A Study of Bishop Ting Kuanghsün’s Theological Reconstruction in China More than half a century has passed since the Protestant Three-Self Patriotic Movement was established, and quickly rose to monopolize institutionalized Protestantism in China. The Three-Self theology remains poorly understood, however, both on mainland China, and abroad. This study intends to uncover why Ting’s work has been constructed in the way it has been, to delve beneath its totalizing discourses as they were shaped and reshaped in the transitional period, and on into the 1980s, when Three-Self theologians were active again. As Ting’s work is considered an official guide to Theological Reconstruction, this examination of Ting’s theology also aims to show how, and why, the CCP accommodated or endorsed Ting’s projects, discourses and evaluations, and what the impact of this was. Centring on the idea of the Three-Self, each of the chapters of this study will further elaborate upon the emergence and development of Three-Self principles in China, and how it helped to form the core of Ting’s theology, most particularly in the 1980s. Chapter One presents the Three-Self’s original meaning. Simultaneously, close attention is paid to how Chinese Christians practised the Three-Self principles, tackled various issues such as the interaction with traditional Chinese culture, religion and science, and Christianity and revolution in the 1920s and 1930s. The key theme of Chapter Two, consequently, is located in the question of how the Three-Self has mutated as a political instrument, and transformed itself into the Three-Self movement between 1950 and 1979. Chapter Three, from a political perspective, is devoted to presenting how we are to understand Ting’s Theological Reconstruction, in comparison with the Three-Self in the 1950s. The key consideration of Chapter Four is to engage with Ting’s idea of Theological Reconstruction in 1980s, which includes his particular way of appropriating Christianity in the contemporary Chinese context. In the light of Stephen Bevans’ classification of contextual theology, this chapter’s three thematic parts point to three patterns which were adapted to construct Chinese theology in the past and contemporary history of Christianity in China. Surveying the central concept of the ‘Cosmic Christ’, and why/how Ting has been so passionate about popularizing this idea in China, this chapter will provide a thorough review of the particular work in Ting Kuanghsün Wenji (Collected Essays of Bishop Ting), and this detailed account provides an opportunity to observe how Ting weaves Marxism, process theology and liberation theology into his theological construction, and how he links his theological proposal to mainstream theology. In the final chapter, this study will investigate the strength and weakness of Ting’s Theological Reconstruction. I will argue that Ting’s main purpose in transforming, as well as reconstructing, Christianity is not to try to make Christianity more easily accepted by the Chinese in their cultural and social situation, but it is instead intended to be used as a ‘post-transformational Christianity’, specifically as an instrument to provide help for the CCP to find a way out of its political situation. 6 Declaration I hereby swear that no portion of the work referred to in this thesis has been submitted in support of an application for another degree or qualification of this or any other university or other institute of learning. 7 Copyright Statement I. Most letters bear a resemblance to their English pronunciations. I follow the Chinese practice of giving the surname first and the given name second. Therefore, Zhou Enlai’s surname was Zhou, and the given name Enlai. However, if the name appears in an original source in a different spelling, I give the pinyin form in square brackets: so ‘Lu Hsun’ (Lu Xun), or ‘Tu Chung-yuan’ (Du Zhongyuan)’. 9 Introduction 1.The last Anglican bishop in post-denominational China: Bishop Ting Kuanghsün and the development of Three-Self theology 1 Often called the last Anglican bishop in what is now post-denominational China, Bishop Ting is a well-known figure in international Christian circles. 2 He can be regarded as the main leader of Chinese Protestantism in the latter half of the twentieth century. 3He has lived through some of the most turbulent periods in Chinese history, and has played a role with significant impact in the Chinese official Churches. Although retired from his posts as head of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (hereafter, TSPM), and the China Christian Council (hereafter CCC), Ting constantly retains a significant influence. 4 His successor in the CCC also spoke highly of him. They indicated thatall the achievements of the TSPM and the CCC ‘cannot be separated from Ting’s crucial perspective and timely guidance’.

    Issue 98: Christianity in China As for Me and My House The house-church movement survived persecution and created a surge of Christian growth across China. Tony Lambert On the eve of the Communist victory in 1949, there were around one million Protestants (of all denominations) in China. In 2007, even the most conservative official polls reported 40 million, and these do not take into account the millions of secret Christians in the Communist Party and the government. What accounts for this astounding growth? Many observers point to the role of Chinese house churches. The house-church movement began in the pre-1949 missionary era. New converts—especially in evangelical missions like the China Inland Mission and the Christian & Missionary Alliance—would often meet in homes. Also, the rapidly growing independent churches, such as the True Jesus Church, the Little Flock, and the Jesus Family, stressed lay ministry and evangelism. The Little Flock had no pastors, relying on every "brother" to lead ministry, and attracted many educated city people and students who were dissatisfied with the traditional foreign missions and denominations. The Jesus Family practiced communal living and attracted the rural poor. These independent churches were uniquely placed to survive, and eventually flourish, in the new, strictly-controlled environment. In the early 1950s, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement eliminated denominations and created a stifling political control over the dwindling churches. Many believers quietly began to pull out of this system.

