Ryan Vanderkin The goal of every collegiate team in the nation is to compete for championships each season. The objective remains clear for the 2007 Long Island University men’s soccer team: compete for a Northeast Conference Championship and earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA College Cup.

Outlook “Year in and year out, the expectation is the same: To compete for a Northeast Conference title,” head coach TJ Kostecky said. Kostecky enters his ninth season at the helm of the Blackbirds’ men’s soccer program.

Season The difference between the past couple of seasons and this year’s team, Kostecky says, is the depth and talent of the squad. In addition to the 15 returning letterwinners, the coaching staff has infused the team with size, speed and talent in the form of 12 newcomers.

“The last few years, players have been injured at critical times,” Kostecky said. “This year, the newcomers will allow us to train at a higher level, maintain higher levels of play in the event of injury and the play in matches will be that much better.”

Forwards Three of Long Island’s top scoring forwards return to give the Blackbirds an effective scoring punch. Senior Ryan Vanderkin saw time at forward and defender last year, but will concentrate solely on playing up top this season. With his speed and relentlessness, Kostecky believes the Plymouth, Wisc., native could be primed for a big season.

Determination and a high work rate have helped make junior Jukka Lehto a staple at one forward spot over the past two seasons. Lehto has established himself as one of the team’s top goal scorers, tallying eight scores over the past two seasons. He will again compete for one of the starting roles this year.

Also returning is one of the more dangerous players on the Blackbirds roster in sophomore Ryan Williams. The hometown product from Brooklyn used his unmatched quickness and one-on-one ability to score two goals and four assists in his inaugural campaign and much of the same can be expected this season.

Junior transfer Peter Huijgen from Holland will also vie for time at forward. Huijgen is a skillful player with fl are and speed. He is strong on the ball and is also dangerous taking free kicks and corner kicks.

Midfield Kostecky believes the midfi eld is the deepest and most talented position on LIU’s roster. The Blackbirds return six players that have been starters in previous seasons and add three players who will push the veterans for playing time.

Juniors Mohammed Mashriqi and Josh Merchant are two-year starters that will be Mohammed Mashriqi looking to make big strides as they become upperclassmen. Mashriqi is a playmaking central midfi elder that tied for the team lead in assists a season ago. His passing ability will set up the attack and pressure opposing defenses. Merchant was an All-NEC Second Team selection his freshman year. After spending the offseason with the Bradenton Academics of the Premier Developmental League, he will look to use his speed and deft left foot to make his presence felt on the outside.

Classmate Ryan Vignona saw action in 14 games, including six starts, last year and will use his speed at a wide midfi eld spot. Johnny Chavez, also a junior, started six games for the Blackbirds last fall and will look to use a strong summer to help propel him into a key role. Senior Lior Roisman has been plagued by injury in each of the last two seasons after starting for much of his freshman campaign and will vie for playing time.

Also returning in the midfi eld is redshirt sophomore Adam Kelemet. The Morris Plains, N.J., native looked primed for a big season in 2006 before a knee injury in the spring side- lined him for the duration of the year. His size and ability in the air will add another dimen- sion on the right side. Junior Franklyn Solarte rounds out the returnees and will be looking for minutes as an outside midfi elder.

2 Long Island Blackbirds • 2007 Soccer • www.liuathletics.com 2007 Long Island University Soccer

Three talented newcomers enter the fold and will push hard for both starting roles and key Lexton Moy Season bench spots. Two transfers from NEC rival St. Francis (N.Y.) will bolster the position as senior Josh Alarcon and graduate student Vincenzo Conigliaro make the trek across town to the downtown Brooklyn campus. Conigliaro led the Terriers in points his freshman season and ranked second during his sophomore and junior years. Alarcon started 14 games Outlook during his two years with the Terriers, tallying a pair of assists. Both will make impacts immediately, as will freshman Sascha Donougher. A highly-touted recruit from Kassel, Germany, by way of West Windsor, N.J., Donougher competed for the elite Red Bull U-18 squad and will push for playing time right away.

