Multiple ecomorphs are present in the stick insect fauna from Papua New Guinea, including the tree lobster, spiny, and long slender forms. While ecomorphs have long been recognized in phasmids, there has yet to be an attempt to objectively define and study the evolution of these ecomorphs.

To shed light on the intra-ordinal and inter-ordinal relationships among Phas- matodea, more mitochondrial genomes of stick insects are used to explore mitogenome structures and clarify the disputes regarding the phylogenetic relationships among Phasmatodea. We sequence and annotate the first acquired complete mitochondrial genome from the family Pseudophasmati- dae (Peruphasma schultei), the first reported mitochondrial genome from the genus Phryganistria Citation: Xu, K.-K.; Chen, Q.-P.; Ayivi, of Phasmatidae (P. guangxiensis), and the complete mitochondrial genome of Orestes guangxiensis S.P.G.; Guan, J.-Y.; Storey, K.B.; Yu, belonging to the family Heteropterygidae. We analyze the gene composition and the structure D.-N.; Zhang, J.-Y.

Here we report a novel egg-deposition mode for Phasmatodea performed by an undescribed Vietnamese species of the enigmatic subfamily Korinninae that produces a complex egg case (ootheca), containing numerous eggs in a highly ordered arrangement. This Correspondence and novel egg-deposition mode is most reminiscent of egg cases produced by members of unrelated insect orders, e.g. by praying mantises (Mantodea) and tortoise beetles (Coleoptera: Cassidinae). Ootheca requests for materials production constitutes a striking convergence and major transition in reproductive strategy among stick should be addressed to insects, viz. a shift from dispersal of individual eggs

  • Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1302-4 Insect egg size and shape evolve with ecology but not developmental rate Samuel H. Church1,4*, Seth Donoughe1,3,4, Bruno A. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

D. Brock* Abstract Type specimens of784 taxa of Phasmida have been located in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW), which is the most important collection in the world for phasmid taxonomy. The species are listed alphabetically, with the number of specimens, sex and locality data, which, excepting very few instances, have never been recorded before. The most important material relates to species described by Brunner von Wattenwyl and Redtenbacher (mainly published in their monograph, between1906-1908) and the majority of Stäl's types. There are a number of discrepancies in the literature, relating to the where abouts of type specimens, which are commented on; in particular, a number of specimens recorded from other museums are only present in the NHMW and data labels invariably refer to the other museum(s) and, in some instances, are known to have been 'loaned' especially for the monograph.

THE LINNEAN I Editorial This autumn we have been celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Lyell (b. 14 November 1797) whose greatest contribution to the advancement of science was his Principles of Geology which first appeared during 1830-33 and subsequently went through 13 revisions. Although this work inspired both Darwin and Hooker and furnished Wallace “with the main features of the succession of species in time” - Lye11 could never bring himself to accept “the descent of man from the brutes”. Picture taken by Dr R. Spearman on the occasion ofthe Lyell Bicentenary lecture 31 July 1997. Left to right: G. Prance, W. Stearn CBE. W. Challoner, Jim Secord, S. Berry, M. Claridge, J. Hawkes (two extant PPLs missing. A. Cave & B. Gardiner). Lyell entered the great debate on man’s origins in 1863 with his book entitled Geological Evidences a5 to the Antiquity of Man, coincidentally the same year that T. H. Huxley published his work on the Zoological Evidence as to Man’s Place in Nature. Huxley’s oook brought him notoriety whereas Darwin was somewhat distressed to find that Lyell’s book gave him no stronger support of the mutability of species than a sentence beginning “If it should be rendered highly probable that species change by variation and natural selection....”. Darwin further confided ( 1863) to Hooker 2 THE LINNEAN “I must say how much disappointed I am that he hasn’t spoken out on species, still less on man.. ... The whole certainly struck me as a compilation, but of the highest quality, for when possible the facts have been verified on the spot, making it almost an original work.

Key words Distribution, Pistacia lentiscus, Vlorë, stick insects. According to PSF (2018) the stick insects (order Phasmida) are represented worldwide with 3286 valid species and in Europe with 19 species. The most common phasmid genus in Europe is Bacillus Berthold, 1827, and it is represented with six species (atticus, grandii, inermis, lynceorum, rossius and whitei), reported from central and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin. Bacillus species are characterized by the slightly narrowed head, smooth or granulated pronotum which is longer than wide, strongly elongated meso and metanotum, tapered subgenital plate and short, stout cerci (Harz & Kaltenbach, 1976: 15, 18; Brock, 1994: 103). Herein, we record for the first timeB. atticus Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1882 for Albania. The new record is based on a photo of a female specimen taken on 11 VIII 2014, by EH and uploaded on iN- aturalist and Facebook page “Regjistri Elektronik i Specieve Shqiptare” (Fig. 1A-C). The specimen was observed on Jal beach, Vuno village, Vlorë region, Albania (40°06’51.7”N, 19°42’04.7”E).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new genus and species of stick insect Phamartes coronatus gen. nov. sp. nov. from Bach Ma National Park, central Vietnam is described and illustrated from both sexes and the egg. The genus is most closely related to Oxyartes Stål, 1875, but easily distinguishable by the presence of fully developed alae, the head armature and the split and asymmetrical anal segment, a character previously unknown in Necrosciinae. Key words: Phasmatodea, stick insect, new genus, new species, Oxyartes, Phamartes coronatus, asymmetrical termina- lia, egg, wings Introduction Bach Ma National Park is a 22000 ha large area situated in the Annamite Mountains, central Vietnam and forms a biogeographical boundary between northern- and southern Vietnam. The main vegetation consists of humid evergreen and montane forest. During an entomological expedition in 2011 a new species of stick insect belonging to the subfamily Necrosciinae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 was collected.

  • Phylogeny and Historical Biogeography of the Leaf Insects (Phasmatodea: Phylliidae) ✉ ✉ Sarah Bank 1 , Royce T
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s42003-021-02436-z OPEN A tree of leaves: Phylogeny and historical biogeography of the leaf insects (Phasmatodea: Phylliidae) ✉ ✉ Sarah Bank 1 , Royce T. Cumming 2,3,4 , Yunchang Li1,5, Katharina Henze1, Stéphane Le Tirant2 & Sven Bradler 1 The insect order Phasmatodea is known for large slender insects masquerading as twigs or bark. In contrast to these so-called stick insects, the subordinated clade of leaf insects (Phylliidae) are dorso-ventrally flattened and therefore resemble leaves in a unique way. Here fi 1234567890():,; we show that the origin of extant leaf insects lies in the Australasian/Paci c region with subsequent dispersal westwards to mainland Asia and colonisation of most Southeast Asian landmasses. We further hypothesise that the clade originated in the Early Eocene after the emergence of angiosperm-dominated rainforests. The genus Phyllium to which most of the ~100 described species pertain is recovered as paraphyletic and its three non-nominate subgenera are recovered as distinct, monophyletic groups and are consequently elevated to genus rank. This first phylogeny covering all major phylliid groups provides the basis for future studies on their taxonomy and a framework to unveil more of their cryptic and underestimated diversity. 1 Department for Animal Evolution and Biodiversity, Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany. 2 Montreaĺ Insectarium, Montréal, QC, Canada. 3 Richard Gilder Graduate School, American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY, USA. 4 The Graduate Center, City University, New York, NY, USA. 5Present address: Integrative Cancer Center & Cancer Clinical Research Center, Sichuan Cancer Hospital & Institute Sichuan Cancer Center, School of Medicine, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, P.R.
