These efforts have had profound effects on university students, faculty and professionals who provide the vital student support services necessary for academic success. This case study explores the challenges that face Kenyan student services professionals within the context of the country’s history and cultures. Kenya’s student service professionals face four major challenges: the increasing costs of attendance, the resulting impact on student behaviours and actions, lack of training and senior leadership, and regular campus closures. Keywords student affairs, accommodation, student housing, student services, university environment, higher education. The challenges of student affairs at Kenyan public universities Kenya is increasingly turning to the promise of mass higher education, meaning a shift from an elite to an open system of access, to help solve a range of economic and social problems (Jowi, 2009; Kenya Vision 2030, 2007). The national government has made its commitment to post-secondary education evident through the addition of over 25 public universities and constituent colleges since 1994 and its adoption of policies encouraging rapid enrolment growth in nearly all post-secondary institutions. Between 2010 and 2013, Kenya made nearly 20 constituent colleges and branch campuses into stand-alone universities. Even with this growing capacity, Kenya’s demand for access to affordable higher education far exceeds the system’s ability to deliver quality instruction and student support (Ngolovoi, 2010; Owuor, 2012). -

HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT CHAPTER 7 LIVES & CONTRIBUTIONS OF KENYAN LEADERS The road to Kenya’s independence involved serious commitment and struggle by Kenyans to liberate their country from colonialism. Some were prepared even to risk their own lives for freedom. They outstandingly featured in Kenyan politics during the struggle for independence and contributed to national development after Kenya’s independence. Kenyan nationalists i.e. Jomo Kenyatta, Tom Mboya, Oginga Odinga, Ronald Ngala and Daniel Arap Moi are remembered for the role they played in the struggle for Kenya’s independence and development. They emerged from humble beginnings, but, due to colonial exploitation, they were involved in politics of their tribesmen. This provided a base upon which they became nationalist leaders. JOMO KENYATTA Discuss the early life of Jomo Kenyatta. • Jomo Kenyatta was born sometime between 1889 and 1895 of Agikuyu parents of the Magana clan at Ng’enda ridge in Gatundu division of Thika district, Central province of Kenya. Murunga Abstract Taking the conflicts that engulfed Kenya in the 1990s as key indicators of relations within the wider sphere of human social interaction, this essay tries to re-emphasize the centrality of the notion of community as a neutral location where identities ought, under normal circumstances, to harmoniously interact. By emphasizing this centrality of harmony, the essay proceeds to examine those aspects of the process of democratization in Kenya that may have easily lent themselves to political abuse, at times generating conflict between ethnic groups. The study offers a general reflection on the pitfalls of democratization in Kenya with specific reference to five key areas that could constitute points of intervention. They include the role of the ethnicity of the occupant of the presidency; land, resource allocation and ethnicity, intra ethn,ic histories and democratization~ personality worship and democracy, and the role of ciuil society in conflict resolution. Each of these key areas reflects tendencies associated with either one or more of four ethnic groups purposely targeted for this study. The baseline connection of these five elements rest on how each one or a combination of them facilitated or inhibited the process of democratization in Kenya. -

When they were upgraded, it was expected that performance of these schools would improve but analysis of data over the recent years showed fluctuation in performance. This paper therefore investigates the extent to which aspects of human resource provision and availability could explain the performance trend of eight upgraded national schools in Western region of Kenya. The study used a mixed method research approach with the target population the target population were 263 teachers and 8 principals from teachers in the 8 upgraded national schools. The sample size was 156 respondents purposively sampled for principals and heads of departments, while teachers were sampled using random sampling technique. Data was collected through observation checklist, interview schedule and questionnaire. The instruments were tested for validity and reliability through piloting in the extra county schools that were upgraded from county schools in the region. Data analysis was done using quantitative and qualitative measures. Research results showed that there was significant change (7.5%) in teacher staffing distribution in the above mentioned schools. analysis of data showed that to cover the human resource shortfall gap, schools employed teachers on contract basis. -

(USA) Online ISSN: 2249-460x & Print ISSN: 0975-587X Kenyatta and Odinga: The Harbingers of Ethnic Nationalism in Kenya By Dr. Paul Abiero Opondo Moi University, Kenya Abstract- The paper traces the political problems that Kenya currently faces particularly the country’s inability to construct a united national consciousness, historical relationships that unfolded between the country’s foremost founders, Jomo Kenyatta and Oginga Odinga and the consequences of their political differences and subsequent-fallout in the 1960s. The fall-out saw Kenyatta increasingly consolidating power around himself and a group of loyalists from the Kikuyu community while Odinga who was conceptualized as the symbolic representative of the Luo community was confined to the wilderness of politics. This paper while applying the primordial and essentialist conceptual framework recognizes the determinant role that the two leaders played in establishing the foundations for post-independent Kenya. This is especially true with respect to the negative consequences that their differing perspectives on Kenyan politics bequeathed the country, especially where the evolution of negative ethnicity is concerned. As a result of their discordant political voices in the political arena, there were cases of corruption, the killing of innocent Kenyans in Kisumu in 1969, political assassinations of T J Mboya, Pio Gama Pinto and J M Kariuki among others as this paper argues. It also sought to determine the relationship between QWL and performance. The study location was Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kenya and the study population was composed of 194 MMUST academic staff. Stratification was used to ensure all faculties were represented. Proportionate random sampling was utilized by grouping employees according to their job positions or rank and a sample of 36 respondents was chosen. Pearson correlation was employed to test the hypothesis between, academic staff QWL and performance. The findings indicate that SSP negatively affects the performance of the academic staff in public universities and recommend that strict loading for academic staff in line with universities full time staff equivalent should be implemented.