The midfi eld spot did take a hit this offseason with the loss of sophomore Frank Alesci. The lone freshman to be named to the All-NEC First Team last year, Alesci tore his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the PDL’s Bakersfi eld Brigade and will redshirt this year.

Defenders The defensive unit for Long Island will have a much different look than a season ago, with the three returnees being joined by fi ve newcomers. Leading the returning players are a pair of upperclassmen; senior Lexton Moy and junior Daniel Barci. Moy started the fi rst three games at right back in 2006 but battled knee injuries and was limited for the rest of the season. A native of ’s Chinatown section, he had a productive offseason playing with the 2007 PDL champion . Barci used his athleticism and jumping ability to start in 11 contests a season ago. Both will look to reprise their roles in the back this year.

Junior Emiliano Tramontozzi hopes 2007 is fi nally the year that he makes his presence felt on the pitch. A Brooklyn native with the potential to be a top-notch defender, Tramontozzi has been relegated to the bench by injuries in each of his fi rst two seasons on campus.

Two Dutch players will add much needed size to the backline. Paul de Koning, a graduate student, and sophomore Koen Hogenboom are focused athletes who will add consistency and organization to the defense. de Koning, who stands 6-foot-3, will add size along the backline, while both are capable with the ball and have the ability to initiate the attack as well.

Junior Frank Judice comes to Brooklyn after spending two seasons at the University of Memphis. An athletic defender with outstanding pace from Covington, La., he spent his offseason with the Baton Rouge Capitals of the PDL. Another Louisiana product, Stephen Duncan, comes to LIU with a decorated high school resume. Duncan was voted the Louisiana High School Player of the Year for Jesuit High School and helped his team to its second state title in three seasons.

California native Kyle Land rounds out the group of incoming defenders. Land is an athletic player that can play center or right back. He had offseason surgery and should Alex Fatovic be at 100 percent near midseason.

Goalkeepers Defense is often credited with winning championships and strong play between the posts will provide the timely saves to win important games. Senior Alex Fatovic returns as the Blackbirds’ starting netminder and provides plenty of experience at the position for the Blackbirds. After spending his offseason as the top goalie on the PDL’s he will look to provide consistency for the Blackbirds on a daily basis.

Freshman Michael Wood enters his inaugural campaign with a tremendous amount of high-level club experience in England. Wood’s ability to handle high balls and crosses will help his push for playing time. Classmate Justin Thorn, a Bakersfi eld, Calif., native, also joins the Blackbirds, but he may be limited by offseason surgery.

TJ Kostecky Head Coach••Ninth Season East Stroudsburg, 1983 Coach Head Architect. Tactician. Teacher. Builder. TJ Kostecky has restored Long Island University’s men’s soccer team back to glory. He’s done it by bringing in the top local talent from New York City and its neighboring boroughs, as well as from across the country and across the ocean in Europe.

Kostecky completed the restoration of LIU’s soccer success in 2004 when he led the Blackbirds to their fi rst NCAA College Cup berth since 1986. The trip to the tournament and the Northeast Conference Championship that preceded it, capped off an amazing season which many had anticipated after watching Kostecky engineer a steady climb in the conference since he took over the job. LIU reached the NEC title contest in 2001 and 2002 – losing on a penalty kick both times – before capturing the championship with a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Kostecky has engineered successful rebuilding projects at each of his prior coaching stops. Prior to LIU, he directed a remarkable turnaround at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.

Appalachian State had suffered four consecutive losing seasons prior to Kostecky’s hiring in 1998. In his only season at the school, he led the Mountaineers to a 13-8 mark in 1998, marking the best fi rst-year record for a coach in over 40 years of program history. For his efforts, he was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

Kostecky arrived in Boone following a successful run as head coach and director of athletics at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., from 1994-97. He was handed the reins of a program that had suffered eight-straight losing seasons before he came in and turned the program’s fortunes around. During this tenure, the team boasted a 46-25-7 record and captured two Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference championships. Kostecky was named Coach of the Year in 1997 and mentored one All-American and nine all-conference honorees during his tenure.

