United Methodist Scholarships www.gbhem.org Active Methodist Church members, citizenship not an issue. Deadline January Rhodes Scholarship

Rhodes Scholarships are awarded to thirty-two U.S. students each year for two years of study in a degree program at the University of Oxford. The qualities required as noted in the application are "proven intellectual and academic achievement of a high standard...integrity of character, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the full." Applicants must not have passed their twenty- fourth birthday by October 1 of the year of application.

THE SCHOLARSHIP ADVISOR: Candidates for the Rhodes Scholarship apply as individuals rather than as nominees. It is the intention of the Rhodes Trust, however, that universities establish committees to encourage and assist qualified students to apply. The Rhodes Trust requires an institutional letter of endorsement confirming that the "applicant has been selected to represent that institution in the state in which the applicant is applying." SMU's interviews and evaluations of preliminary candidates occur in early September. Deadline for submitting complete application materials to the campus committee, including letters of recommendation, is in August.

INFORMATION: The Rhodes Scholarship web site has official information and application materials. Dr. Hugley-Cook, SMU's Rhodes advisor, also has more information.

CAMPUS APPLICATION (required): SMU students and alumni/ae seeking endorsement must submit the application to Dr. Hugley-Cook, Office of National Fellowships, in August. Preliminary application consists of: application form; college transcripts for every college attended; list of principal activities and honors in college; personal statement describing academic and other interests; 5 to 8 required letters of recommendation (see below). Use the pdf application forms from the Rhodes web site [http://www.rhodesscholar.org/]

RECOMMENDATIONS: Five to eight letters of recommendation are required for the application. At least four of these must be from faculty. Faculty letters are expected to be very detailed and to address the applicant's intellectual interests quite specifically, perhaps describing memorable in-class debates and/or outstanding scholarly papers from seminars and independent study projects. Applicants should not select prospective referees solely on the basis of class standing.

FINAL APPLICATION: Candidates who receive the endorsement of the campus Rhodes committee will continue to meet with the advisor to finalize the application. Candidates are responsible for submitting their application by the deadline and confirming that recommendations have been received on time. Selected applicants will be invited to interview with a regional Rhodes committee. The regional committees will each elect finalists. Each of the eight districts will elect four Scholars. Information adapted from http://www.aas.duke.edu/trinity/scholarships/rhodes.html.

Official Web Site http://www.rhodesscholar.org

History of the Rhodes Scholarship The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars were elected in 1904. American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Intellectual distinction is necessary but not sufficient for election to a Rhodes Scholarship. Selection committees seek excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in decades ahead. Rhodes Scholarships are investments in individuals rather than in projects. Accordingly, applications are sought from talented students without restriction as to field of specialization or career plans although the proposed course of study must be available at Oxford, and the applicant's undergraduate program must provide a sufficient basis for further study in the proposed field. Through the years, Rhodes Scholars have pursued studies in all of the varied fields available at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholarships are for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid by the Rhodes Trustees. Scholars receive in addition a maintenance allowance to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and may approve additional grants for research or for study-related travel. George Mitchell Scholarship www.us-irelandalliance.org

Named to honor the former U.S. Senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships are intended to familiarize and connect the next generation of American leadership with the island of Ireland. These Scholarships support one year of graduate study in any discipline offered by an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Scholars must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program offered at the institution. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a $12,000 living expenses stipend, and international travel. Normally, 12 Scholarships are awarded each year. Mitchell Scholars must exhibit superior records of academic excellence, leadership and public service. Strong, demonstrated achievements in all three areas are required

The Mitchell Scholar may study any academic discipline offered in a degree or certificate program at an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. The wide range of academic interests among the Scholars -- from computer science and biotechnology to international relations and economics -- illustrates the vast opportunity for post-graduate study available.

APPLICATION: SMU students and alumni/ae seeking endorsement to a State Selection Committee must submit a preliminary application to SMU's Office of National Fellowships, Perkins Administration Building.

A preliminary application consists of one (1) copy of the following: 1. Application form (signed in ink) 2. College transcripts for each College/university attended 3. List of principal activities and honors in college 4. Signed short personal statement describing academic and other interests, plus 5. A minimum of four of the five (5)-eight (8) required Letters of Recommendations (See Recommendations paragraph below). Please print and use the application forms available on the Mitchell Scholarship web site [http://www.us-irelandalliance.org]

RECOMMENDATIONS: Applicants are required to utilize the online recommendation functionality contained within the online application. Five to eight letters of recommendation are required for the official application with at least four of these letters from faculty from whom the applicant has taken courses (only three academic references are required for applicants who have not been full time students in the present or previous calendar years). RECOMMENDERS MUST SUBMIT ONLINE RECOMMENDATIONS. Their letters are expected to be very detailed and to address the applicant's intellectual interests quite specifically. Applicants should not, therefore, select prospective referees solely on the basis of class standing. If applicant is a full-time student, he will need an online Institutional Endorsement.

