewed Performance 6/16/2017 Reviewed by Joel Gerard, Associate Critic for John Garcia's THE COLUMN If you’ve ever seen a Mel Brooks movie, then you should know what to expect from anything he writes. The Producers has raunchy humor with slightly offensive jokes about every race, sex, and religion. But above all else it’s also hilarious and fun. It won a record twelve Tony awards on Broadway, and Garland Summer Musicals is doing an award-worthy production right here in North Texas. The Producers is a musical Mel Brooks wrote based on his own movie “The Producers” from 1967 which starred the late Gene Wilder. Max Bialystock used to be the king of Broadway, but most of his shows are now flops that close as soon as they open. Max gets a visit from his accountant Leo Bloom who discovers that Max could potentially make more money from producing show that flops if he raises more money than he needs to produce the show. To ensure the show closes quickly, they collaborate to find an awful musical called “Springtime For Hitler”, hire a terrible director, and wait to pocket the money once the show fails. Of course things don’t go exactly as planned after opening night. Randy Pearlman plays Max Bialystock the down-on-his-luck Broadway producer looking to make some money. This is a fun role for any actor. Max is a zany character with questionable morals.

We’re so glad you could join us! Musical theater is a unique American creation. It’s also a joyful mixture of song and story, and, since 1945, Dallas Summer Musicals has brought the finest musicals to Dallas. Want to know what goes into making a musical? Just two simple ingredients: singing and acting (song and story). There’s just something about a song that makes a story mean more than just regular speech. It touches us in a different way. Whether a show uses classical music or rock, a musical uses music to tell its story, to suggest feelings, emotions, and attitudes. As long as it mixes song and story, musical theater can be about literally anything, and this season’s shows are great examples of the wide range of subjects. From the blockbuster musical Wicked to the sweeping epic of Camelot, each production reveals a different aspect of what makes musical theater so special. The story of Dallas Summer Musicals is a long and honored one, and by learning about and attending one of our shows, you are now part of that story too! Sincerely, Michael A.

  • The Enneagram and Its Implications
First Ladies: Leading Their Way S. Irene Matz California State University, Fullerton Donald L. Stelluto University of Notre Dame Using Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Rodham Clinton as case studies, this paper explores the importance of historical context and personal communication styles in determining how well political messages and ideas have been transmitted by American first ladies and how well these activities have been received by the American public. Both Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Rodham Clinton were strong personalities and exercised various roles that were ancillary to their president husbands and served as extensions of their husbands’ presidential administrations. These two women, however, faced significant challenges and demonstrated quite marked differences in their success as first ladies. INTRODUCTION This paper will examine briefly the role of two first ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Rodham Clinton, in light of several significant questions about the evolving nature of the role of the first lady and the impact of individual personalities on that role’s cultural and political importance. These include: Did these women stand alone or were they appendages to their husbands? What was the importance of historical context and did crises, such as the Great Depression, relax more traditional and restrictive expectations in the public sphere? In the 1990s, did the changing roles of women lead to changes in the first ladies’ political messages? Was the public more welcoming to Hillary than decades before with Eleanor? What personal skills and capabilities did both first ladies possess that affected their roles and endeavors? This study will also prove to be the basis for an expanded work on first ladies in the twentieth century as communicators of political and constitutional ideas and concepts.

But Albert’s secretary and sweetheart Rosie comes up with a plan: Conrad will perform a new hit, “One Last Kiss”, on the Ed Sullivan Show before he ships off to basic training. One member of Birdie’s fan club is chosen to receive a real ‘last kiss’ live on TV. But the lucky girl, Kim McAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio, isn’t sure she wants to go through with it, throwing the publicity machine – and Albert’s job security and future with Rosie – into jeopardy.
