MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Susan Pelle Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy _____________________________________ Director Dr. Stefanie Kyle Dunning _____________________________________ Reader Dr. Madelyn M. Detloff _____________________________________ Reader Dr. Kathleen N. Johnson _____________________________________ Graduate School Representative Dr. Emily A. Zakin ABSTRACT (DIS)ARTICULATING BODIES AND GENDERS: PUSSY POLITICS AND PERFORMING VAGINAS by Susan Pelle The vagina has metaphorically and metonymically been the body part that stands in for the category “woman” and it is this emphatic and fabricated link that imposes itself on bodies, psyches, and lives with often horrifying consequences. My goals in exploring performative and performing vaginas are many. I not only lay out how, why, and in what ways the “normal” and “abled” female body established in both dominant and mainstream discourses is, simply put, one with a specific type of vagina, but I also confront the “truth” that vaginas purport to tell about women and femininity. Ultimately, I maintain that representations of vaginas and the debates and discourses that surround them tell us something about our culture’s fears, anxieties, and hopes. Living life as abject can be painful, even unbearable, yet as individuals negotiate this life they can experience pleasure, assert agency, and express ethical and just visions of the world. The artists, writers, and performers explored in this dissertation strategically perform vaginas in multiple and disparate ways. As they trouble, resist, and negotiate “normative” understandings of vaginas, they simultaneously declare that the “problem” is not about bodies at all. The problem is not the vagina. -
THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE, MORMON WOMEN's SEXUALITY, and the VAGINA MONOLOGUES Jill Marie Peterfeso A
GIVING FAITHFUL TESTIMONY: THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE, MORMON WOMEN’S SEXUALITY, AND THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES Jill Marie Peterfeso A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Master in the Department of Religious Studies. Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Laurie Maffly-Kipp Randall Styers Thomas Tweed ABSTRACT JILL PETERFESO: Giving Faithful Testimony: Theatrical Performance, Mormon Women’s Sexuality, and The Vagina Monologues (Under the direction of Thomas A. Tweed) This thesis rests at the intersection of women’s studies, performance studies, and Mormon studies. Using two case studies—a performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues at Utah Valley State College and a Sunstone magazine conference session known as The Mormon Vagina Monologues—this thesis explores how Mormon women have used the theatrical medium to explore their sexuality. By staging or scripting their sexual lives within a community of actors or playwrights, and for a public audience, these women give faithful testimony—not about their religious faith, but about their sexual selves. This public testimony has generated, but it also has enabled the women to find healing, foster empowerment, and reconstitute community. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter I. Putting Women Back on Top?: (Re)constituting Power and Audience in The Vagina Monologues Ashley Elizabeth Gellert Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Communication Beth M. Waggenspack, Chair Rachel L. Holloway Jim A. Kuypers April 29, 2011 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: constitutive rhetoric, second persona, third persona, bell hooks, The Vagina Monologues ABSTRACT Eve Ensler’s goal in writing The Vagina Monologues was to generate a dialogue regarding women’s sexuality to counter the silence that pervades the patriarchal culture that they inhabit. To achieve this goal, Ensler constructs two ideologies—one grounded in patriarchy and another supposedly grounded in female agency and dialogue—to reveal the problems within the current ideology in hopes that her audience will adopt her new ideology and resolve the detrimental silence women endure. To evaluate its success, this study utilizes an eclectic approach— comprised of constitutive rhetoric, second persona, third persona, and bell hooks’ rhetorical options—to determine if the play’s content encourages the dialogue Ensler desires. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project would not have been the wonderful experience that it was without several faculty members from the Communication Department, my family, and friends. Dr. Waggenspack, thank you for guiding me through this project with meetings during most of your on-campus days, good discussions, and tough questions that challenged me to think in new ways. Your availability, support, and enthusiasm have been invaluable since I started here last fall but especially so with this thesis. -

Kendall’s hashtag activism quickly began trending and reignited a discussion about the trouble with white feminism. A number of journalists have excoriated Kendall specifically, and women of color more generally, for contributing to a “toxic” form of feminism. Yet what remains unquestioned in these journalistic accounts and in the scholarship to date, is the dominance of white women as architects and defenders of a framework of white feminism – not just in the second wave but today, in the digital era. -

Fucks, Shits, and Twunts: a Sociolinguistic Study of the Use of and Attitudes Towards Swear Words in York
Fucks, shits, and twunts: A Sociolinguistic Study of the Use of and Attitudes towards Swear Words in York By Tonje Hoff Gjesdal Master’s Thesis in English Linguistics Department of Foreign Languages University of Bergen May 2019 i Abstract in Norwegian Den følgende masteroppgaven er en sosiolingvistisk undersøke av hvilket forhold innbyggerne i byen York i England har til banneord.
