It describes its lineage from the dedicated reconnaissance aircraft Do 17R, as well as the development of the Do 17 Z-7/Z-10 which preceded the Do 215 B-5 nightfighter, one of the first aircraft to employ radar and infrared sighting equipment. DORNIER Do 17Z Werke nr. 1160 Built as a Do 17Z-2, with two supercharged Bramo ‘Fafnir’ 323P-1 nine-cylinder radial engines; the ultimate, and most numerous, model of the Do 17 produced. Allotted to 7/KG3 (7 Staffel (Squadron), III Gruppe of KG.3 with fuselage codes 5K+AR. Based at St Trond in Belgium. Mon. 26 August 40 Part of a combined formation of Dorniers from KG2/3 despatched to bomb Debden and Hornchurch airfields. Seven aircraft of the 7 Staffel started to bomb an aerodrome, probably Debden, causing some damage. Accounts of its loss vary from source to source; The original PoW Interrogation Report states that before reaching the target, when flying above clouds this aircraft seemingly became separated from the rest of the formation and lost its bearings. It was attacked by fighters, probably one of the recently-arrived RAF Hornchurch, Essex- based Boulton Paul Defiants of No.264 Squadron RAF led by Flt Lt Banham (with their forward base at RAF Manston, Kent) which hit both engines and the cockpit as one of at least one – or up to six, as again published accounts vary - Dorniers brought down by the Defiants, who lost three of their number to defending Bf109s. At around 13.40 hours the aircraft force- landed on Goodwin Sands off the eastern Kentish coast at low tide. Of the four crew, two (Wounded Pilot Feldwebel Willi Effmert, and Bomb Aimer Uffz Hermann Ritzel) became Prisoners-of-War in Canada and two (27-year old Wireless Operator Unteroffizier Helmut Reinhardt and 21-year old Bomb aimer Gefreiter Heinz Huhn) were killed, their bodies being recovered later and buried in Holland and the UK (Cannock Chase German cemetery) respectively.

Although it was comparable with the British Hawker Hurricane and early models of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, it could not hold its own against the more powerful Bf 109E and Bf 110C. The MS.406 was the mainstay of the Armée de l’Air during the ‘Phoney War’, but it had begun to be phased out in favour of the more potent Dewoitine D.520 at the turn of 1940. However, owing to the limited capacities of the French aircraft industry, five of the twelve units that started the war with Moranes had to carry on until the bitter end with the same type.

Rescue of Last WWII Dornier Do 17 Bomber from the Sea Begins
EMBARGOED UNTIL: 0001 hours Friday 3 rd May 2013 Rescue of last WWII Dornier Do 17 bomber from the sea begins National Heritage Memorial Fund steps in with vital grant to enable lift to commence Today, the Royal Air Force Museum is pleased to announce the start of a ground-breaking operation to raise from the English Channel the last surviving Dornier Do 17, an historic Second World War German Bomber shot down 72 years ago during the Battle of Britain. The operation will see the retrieval of what is the only known survivor of the Luftwaffe’s ‘flying pencil’ bomber from the Goodwin Sands, off the coast of Kent where it crash-landed in 1940. Using pioneering techniques, it will take approximately three weeks to complete the lift which has been made possible thanks to a grant of over £345,000 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF). The aircraft is the only known example of its kind in the world and was spotted by divers in 2008. After sonar scans conducted by the Museum, Wessex Archaeology and the Port of London Authority the identity was confirmed as DORNIER Do 17Z Werke nr. 1160 (aircraft history below). The aircraft is in remarkable condition – considering the events surrounding its loss and the effects of spending so many years under water. Other than the effects of sea life such as barnacles, corral and marine life, it is largely intact. The main undercarriage tyres remain inflated and the propellers clearly show the damage inflicted during the bomber’s final landing. The project to raise the aircraft is a complex, complicated and extremely delicate project which needs to be undertaken within a given timeframe due to weather and tide conditions.

Miroslav Jandrić1) A hundred years ago, Serbia was among the first 15 countries in the world to have its own aviation and one of the first five to have its Air Force performing first combat actions as early as the beginning of March 1913 during the First Balkan War. Over these one hundred years, the Serbian Air Force has had 543 different aircraft models and 7,590 military aircraft out of which 3,748 were nationally produced. The idea about an independent development of the national aviation industry was born in the early 20s of the last century when the newly-formed aviation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which had stemmed from the Kingdom of Serbia after WWI, made a decision to set up its own aircraft development industry. Therefore, the ŠB-1 trainer by Ikarus, introduced into the AF operational use on 28 March 1924, can be considered as the beginning of the aviation industry in the region. Rhodes, Aeronautics Editor After at least four rounds of suggestions and reviews over eight years, the Rockwell B-1 bomber was officially nicknamed "Lancer" this spring. That may catch on as an everyday flight-line reference, or it may not. The airmen who fly and fix airplanes have a long history of deciding for themselves what they will call their machines. In the list that follows, by no means complete (either in terms of aircraft that have had unofficial nicknames or as a complete list for a given aircraft, some aircraft will be seen to have several "real" (flight-line) nicknames, some affectionate, others derogatory. In some cases, the disrespectful appelations are the work of rivals who fly some other airplane. In other instances, the tough- sounding name was awarded with fondness and used with considerable pride. Still others were given because the airplane was regarded as a "dog." Aircraft are listed by the date of first flight of the prototype (or specific model), except for such planes as the C-47, which moved over from the commercial world. The dates for those reflect when they joined the military. (Another exception: The SR-71 date is first takeoff of the SR-71--not the A- 12--from the Lockheed Skunk Works.)
