i Message to Friends of the Foundation

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Directors we are pleased to present our 2015 annual report. The year 2015 proved to be challenging for the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, but in many ways we strove forward building bonds with the community we serve. We shared in the positive and in the difficult economic fortunes of the community. Despite a trying employment picture and an uncooperative economic market, our donor advised fund holders demonstrated their continued generosity, increasing the total value of their grants by over 28% from the previous year. Thankfully, that philanthropic trend is continuing into the new fiscal year. While the stresses in financial markets dented pocketbooks, the Foundation has reason to be optimistic about the future. Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) is a group of up to 25 area high school students from the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation service area. YEP grants $10,000 annually to local youth-focused efforts through the support of an anonymous donor. However, in 2015 YEP members also established an endowment designed to support the group for years to come. Their endowment drive exceeded all expectations. In June YEP received the Fundraiser of the Year Award at the Council of Michigan Foundations’ youth conference. The award was for the “most creative, unique, outstanding and impactful fund development activity.” The Women to Women Giving Circle had a banner year in terms of increased membership and grant-making. The community saw their leadership in bringing increased awareness of mental health issues and strategies to help meet challenges in this area. The Foundation increased by 34% its assistance through competitive grants to programs that address a wide range of community needs. The ability to assist worthy organizations was possible through donors to our Women to Women Giving Circle and Annual Campaign and the sustained support of the arts community from the Jerome Mirza Foundation. In addition, many of our endowments are providing significant and increasing dollars each year to add to the money available for our competitive grants. Each year we endeavor to reach out to more people to advocate for a culture of philanthropy. This year we opened twelve new funds with individuals and groups including two new scholarship funds, a further investment in our collective future. Our Celebrating Local Philanthropy nonprofit workshop drew record attendance. This benefit to the community would not be possible without an increasing cadre of volunteers. A community foundation is a reflection of the society it serves. We thank you for the opportunity to connect generous donors with causes that help us all be better together.

Susan Hoblit, President Greg Meyer, Executive Director

Over 130 representatives of nonprofit organizations attended the 2015 Celebrating Local Philanthropy Workshop, “Purposeful Collaboration: Navigating the Ups and Downs of Collaboration to Preserve Community Assets.” This timely topic was covered from four perspectives – defining the organization’s core mission, interpretations and expectations of collaboration, real world examples from local organizations in various phases of collaboration, and grantors’ considerations about collaboration when making funding decisions. Dozens of volunteers helped make the workshop a success.

Emerging Philanthropists

Emerging Philanthropists, a new initiative of Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, made its debut in 2015. Steve Timmermann, Aaron Hays, and Ryan O’Connell spearheaded formation of the group, with support from the Development Committee. IPCF wanted to create a vehicle for young adults, roughly between the ages of 20 and 30, to explore many facets of the nonprofit community and instill in them the habit of giving time, talent, and treasure to support important organizations. The Action Research Center at Illinois Wesleyan University, under the direction of Deborah Halperin, is a partner in this initiative. Each month the group visits a nonprofit that has received a grant from IPCF during the past year. They have the opportunity to volunteer on the spot to help with a project the organization is doing. They learn of long-term volunteer or board needs of the organization with an eye to giving more time to those that match their passions. The host organization receives a check from the group’s fund to which each member contributes a monthly sum equal to his or her age. The inaugural group members have developed bonds with one another that will last far beyond their Emerging Philanthropist experience.

Women to Women Giving Circle

The Women to Women Giving Circle continued to make a significant difference in our communities through its grants program and community forums. For the second year, Women to Women focused on mental health issues. The Spring Forum, “Mental Health Issues of Children and Youth in Our Schools,” featured a panel of local school and agency professionals who discussed their challenges and successes in working with students with mental health needs. At the fall forum, “Moving Forward with Community Mental Health – What’s Happening Now?,” John McIntyre and Susan Schafer of the McLean County Board provided an update on the County’s Mental Health Action Plan.

The event offered the opportunity for over 100 attendees to network, learn more about Women to Women, and hear updates on the programs that received grants earlier in the year, including some first-hand accounts from program participants. It also provided an opportunity for the Women to Women Steering Committee to thank the donors who make grants possible.

Funding for Women to Women Grants comes from generous donors to the Women to Women Giving Circle. Each dollar is allocated as follows: 40% for current grants, 40% for the endowment to provide for future granting capacity, 5% for expenses, and 5% for administrative help from IPCF. To date, no distributions from the endowment have been used for grants, thus enabling the endowment to grow.

Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP)

YEP had much to celebrate in 2015. In late 2014, the group began an initiative to build an endowment to ensure the continuance of the YEP program for years to come. Every YEP member contributed to the endowment and then, with the help of their mentors and other community members, developed a presentation to encourage others to contribute. By the end of June they had raised over $24,000. This remarkable accomplishment was recognized at the Council of Michigan Foundations’ 2015 Youth Summer Leadership Conference where YEP received the Fundraiser of the Year award.

In February, the group received 19 grant applications and chose to fully or partially fund 11 of them with the $10,000 allocation they received from an anonymous YEP benefactor. Grantees were recognized at an end-of-year celebration held on May 31 at University Galleries in Uptown Normal.

As the year came to a close, several YEP members attended the Celebrating Local Philanthropy Luncheon on November 18, and the YEP-designed website went live in December.

We bid a fond farewell to Blair Wright who, as a student at Illinois Wesleyan University, was instrumental in starting the YEP program at IPCF and was one of its first Mentors. Because of her outstanding work in helping the YEP Endowment effort, among other factors, Blair was honored at the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Central Illinois’ Philanthropy Luncheon on November 4 as Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy (l-r) Mentor Sandy McGhee, Kylie Personette, Ceil Steinbacher- Ages 18-23.
