Add- ing to the international flair, all three played high school basketball in the Canary Islands -- an autonomous community of Spain.

WILLIS REPRESENTS MEXICO TWICE THIS SUMMER: Diego Willis spent part of his summer competing in a pair of international tour- naments for his home country of Mexico. Willis, who saw action in 28 games as a freshman last season first played alongside fellow collegiate athletes in the 30th Summer Universiade, before finishing his summer playing for the Mexican National Team at the Pan-American Games. The 30th Summer Universiade took place in early July in Naples, Italy, where Willis’ Mexico squad was one of 16 participants. After being one of the older players on the team in Italy, Willis was one of the younger members of the Mexican National Team at the Pan-American games, which took place from July 27-August 10 in Lima, Peru. Despite having little expe- rience with the National Team, Willis saw a lot of game action and even started a game for Mexico, which defeated the US Virgin Islands 92-81 in the seventh-place game. Willis’ best game in Lima came in that start, a 65-61 overtime loss to the Dominican Republic. The Hermosillo, Mexico, native scored nine points and added three rebounds in almost 32 minutes of action.

TOUGH SLATE: According, to MidMajorMadness.com, the Highlanders have the 28th most difficult schedule for mid- and low-major teams in the NCAA. The schedule is ranked the second-toughest in the ASUN behind Lipscomb (11th), with Liberty’s (91st) being ranked the third most difficult in the league.

40-MINUTE MAN: Zach Cooks played all 40 minutes for the Highlanders in the squad’s season opener at Colgate. It was the 15th time in his NJIT career that he never came off the floor and 16th time he played at least 40 minutes, as he saw a career-high 41 minutes of court time in last year’s OT victory vs. North Alabama in Newark.

PUTTING THE NJ IN NJIT: Just three seasons ago, NJIT entered the season with the most localized roster in all of Division-I basketball -- as the average player was just 39 miles from hometown to Newark. This season, the Highlanders would rank towards the bottom of that list, as Shyquan Gibbs is the only NJIT player to hail from the Garden State. Gibbs, who was born and raised in Jersey City before his family moved to Hillside during his childhood, played and won a state championship for Hall of Famer Bob Hurley Sr. at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City.

LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST : Junior captain Zach Cooks was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List, it was announced on Tuesday, November 5. The Lou Henson Award is given annually to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player. The award honors Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons. Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989. Overall, 50 players were named to the Preseason Watch List.

STUDENT-ATHLETES: The NJIT roster features many players who have excelled in the class room. Grad- uate student Reilly Walsh has been selected to the ASUN All-Academic Team in back-to-back seasons (4.0 GPA). In addition, he was named to the ECAC Winter/ Spring Academic Honor Roll and was one of just 10 players named to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team. Senior Shyquan Gibbs as also named to the ASUN All-Academic and the ECAC Winter/Spring Academ- ic Honor Roll last season. Both players have also been named CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees, with Walsh earning the honor in 2017-18, and Gibbs taking the award home last season. #SACRIFICE @NJITHOOPS 2019-20 GAME NOTES GAME 7: RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

KENNEDY NAMES THREE CAPTAINS NJIT men’s basketball Head Coach Brian Kennedy announced that graduate student Reilly Walsh, senior Shyquan Gibbs and junior Zach Cooks will serve as captains for the 2019-20 season. Walsh and Gibbs are each in their second seasons in the role, while Cooks is a first-year captain. “It’s really hard to find three better representatives of the student-athlete than Reilly, Shyquan and Zach,” said Kennedy. “All three have contributed both on- and off-the court, not only to NJIT, but to the Newark area and the state of New Jersey, as well.” The trio, all guards, have started a combined 147 career games prior to tak- ing the court in 2019-20, with Gibbs’ 78 starts leading the way. Cooks was the team’s leading scorer last season and was a unanimous selection to the Presea- son All-ASUN team.