    Wang Wei-fan’s Evangelical Theology 3 Chapter 1 Wang Wei-fan’s Evangelical Theology Its Significance for the Church in China Today Kevin Xiyi Yao Within the contemporary Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), Wang Wei-fan (汪维藩, 1927–2015) stands out as a theological spokesman for evange- licalism. Wang was born in 1927, and converted to evangelical Christianity in his early twenties. In 1951 he started his theological education and eventually graduated from Nanjing Union Theological Seminary (NUTS) four years later. As an evangelical, he decided to join emerging Three-Self Patriotic Movement, and soon founded himself condemned as a ‘rightist” and doing hard labor on farms and factories for decades. When the Great Cultural Revolution (1966– 1976) finally came to an end, he was rehabilitated and appointed to a teaching post at NUTS in 1980. In that position, he quickly arose as a popular teacher, prolific writer, and key theological thinker within the TSPM. Since his retire- ment in 1999, he has remained active as a writer. In most significant academic studies, Wang has been recognized as one of very few influential evangelical writers, theologians, theological educators, and church leaders.1 Inheriting the fundamentalist / evangelical tradition of the Chinese Church of the early 20th Century, Wang re-interprets and develops the tradition in the context of 21st Century Chinese church and society. The local gatherings are of varying sizes, from two or three to two or three thousand. Frequently the members share meals together, often before or after services which can be boisterous and participatory. Generally, no pastor, priest, or designated religious officiant presides. As the Spirit leads, different members stand to call hymns, declare verses from the Bible, give personal testimonies, or shout praises to God. But, for all their openness about their beliefs and their tireless attempts at outreach, it can be hard for outsiders to understand who these Christians are. Why do they not join existing Christian denominations? What is the basis for their identity and the institutions they create? When asked, congregants readily and happily acknowledge their fellowship and unity with other likeminded groups from around the world, but they may seem canny and evasive when asked for the name of their local church or the name of the church network as a whole.

Ting) is regarded as the main proponent of a cosmic Christology, which is often characterised as a politicised theology. However, since the 1980s, another leading Chinese Protestant thinker, the evangelical Wang Weifan, would also articulate a cosmic Christology – not to reconcile the Christian with the communist, as with Ding, but to reconcile Christianity with Chinese religion and philosophy. This paper will show that Wang Weifan’s Christology is based on a broader ecumenical conversation but is ultimately part of a Chinese evangelical’s attempt to construct a Chinese Christian theology. Introduction One of the earliest theological formulations of a ‘cosmic Christ’ can be traced back to the second- century Irenaeus of Lyon who spoke of Christ’s work of atonement in terms of ‘recapitulating’ or ‘summing up’ all of humanity in himself. This understanding of the cosmic redemption of Christ has been the dominant Christological view in Eastern or Greek Christianity up until the present day. In contrast, this theme has been lost for several centuries in Western or Latin Christianity, in part due to the Western trajectory of modernity and the resultant shifts in cosmological understandings,1 but has been rediscovered in the twentieth century.     CHAPTER 7 Toward a Chinese Christology: An Ethically Oriented Dao Christology Chao welcomed the founding of the New China with great enthusiasm.1 However, since the early 1950s, his contextually theological thinking had to be unfinished by successive political movements. In an article written in 1950, Chao expressed his anxiety for the future of the Chinese church. He added these lines as an appendix to the article: I feel tired in mind and exhausted in strength, and there is too much anxiety in my heart and my mind. From now on, I am going to follow the Lord wholeheartedly, and to obey the commandments of God so that I can eventually finish the rest of my life in world.2 If his theological thinking had not been undone by the political atmosphere of the time, Chao would have been able to further develop his Christology. Following the analysis of both Chao’s early and later Christology in the previous chapters, this chapter will form the constructive part of the present study. In this chapter, I will try to give some creative ideas and basic principles for constructing a Chinese Dao Christology. Dao, which refers to both cosmic principle and the way of human life, is a central concept in Chinese culture. By the term “Dao Christology,” I concentrate on the ethical dimension of Dao and attempt to establish a practical ethical dimension of Christology which may be relevant to the Chinese context, while also paying attention to the ecumeni- cal understanding of Jesus Christ.
