An Afternoon on Broadway Marks the Beginning of the Band’S 33Rd Season
Purpose and History The Community Band of Brevard exists to educate its members, to entertain its audiences, and to serve its community. Our musical director is Mr. Marion Scott. Mr. Scott formed the Band in 1985 to provide a performance outlet for adult musicians in the area. Our membership, currently numbering about 80, includes people of all ages representing many occupations. Most of our concerts have a specific theme upon which the music focuses. Those themes have often led us to include exceedingly difficult works, which we willingly do, and to include special guest artists. The Band gives several concerts throughout the year. Our concerts include many diverse musical genres, composers, and often previously unpublished works for band. Each program is planned to please a variety of musical tastes. If you would like more information about the Band, or wish to join, send us a message to [email protected] or contact David Scarborough at (321) 338-6210. Like us on Facebook at Community Band of Brevard and visit our Web site at http://www.CommunityBandOfBrevard.com. AS YOU LIKE IT, the First Production of Our 50Th Anniversary Season, and the First Show in Our Shakespearean Act
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past. -
And the World Goes 'Round Just After Finishing the New York Revival of Kander and Ebb's Flora, the Red Menace
AND THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND Music by John Kander: Lyrics by Fred Ebb: Conceived by Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and David Thompson Westside Theatre - Off-Broadway - March 18, 1991 (408 perfs) SYNOPSIS "Rehearsals had been under way for nearly a month. In another week, we'd be in the Westside Theatre on West 43rd Street. On this particular day, John and Fred were coming to the studio. Of course, their appearance wasn't at all unusual. They were one of us. Even so, every few days we sat them down and showed them our progress. We wanted to make sure our interpretation of the number matched their own interpretation. Composers and lyricists are notorious for wanting their songs sung in a very particular way. For some reason, they think they know how a song is intended to sound. We were slightly apprehensive because we had been tinkering with one of their best known songs, Cabaret. We had changed not only the melody but the words as well. Our intention, unlike our intention for most of the other songs in the show, was to find a new way to present the song: to make it different-fresh-and as exciting as it must have been the first time it was ever performed. Now it was time to see if we had succeeded. John and Fred arrived. The performers stood around the piano and sang David Loud's new arrangement. When they had finished, a few moments passed. Nothing. Maybe this time we had gone too far. Finally, Fred broke the silence and said with a broad smile, "Well, you made the old turkey gobble again." Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and I began working on And the World Goes 'Round just after finishing the New York revival of Kander and Ebb's Flora, the Red Menace. -
SEMESTER at SEA COURSE SYLLABUS Voyage: Summer 2014
SEMESTER AT SEA COURSE SYLLABUS Voyage: Summer 2014 Discipline: Drama DRAM 3040: Musical Theatre History Upper Division Faculty Name: Nancy Carr Pre-requisites: None. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Whether you love the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals like The Sound of Music, Stephen Schwartz’s sensation Wicked, the rock musicals American Idiot and Mamma Mia or the new movie musicals Rock of Ages and Les Misérables, this class will examine them all. Taught by a professional actress and professor who currently has a student on Broadway, this class will explore many of Broadway’s milestone musicals complimented by a collection of over 400 video clips, original Broadway cast albums, scores, librettos (scripts), audio clips and photographs. Students will immerse themselves in the world of the musical by studying some of the most influential composers, lyricists, directors, choreographers, and performers that have contributed to the historical development of this art form. By exploring the language of music, the art of drama and the beauty of dance, you will investigate what it takes to bring musicals from the page to the stage, and what makes them triumph or flop. Students will gain insight into what really happens at an audition for a musical, how the world of musical theatre functions and the effect television shows like Glee and Smash as well as the resurgent popularity of movie musicals are having on the future of both the Broadway musical and its audience. Also, we will examine composers from several of the countries visited during the voyage who have had an impact on the development of the musical theatre landscape including Andrew Lloyd Webber (England), Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus (Sweden) and Irving Berlin (Russia), as well as the work of American composers and librettists who have used the countries we are visiting as settings for their musicals. -
