Making money from renewable energy

The government’s new financial incentives for renewables - the Feed-in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive On 1 April last year the UK government introduced a new financial incentive for renewable electricity up to 5 MW (equivalent to two large wind turbines) called the Feed-in Tariffs (FITs).

Unlike previous government incentives for one–off direct payments to eligible domestic renewables, which provided a grant for part of the renewable heat installations, called RHI Premium capital cost of the installation, FITs is a generation Payments. Communities for renewables

In the south west of England, harnessing the abundant wind resources is the obvious big opportunity for local communities, as they hold the key to developing locally appropriate and acceptable schemes. Depending on a local community’s circumstances, and the government’s decision on the financial support mechanisms - the Feed in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive, other technologies may also prove viable options under In keeping with the ‘localism’ the Communities for Renewables initiative. agenda and in response to the increasing number of enquiries from local communities in the region, in June 2010 Regen SW launched a new initiative to support and bring together communities in the south west interested in developing renewable energy projects.

This initiative is an innovative approach to community energy, which focuses on helping communities interested in driving forward their own www.regensw.co.uk/projects/communities-for- commercially viable renewable energy projects, to renewables provide revenue streams to finance their own local low-carbon investments.

What is the Feed-in Tariff?

The Feed-in Tariff or FIT is a payment made to those choosing to generate their own renewable electricity. Once registered, you’re entitled to a sum of money for every unit of electricity you generate – even if you use it on site – and a further sum for the units that you export to the electricity grid. Introduced by the Government in April 2010 to encourage more renewable energy generation in the UK, the FIT is proving to be a big success. Over 13,000 generators registered for payment in the first six months; over 1,000 of these were with Good Energy.

Our expertise

We pioneered incentives for renewable generators almost a decade ago and have been offering our own version of the FIT through our award-winning HomeGen and SmartGen schemes ever since. Recognised as specialists in the industry, we were invited by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to share our expertise as the current Government FIT scheme was created. We have now evolved our original schemes to deliver the FIT and believe we’re the best choice of partner to support you as you become a renewable generator. We’re really proud that every team at Good Energy has expertise in microgeneration and the FIT. It means that from installation to generation, we can be there for you every step of the way, ensuring your renewable journey is smooth and simple. Both our HomeGen and SmartGen schemes have been carefully designed to make signing up for the FIT and claiming and receiving your income as easy for you as possible.
