BINGLEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL BelongGrowSucceed Newsletter March 2019 A Word from the Headteacher

Huge congratulations go once again to Miss Shah who was chosen as the Secondary Teacher of the Year 2019 at the Schools awards ceremony earlier this month. Miss Shah is not only an excellent teacher of Religious Studies but has also brought so much depth to our Extra-Curricular programme enriching so many of our students’ education. I am pleased Miss Shah has been recognised for her dedication to teaching, she is one of many in our amazing staff team.

Our Sixth Formers were also busy making us proud last Wednesday. Well done to our two teams who took part in the Enactus Regional Expo presenting their Social Action projects at Beckett University. I was very impressed to hear how well their presentations went and I am interested to hear how their ideas and business plans develop. Well done to everyone involved especially Kiera who won the ‘Team Leader of the Year’ award. Click here to read more about Enactus >>

Mr Luke Weston Headteacher Swim Gala Champions On the evening of Saturday 16th March, Mr Battye and Mrs Brankin took a team to Shipley Pool to represent Grammar School at the Primary and Secondary Schools Gala Finals Night.

Our team competed against Beckfoot, Titus Salt, St.Bede’s & St.Joseph’s and Parkside School. After winning the Championship in the two previous years we were hoping to keep the trophies for another year and remain unbeaten for the third year running. Many races and events later, the students delivered time after time and once again won the Championship overall and the Secondary Schools Mixed Relay Championship, keeping hold of both trophies for another year! Well Done to the students involved: George, Sophia and Rubie in Year 7, Dan and Bailey in Year 8, Sam, Maisie (Girls Captain), Olivia and Katie in Year 9, Archie (Boys Captain) in Year 11 and Tom in Year 12. Mr Battye said, “Well Done to everyone involved, they gave it their all and it really paid off. Mrs Brankin and I are immensely proud of the hard work they put in. Awesome attitude from everyone, they did themselves and the school proud!” Rewards - Name & Fame! Every two weeks students are nominated by their form tutor for their efforts in form time and around school.

Miss Shah won Secondary School Teacher of the Year 2019! On the evening of Thursday 14th March, Miss Shah was awarded the Secondary Teacher of the Year Award at the Bradford Schools Awards!!

Click here to view the article about Miss Shah and her award >> Click here to view the shortlist video shown at the ceremony >>

Miss Shah was nominated by MP Philip Davies who said: “I have nominated Miss Shah for two main reasons: her encouragement of her pupils interests and career choices, and her commitment to extra-curricular activities as well as teaching the curriculum.”

We are so proud of Miss Shah’s achievements, our students are extremely lucky to have her as an educator and role model. Yr 8 Brilliant Club Launch Trip On 26th March, 23 students from Year 8 went on a launch trip to the University of Manchester to be introduced to the ‘Scholars programme’ run by The Brilliant Club. The Brilliant Club is the largest university access programme for secondary schools in the UK. For more information on the Brilliant Club click here >> ‘The Scholars programme’ is an eight week programme that places university researchers (PhD tutors) into schools to teach university style tutorials to small groups in STEM, the Arts and Humanities. At the end of the programme students complete a final assignment. The launch trip included: - a tour of the University campus - a study skills session - a chance to meet and question current students - their first tutorial with the PhD tutors The Scholars Programme is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills and ambition that support progression to highly selective universities and work in partnership with 17 of the countries most selective universities including Oxford and Cambridge. The students are working with two different PhD tutors studying STEM and Art and Humanities subjects: Dale Hodgson and Sarah Browne from Leeds University. Miss Watson commented, “For most students this was their first visit to a university, and whilst a little daunting at first, they soon began to enjoy the variety inthe environment. They saw the museum, the science laboratories, and the numerous buildings containing lecture theaters, libraries and social areas, not forgetting the many undergraduates working independently on projects inspired by personal areas of subject interest. Such specificity engaged our students as they are now aware of how they can select specific topics linked to one subject and study it in depth, as opposed to the subject as a whole. The students then met their PhD tutors Sarah and Dale, and were surprised at how much of their prior knowledge enhanced their understanding of the project they were about to start. Sarah will be focusing on: ‘Why was there a French Revolution?’ and Dale will be focusing on: ‘Can stars float in a bath?’ I am intrigued to see the answers! When asked if they would consider university, there was a unanimous ‘yes’ from all.” World Book Day 2019 Once again our English department organised some great events to mark World Book Day and encourage a love of reading within our students.