He began his collegiate coaching career at New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he led the Highlanders from 1988-93. NJIT compiled a 67-37-11 mark in his six years, capturing conference championships in 1991 and 1992 and making four ECAC postseason trips. Kostecky’s accomplishments at NJIT came in his native New Jersey, where he starred scholastically at Woodbridge Township High School.

In 1979 at age 20, Kostecky was named varsity coach at Jefferson Township (N.J.) High School. He founded and became president of the Jefferson Township Youth Soccer Club and today he serves as Director of Coaching for the club team, FC Copa.

Kostecky credits the success he has accumulated on the sidelines to his philosophies on game preparation and the involvement of his players in the program.

“My approach to coaching soccer is based on the fact that it is different from other American sports. It is really a player- directed game,” he said. “Most coaching is done in preparation for the game as opposed to in-game coaching. By game time, it is usually too late to accomplish anything.

“I also encourage players to evaluate all aspects of the program and give me feedback. I am only one person and the players may have a different read on what is happening with the team.”

Tactically, Kostecky’s practice sessions involve a system called Vision Training that he and business partner Len Bilous developed several years ago. This method helps players make smart, well-informed decisions by improving their field vision.

Throughout his career, Kostecky has been an instrumental fi gure Head in facilitating the growth of soccer in America. From 1987-94 he was a coach for New Jersey’s Olympic Development Team and was

responsible for the training and selection of the state’s top Coach players for the National Team. When he accepted his post at Pfeiffer, he fi lled a similar role with North Carolina’s Olympic Development squad. Several of the players he mentored continue to play in , including former U.S. National Team captain Claudio Reyna of the .

Kostecky has also worked with U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Team members, including Julie Foudy, a captain of the 1999 Women’s World Cup Champions. He conducted an instructional clinic for inner city children at the 1998 NCAA Division I Championships in Richmond, Va., for the NCAA Youth Education Through Sports Program and was again a guest clinician for YES at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Championships.

In 1989, Kostecky founded Soccer Start, a youth soccer program for inner city children. He served as the program’s National Chairman until 1993. The program continues to identify and cultivate the abundance of talent in the inner-cities. He was appointed World Cup ’94 Committee Chair by then New Jersey Governor Jim Florio and coordinated training site activities in the Metropolitan area for each international team.

A featured clinician around the world, Kostecky conducted a coaching seminar in Masku, Finland, in March of 2005 on Vision Training. In early 2005, he released a DVD under the same name for players and coaches to use. Since its release, it has become one of the most requested coaching DVDs in the country and abroad.

Kostecky is holder of an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation and the “Premier Diploma” from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, which are the highest coaching licences given in the U.S. Kostecky’s The Kostecky File professional career began in 1981 as camp director for the Vision Training Soccer Camps. Dr. David Steinberg President

Dr. David Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, was appointed April 1, 1985. During his tenure, the University has experienced a renaissance becoming one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. Under his leadership, the University’s

Administration endowment has increased nearly tenfold from $4.8 million to over $80 million, and its enrollment has risen from 19,000 to over 28,500. He has spearheaded a capital improvement plan, which has led to $400 million in investments in new construction and major renovations, resulting in vast improvements in the quality of study and life on each of the University’s campuses, especially, the C.W. Post and Brooklyn Campuses. New doctoral programs have been added and operating reserves have been created and increased.

Born in New York City, Dr. Steinberg, is the son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue. He was educated at Phillips

University Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England, and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he received both a master’s in East Asian Studies (1963) and a Ph.D. in History (1964). Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as Executive Assistant to the President, becoming Vice President and University Secretary in 1977.

Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for four decades. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its fourth edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Nicholas Platt, as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present. “Dr. Steinberg also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. He recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. He is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” 2005.

