St. James 3rd Graders Get Schooled On Marine Species Third graders at St. James Elementary School learned about ecosystems and marine life during a visit from Alexandra Stevens, marine educator, Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, on February 11, 2020. The program – “What are you and where did you come from?” – taught the students about inva- sive, native and non-native species both on land and water. The students learned how humans can affect the natural ecosystem and how their impact can ultimately disrupt the entire food chain. Focusing on the species of marine life on Long Island, the students learned about some of the dif- ferent crabs that are currently living in the waters. The Asian shore crab, an invasive species, has taken over the shores because it is more aggressive than the native mud crabs. Students had a chance to observe the two different types of crab and touch a native spider crab.

This is the Place by John Taratunio 1928 - 2018 It’s amazing what We don’t need a passport we take for granted To travel state to state Like the freedom we enjoy We can vote for any candidate In a land that’s enchanted Regardless of his slate

Like our family, our friends We can practice our religion So living in America Our religion and much more and serve any God we please is the place to be And to replenish our needs There is nowhere else in the world Because that’s where people We just go to a store I can live my life with ease truly are free