World Book day was lots of fun with a number of staff dressing as characters from some of their favourite books creating a human treasure hunt for students to enjoy. Literary Charachter Hunt - A list of who’s who: Norman Crawford (English Teacher) - Grim Reaper (Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett) Jinny Lazenby (English Teacher) - Paddington (A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond) Gemma Watson (English Teacher) - Miss Honey (Matilda by Roald Dahl) Emma Nawaz (English Teacher) - Katniss (Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins) Carly Mawson (Drama Teacher) - Queen of Hearts (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll) Kat Webster (English Teacher) - Red Riding Hood (well-known fairy tale) Fiona Greening (French Teacher) - Ratatouille Chef (Ratatouille – book of the film by Disney Pixar) Jill Boyd (Art Technician) - The Grapes of Wrath by John Ernst Steinbeck Helen Powell (English Teacher) - Hermione Granger (Harry Potter by JK Rowling) Liz Nutter (English Teacher) - The Saucepan man (The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton) Maths department – Harry Potter Characters: Miss Hall - Professor Trelawney, Mr Morrissey - Professor Snape, Miss Pugh - Dobby, Ms Sands - Professor McGonagall, Mr Davenport – Voldemort Our students really enjoyed seeing the staff dressed up in lessons and also walking around the school site. Thank you to all our staff members who joined in. Visiting Author As part of World Book Day we welcomed author Mark Illis into school to speak to English classes from all year groups. Mark introduced himself as a writer of teen and adult novels, and also for TV including Eastenders, Emmerdale and CBBC’s Jamie Johnson! Mark has always been a writer and decided to become one at the early age of 8. Since then he has written 15 novels including ‘The Impossible’ which he signed for students wanting to buy the book. Mark read 2 excerpts from his novel The Impossible and also gave advice on how to become a great writer. All the groups listened intently to Mark’s stories and advice and asked many questions at the end such as, “How long does it take to write a book?”, “How many books have you written?”, “How do you get yourself a publisher?”, and “How do you come up with the front cover design?” We would like to thank Mark for his time - our students really enjoyed his visit with lots buying his novel ‘The Impossible’ eager to read more. School Book Fair Lastly our School Book Fair has been a great success again this year. Mrs Varley has been extremely busy and took a whopping £669.63 In book sales over the 3 days. You raised a massive £334.82 for your school library (that’s 55 new books!). Enjoy your purchases and don’t forget to visit your school library when you’re ready to borrow more. Look out for new titles bought with the funds raised! Year 11 History Trip On Tuesday 5th March the Year 11 History students travelled to Leeds on the train to watch an educational play about Queen Elizabeth I at the Leeds City Varieties.

The play, The Inquisition of Queen Elizabeth I, is designed to help students improve their performance in the GCSE History examinations. It is focused on the British depth studies for the 9-1 specifications. The play was in four parts and each part lead into a workshop session that looked at how the events of the play related to the GCSE course, and offered advice to students about ways of improving their examination performance. The workshop presenters got students to mark answers to a set of questions covering each of the assessment objectives, as if they were examiners in a moderation meeting. Mr Burniston said, “The play was excellent preparation for the students and the group behaved impeccably throughout the day - they were a credit to the school.” Yr 8 Options On Tuesday 19 March Yr 8 students and their parent/carers were invited to join us at our Yr 8 Options Information Evening. Mr Ashley talked through the various options and our subject teachers were available to talk to about their specific GCSE syllabus. All student need to return their Options form to Mr Vasey (office on the BG corridor) by Friday 5th April at the latest. Click here to view the Options Booklet >> Bingley Grammar Welcomes Teacher Training Bus Tour On Wednesday 13th March, 22 PGCE students from Leeds Trinity University arrived in school on the Bradford Bus Tour. Bingley was one of three schools visited by the group lead by Ben McGregor who is the ITT coordinator here at Bingley Grammar. The group also visited Bradford Forster Academy and Dixons Cottingley Academy - all very different and contrasting schools. We were asked to give the student teachers ‘An opportunity to meet members of our Senior Leadership Team and focus on what schools are looking for in their recruitment processes’. The group arrived at 1.15pm and were given a short welcome and introduction to Bingley Grammar School by Dave Foster, Assistant Headteacher, before being taken on a tour of the school. Debbie Hillary, our HR Officer then shared good application and interview practices with the group. After a short question and answer session the group returned to the bus. We hope the group found the day useful and we look forward to following their progress as they begin to apply for their first NQT roles within local schools. Year 10 Maths Feast Earlier this month our Year 10 students excelled in the Bradford inter-school “Maths Feast” competition at Dixons McMillan Academy.