Gale Stevens Haynes Provost

“I am a big dreamer,” says Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and an exemplary educator, lawyer and role model. “If you don’t dream, nothing ever changes.”

As head of a doctoral-granting institution, Provost Haynes has achieved many of her dreams both as an educator and a parent. Today, she oversees one of the most diverse campuses in the country, with more than 11,000 students, managing an annual budget of over $150 million.Provost Haynes has led her institution through a remarkable renaissance: doubling student enrollment, creating new facilities, diversifying faculty, forging links with the community and transforming the Campus into a vibrant urban academic center. One of the Provost’s visions – a modern performing arts center for the students and the community – became a reality in 2005. Th e centerpiece of the new complex is the wood- paneled, 320-seat Kumble Th eater for the Performing Arts, where cutting-edge and traditional dance, music and theater performances regularly draw standing-room-only crowds from the Campus and the surrounding region.

In 2006, under the Provost’s leadership, the Campus completed the biggest building project in its history: the $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. With state-of-the-art fi tness and aquatic facilities for students and other members of the Campus, the WRAC also features an outstanding, 2,500-seat venue, open to the public for athletic and civic events. Its Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn ’32 Academic Nursing Center off ers an extensive array of free preventive health services as well as a home for Brooklyn’s fi rst Lupus outreach and education offi ce, all in service to the entire community. A wider array of wellness services, including special cluster of intervention programs addressing asthma and lead poisoning in children, are planned to begin in 2007. In recent months, the Provost also has overseen a dramatic re-landscaping that has nearly tripled the green space for the central campus, with native plants and amenities that create a serene environment and enhance the “college experience” on this urban campus.

Involved in higher education for three decades, Provost Haynes began her association with the Brooklyn Campus as a student, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in counseling. She started her career as director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program. Upon completing her law degree at St. John’s University in 1983, she became Long Island University’s legal counsel before assuming the position of Provost in 1989.

A Queens, N.Y., native, Provost Haynes grew up with a love of books and the spoken word, which she attributes to her West Indian heritage. She has passed on that love of learning to her three daughters – a doctor, a lawyer and an educator – whom she raised as a divorced single parent. “Parenting is a training ground for being a good CEO,” she maintains. Acting on her belief that a sound education is the key to realizing one’s dreams, Provost Haynes is dedicated to creating an urban campus whose varied pathways help students to realize theirs. 36 Long Island Blackbirds • 2007 Soccer • www.liuathletics.com 2007 Long Island University Soccer

John Suarez Athletic Director of Athletics Administration

John Suarez enters his 11th year as director of athletics at Long Island University, where he has overseen a dramatic growth of the school’s ahletic department. During his tenure, Suarez has witnessed a sensational rise in the Blackbirds’ on-fi eld success with 23 Northeast Conference championships and 20 NEC Coach of the Year awards. Under his guidance, Long Island captured its fi rst-ever NEC Women’s Commissioner’s Cup in 2006.

Academic success has also been a priority in Suarez’s tenure, as witnessed by the department’s cumulative 3.02 grade-point average following the 2006-07 season. It was the sixth consecutive year that the department’s cumulative GPA was above 3.0. In addition, LIU was cited with two National Graduation Awards, sponsored by USA Today, in the last six years.

Suarez has also spearheaded the department as it has made major improvements to its facilties. The 2006 opening of the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center culminated a decade of facility improvement at the Brooklyn Campus. The $40 million facility houses as 2,500-seat arena, an NCAA regulation-size swimming pool and a state-of-the-art fi tness center. The WRAC also features a wellness center that is geared toward a growing Brooklyn community.

The Wellness Center came on the heels of other improvements that included the addition of lights to LIU Field in 1999, Field Turf in 2001 and bleachers for softball and baseball in 2003. Suarez has also overseen upgrades to the weight room, locker rooms and scoreboards.