SELECTION PROCESS: By mid-September applicants will be notified whether campus interviews will be necessary. Applicants endorsed by the Committee must complete and submit the online final (official) application by the deadline date. Each applicant must submit supporting documentation by mail (see deadline dates below). The Application Requirements and Procedures from the Mitchell web site will serve as a check-off sheet for the official application. GENERAL INFORMATION At least 40 Marshall Scholarships are given annually for two years of study in a degree program at any British university. According to the Marshall Commemoration Commission, the criterion for selection of Scholars is "distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainment and by their other activities and achievements. Preference will be given to candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic programme." Candidates for Marshall Scholarships apply as representatives of their institutions and must be endorsed by their institution.

ELIGIBILITY: The Marshall Commission has indicated that applicants will need a 3.7 minimum cumulative grade point average.

BRITISH DEGREE PROGRAMS: A "specific and realistic academic programme" is a major selection factor in awarding a Marshall Scholarship. Thus, prospective applicants must inform themselves of the academic tradition and degree courses in British Universities described in the current "Rules for Candidates," and "Memorandum of Guidance" as well as other references suggested in the application information. The Marshall Scholarship web site provides links with each British university and a search function for degree courses. Typically, students choose a two-year degree in a course of study based on their undergraduate academic preparation including research experience in their chosen field. Students may also propose a second undergraduate degree (honours degree) as described in the Marshall information or a doctoral degree if a third year of support is a reasonable expectation (from Marshall or a U.S. scholarship foundation).

PRELIMINARY APPLICATION: The preliminary application is submitted online at the Marshall Web site: http://www.marshallscholarship.org/.. A copy of the transcript is also due at that time.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Applicants must request four letters of recommendation. The first of these should be designated the Preferred Recommender and this recommender should have supervised your college or university training. At least two recommendations must be provided by academics. At least three of these recommenders should be in the United States. All recommendations must be done on-line, and they must be received by the campus application deadline. Recommendations are expected to be quite detailed and to provide specific examples of a candidate's level of intellectual engagement with the professor. Letters that address the candidate's grade or standing in a course without providing examples or details are not helpful in the selection process.

FINAL APPLICATION: The application will be submitted online. Applications must be endorsed by the Office of National Fellowships. The on-line application must be submitted and authorized by a designated member of staff. Invitations for regional interviews are issued to selected candidates in November.

THE FULBRIGHT PROGRAM

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." In 2004, over six thousand grants, at a cost of more than $250 million, were awarded to U.S. students, teachers, professionals, and scholars to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research in more than 150 countries, and to their foreign counterparts to engage in similar activities in the United States. More than 1,100 grants are given specifically to U.S. students to study overseas.

The grants offer students one academic year of study, research, or teaching assistantship experience. Projects may include university course work, independent library or field research, professional training in the arts, independent projects in the social or life sciences, assistant teach English, or a combination of these or other projects. Graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students are eligible to apply Goldwater Scholarship http://www.act.org/goldwater

Selected Previous SMU Goldwater Scholars

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The creation of this program pays tribute to the leadership, courage, and vision of Senator Goldwater and establishes in his name an endowed recognition program to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics. The purpose of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, as stated in the enabling legislation, is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. A more realistic statement of the purpose, in today's terms, is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research. The Foundation is supported by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Fund, which has been established in the Treasury of the United States. Funding for awards and administrative expenses derives from interest on the Trust Fund, invested in U.S. securities.

General Information The Foundation will award undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students in the spring for use during the next academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students -- those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the next academic year -- who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during the current academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university using the official nomination materials available to each institution on the Foundation's website.

Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated potential for a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.

Characteristics of a typical Goldwater Scholar include:

1. Outstanding academic record 2. Excellent grades in rigorous science and mathematics courses. 3. Previous research experience, employment in a research setting, or participation in science-oriented activities; documentation of one or more of these activities with a letter of recommendation in the final application. 4. Well written responses to the requests for specific information on the final application. Udall Scholarship http://www.udall.gov/p_scholarship.htm

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation was authorized by the United States Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Morris K. Udall and his legacy of public service. The Udall Foundation furthers Congressman Udall's legacy by awarding scholarships of up to $5000 to (1) undergraduate students who study the environment and related fields, OR (2) to Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate students in fields related to health care and tribal public policy. Please note that this scholarship is NOT solely for Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.

Morris K. Udall's career was distinguished by civility, integrity, and consensus. For three decades, Congressman Udall served his country with distinction and honor. His legacy has impacted this nation's environment, public lands, and natural resources, instilling in this nation's youth a love and respect for these resources. Congressman Udall also championed the rights of Native Americans and Alaska Natives and used his leadership in congress to strengthen tribal self-governance.

The Udall Foundation seeks future leaders across a wide spectrum of environmental fields, including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, and economics. The Foundation also seeks future Native American and Alaska native leaders in public and community health care, tribal government, and public policy affecting Native American communities, including land and resource management, economic development and education.
