Issue 98: Christianity in China As for Me and My House The house-church movement survived persecution and created a surge of Christian growth across China. Tony Lambert On the eve of the Communist victory in 1949, there were around one million Protestants (of all denominations) in China. In 2007, even the most conservative official polls reported 40 million, and these do not take into account the millions of secret Christians in the Communist Party and the government. What accounts for this astounding growth? Many observers point to the role of Chinese house churches. The house-church movement began in the pre-1949 missionary era. New converts—especially in evangelical missions like the China Inland Mission and the Christian & Missionary Alliance—would often meet in homes. Also, the rapidly growing independent churches, such as the True Jesus Church, the Little Flock, and the Jesus Family, stressed lay ministry and evangelism. The Little Flock had no pastors, relying on every "brother" to lead ministry, and attracted many educated city people and students who were dissatisfied with the traditional foreign missions and denominations. The Jesus Family practiced communal living and attracted the rural poor. These independent churches were uniquely placed to survive, and eventually flourish, in the new, strictly-controlled environment. In the early 1950s, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement eliminated denominations and created a stifling political control over the dwindling churches. Many believers quietly began to pull out of this system. -

Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. The Annual Meeting in November was symptomatic of this – it was held on line, was attended by 50 members and supporters, and allowed a dozen or so people to make valuable contributions alongside the formal business. This built on a pattern previously developed at a committee meeting, and a subsequent members’ meeting in the summer, at which Chinese friends (coming from Shanghai, Wuhan and Hong Kong) were able to join the virtual conversations of British-based members. The year began with a financial gift going from FCC to a joint fund set up by the China Christian Council (CCC) and the Amity Foundation in response to the Covid epidemic. -

2020 YEARBOOK STANDING TOGETHER BY STAYING CONNECTED DIRECTORY GENERAL COUNCIL MINUTES STATISTICS NETWORKING THE BAPTIST FAMILY TO IMPACT THE WORLD FOR CHRIST Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Baptist World Alliance mission statement is “Networking the Baptist family to impact the world for Christ.” Core to this endeavor are ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships and ministry partnerships within the BWA family. Annually, since the late 1920s, the BWA has produced a Yearbook that is today shared with the conventions, unions, associations, and Baptist leaders actively involved in the BWA’s multifaceted ministry “to impact the world for Christ.” Across four sections, the Yearbook details the BWA organizational leadership and member bodies, provides the official account of the proceedings of BWA General Council meetings and the annual statistics of Baptists around the world, publishes financial statements and contribution reports as part of a commitment to financial integrity and transparency, and concludes with a directory of BWA Baptist leaders currently serving on BWA committees and commissions. The Yearbook is provided with the conviction that we are biblically called to encounter one another in loving fellowship and joyful collaboration. While asking for the responsible utilization of included information, it is expected that the Yearbook will enhance ministry partnerships. It is also hoped that the Yearbook will challenge us to pray more concretely for one another and to make direct contact that expresses solidarity with any BWA Baptist experiencing sorrow, hardship, or joy of any kind. It is important for the churches to be attentive to the Gospel and to be humble to receive criticism in order to be God’s faithful witness. The concerns of this paper are what the captivity of the churches in the Reformation and in China are, how these two experiences are correlated and what theological and spiritual significance of their witnesses contribute to ecumenicity. On the one hand, house churches in China are enriched by the discovery of the Gospel of Luther’s reformation and its commitment to the ecumenicity of the churches. On the other hand, the experience of house churches in China raises the concern of ecumenical solidarity with the oppressed people. Keywords: China, Chinese Church, Ecumenicity, Reformation Introduction During the 1990s, “justification by love” proposed by late Bishop K.H. Ting had sparked off a very controversial discussion among the churches in China, not only because theologically, Ting’s proposal was very different from the Reformation’s emphasis on the justification by faith, 1 but also because politically he was the ♦Lap Yan Kung teaches Christian ethics, missiology and value education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The local gatherings are of varying sizes, from two or three to two or three thousand. Frequently the members share meals together, often before or after services which can be boisterous and participatory. Generally, no pastor, priest, or designated religious officiant presides. As the Spirit leads, different members stand to call hymns, declare verses from the Bible, give personal testimonies, or shout praises to God. But, for all their openness about their beliefs and their tireless attempts at outreach, it can be hard for outsiders to understand who these Christians are. Why do they not join existing Christian denominations? What is the basis for their identity and the institutions they create? When asked, congregants readily and happily acknowledge their fellowship and unity with other likeminded groups from around the world, but they may seem canny and evasive when asked for the name of their local church or the name of the church network as a whole. -

At present, about 95% of the Vietnamese population has a religious life, including more than 24 million religion followers (about 27% of the total population); 83,000 religious dignitaries/leaders and 28,000 places of worship. There are over 12 million Buddhists; 6.7 Catholics; 2.5 million Cao Dai followers; 1.5 million Protestants followers; 80 thousand Muslims; 1.5 million “Pureland Buddhist Home Association” followers; over 1.3 million “Hòa Hảo Buddhists; 60,000 “Four debts of Gratitude Religion” followers; 57,000 Hindu followers; about 15,000 “Strange Perfume from Precious Mountains Religion” followers; about 11,000 “Minh Sư Faith” followers; and about 1,000 “Minh Lý Faith” followers. There are 40 religious organisations, belonging to 15 recognised and registered religions, which include the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam; Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Vietnam; ten Protestant Sects and organisations; Hoa Hao Sangha; 10 Cao Dai sects and organisations and one religious teaching centre; six Islamic organisations; two Cham Hindu organisations; Representative Board of Vietnam Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon church); Four Debts of Gratitude Religion organisations; one Pureland Buddhist Home Association; one Baha’i faith of Viet Nam organisation; one Minh Su Faith organisation; one Minh Ly Faith organisation; and one Strange Perfume From Precious Mountains organisation. Religious followers who are ethnic minority people, especially in remote areas always receive support and agreement from local government for their religious activities provided that those activities are in line with provisions of law. -