Suarez’s work is not done, as there are plans to further upgrade to the Blackbirds’ facilities, including an extensive redesign of LIU Field and the addition of a bubble atop the Wellness Center, covering the track and tennis courts.

With a keen eye toward the future, Suarez has been mindful of LIU’s past. He helped spearhead the creation of the LIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 with 11 inaugural members, as well as the reestablishment of the Blackbird Club in 2002.

Suarez has also continued to make his presence felt outside the downtown Brooklyn campus. He served on the NCAA Management Council from 2003-06 and was a member of the Division I Budget Committee from 2004-06. Prior to that, Suarez was on the NCAA Championship Cabinet from 2000-03 and served as chair of the NEC Athletic Directors Committee from 2000-02.

Suarez arrived following a three-year stint as athletics director at Mercer County College in Trenton, N.J., which won two national championships and produced 11 regional titles in that span. Eighty percent of the athletes in his time attended four-year schools and every team produced a winning record during his last two years.

Suarez earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he competed on the baseball team. He completed his master’s in sports management at East Stroudsburg University.

In her fourth year, Nora Mavashev is responsible for monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes, ensuring they meet and exceed the University’s academic goals in compliance with NCAA and institutional standards. In conjunction with the director and senior associate director of athletics, Mavashev has formed close relationships with the academic advisement offi ce and counseling center to assist the student- athlete in negotiating the demands of daily practices and games.

The athletic department had an overall grade point average this past year of 3.02. In the spring of 2007, eight of the 17 teams posted semester and cumulative averages above 3.00. For the year, there were 100 student-athletes (51 percent) who had a cumulative GPA above 3.00 and 23 student-athletes (12 percent) with GPAs above 3.50.

The University has twice been recognized by the NCAA and USA Today for having the highest graduation rate in the nation as compared to the remainder of the student body.

David Ledet (2001-04) graduated in May 2005 with a 3.89 GPA as a double major in English and Political Science, becoming the fi rst LIU student-athlete to be named valedictorian. The Houma, La., native was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team for men’s soccer, as well as, the Northeast Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete. A standout defender over four seasons, his intensity and smart play helped the Blackbirds capture the NEC title in 2004.

Ledet penned the following letter just after graduation to head coach TJ Kostecky, refl ecting on his time and memories at LIU:

“I want to thank you specifi cally for your invaluable support for my athletic and academic endeavors. It is the combination of location and administration that has made LIU such a distinguished academic and athletic atmosphere for me. Long Island University

“I have heard from friends of mine who played at bigger Division I schools where they were confronted with coaches and teachers who were often too busy to give them personal attention or too disconnected to understand the importance of both aspects of athletic life at a university. Many did not fi nish their athletic or

Reflections on academic careers. Fortunately for me, this is the opposite of what LIU has been.

“The open dialogue between, for instance, the Honors and Athletics programs allowed me to take advantage of all of the opportunities this university provides. The fact our team won conference and attended the NCAA Tournament while achieving the highest GPA in Division I is a testament to the focus you put on excellence on and off the fi eld. David Ledet helped lead LIU to a NEC Championship in 2004. That same year, he “One should not overlook the fact LIU is located less than two miles from earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine the largest fi nancial center in the world. The signifi cance of this is that Academic All-District 1 Men’s Soccer First Team. career opportunities are close at hand. Internships and organizations aimed at incorporating students into their workforce and providing funding for their participation is a benefi t that does not exist at other universities.

“Part of coaching is being able to connect all of these features in order to encourage teammates to grow as a team and as individuals. In a word, LIU offered me a venue to explore my athletic and individual potential by encouraging excellence on the fi eld and in the classroom. Specifi cally, you were understanding when confl icts inevitably arose between soccer and work. I could not imagine a better atmosphere for growing as a player and a student. I mean that quite seriously.

“This is a brief synopsis of how I feel about my time here at LIU. While you may go on and win national championships and world titles, I will always remember the way it felt to win conference! That is something I can not forget.”

Thanks again, David Ledet
