Journalism Awards Winners Press Release NEWS FROM THE NEW YORK PRESS CLUB www.nypressclub.org | @NYPressClub contact: Debra Caruso, DJC Communications 212.971.9708 [email protected] THE INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIUM OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISTS WINS GOLD KEYBOARD IN 2017 NEW YORK PRESS CLUB JOURNALISM AWARDS "The Panama Papers: Politicians, Criminals and the Rogue Industry that Hides Their Cash" by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists from the Center for Public Integrity, is the grand prize-winner of the New York Press Club's 2017 Gold Keyboard. This year, the NYPC's highest award, presented for outstanding journalism across all media, honors the ICIJ's investigative collaboration of more than 300 reporters on six continents to expose the hidden infrastructure and global scale of offshore tax havens. An additional 90 winners in 38 categories were drawn from among the 460 entries submitted by TV, radio, newspapers, Internet, magazines and newswire newsrooms throughout New York City and the U.S. This year's New York Press Club Journalism Awards also included special categories for coverage of the 2016 Presidential race. The trend towards more entries from digital news organizations, along with crossover work from traditional newsrooms, continued this year. The awards will be presented at the Club's Annual Awards & Installation Dinner - Monday, June 5th at Manhattan's Water Club, 7 p.m. cocktails, 8 p.m. dinner. "There are a lot of firsts this year, and they attest to the esteem in which our awards contest is held by colleagues from across the country," said NY Press Club president Steve Scott. "The number of entries and the exceptional scope of much of the material received, tells us that outstanding working journalism is by no means lagging, even in these tumultuous times for the craft and the industry." The investigation that produced "The Panama Papers: Politicians, Criminals and the Rogue Industry that Hides Their Cash" exposed offshore companies linked to more than 140 politicians in over 50 countries - including 14 current or former world leaders. Dan Buettner is an author and adventurer researching places across the globe where people seem to live longer. Now he's come to the island of Ikaria in the Aegean Sea, where he says the rate of heart disease is half that of the U.S., and where 20 percent fewer people get cancer. Dan Buettner: The biggest drain on America's health care system are diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. The people here in Ikaria are eluding those diseases at incredibly high numbers. They're getting the good years that we're missing, they tend to live longer lives, healthier, better. Dan has studied longevity hotspots known as "Blue Zones" in Okinawa, Costa Rica, Sardinia, and among the Seventh Day Adventists in California. He's reported his findings in the book "The Blue Zones, Lessons For Living Longer From The People Who've Lived The Longest." Dan Buettner: Because we know only about 20 percent of how long you live is dictated by your genes, the other 80 percent is dictated by your lifestyle.     Photojournalism For this section, we'll be looking at photojournalism's impact on shaping people's opinions of the news & world events. Photojournalism From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening right outside their door. They deliver news in a creative format that is not only informative, but also entertaining. Timeliness The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to audiences. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access).

Through pioneering programs and opportunities for women journalists, the IWMF effects change in newsrooms. We empower women journalists with the training, support and network they need to become leaders in the news industry, and we promote freedom of the press by recognizing brave reporters who speak out on global issues. Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world. For example, the IWMF boosts women’s participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media with a grant program that provides selected women journalists the opportunity to launch innovative digital media startups. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded through the Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier program.

Also included in this exclusive presentation by and for Eyes Of A Generation, are the outside performance theaters and their conversion dates to NBC Television theaters. This compilation gives us the clearest and most concise guide yet to the production and technical operations of television’s early days and the network that pioneered so much of the new medium. As you will see, many shows were done as “remotes” in NBC radio studios with in-house mobile camera units, and predate the official conversion date which signifies the studio now has its own control room and stage lighting.