The pupils faced four rounds of questions which tested their speed, mental maths ability and their problem solving skills. They even had to answer questions on A-Level Decision Maths Networks having taught themselves the basics from a poster as part of the mystery topic round. The group worked incredibly well as a team and came 2nd out of all of Bradford Schools which was a fantastic performance. Well done Anjuma, Ashwini, Holly and Rob! Attendance We are continuing to focus on attendance and punctuality and expect children’s attendance to be at least 97%. Thank you to those families who are working hard to ensure children’s punctuality and attendance is high. There is a link between attendance and achievement and therefore it is very important that your child attends school every day unless there are exceptional circumstances. Thank you for your continued support - Mrs Pickles Yr 9 Visit 5 Rise Nursing Home Every other Monday (non-CPD) a group of Year 9 students are visiting the 5 Rise Nursing Home to join the residents in their afternoon activities.

Bingley Grammar School are developing links with the 5 Rise Nursing home on Road as part of the Learning Journey for Year 9 students. During 2019, members of Year 9 forms are being given the opportunity to help out with group activities for the residents. So far students from 9S1 have helped to make wind chimes and chatted with residents, reminiscing about the past. This week, 9S2 helped to make decorative hearts and again enjoyed speaking with the residents. So far Bingley Grammar students and staff and 5 Rise Nursing Home have commented on how worthwhile this activity has been, allowing people from across the generations to interact and gain a better understanding of this condition. Mrs Rawling said of Monday’s visit, “It was great this afternoon - the kids loved helping and did not want to leave. We sewed heart decorations and all the students enjoyed talking to the residents saying they would like to visit again soon.” “We hope this exercise in bringing the generations together will benefit the students by showing them what people of all ages have to offer.” Robin Ward, Associate Assistant Headteacher Spelling & Translation Bee On Monday 25th March our MFL department held the annual Spelling and Translation Bee.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have been working hard during lesson time on their French and Spanish and taking part in classroom competitions to decide which of them would be entered into the in-school final. On Monday, those with the most points from each class group took part with the Year 7s entering the Spelling Bee and the Years 8 and 9 entering the Translation Bee. Mrs Bowen said, “Well done to all competitors. You did really well and the teachers were incredibly proud of you all. Congratulations to the winners and runners-up and best of luck for Round 3 in Sheffield!!” Cambridge Roadshow Over the past few weeks we have hosted three events through our links with Cambridge University. On 28th February Maria McElroy, the Schools Liaison Officer from Queens’ College Cambridge, delivered a presentation to some of our high performing Year 10 students about engaging in “supercurricular” activities in preparation for applying to university. At the same time, Hannah Thompson, the Widening Participation Assistant from Cambridge, met with a group of Year 9 students to introduce them to the idea of applying to Oxford or Cambridge. This month on 20 March, three current students from Cambridge University (all of whom attended comprehensive schools in the Bradford district) spoke to many of our top performing Year 11 and Year 12 students about their personal experiences of life and study at Cambridge University, as well as providing an insight into the application and interview process. We were particularly delighted to welcome Abi, one of our own former students, who is now in her first year of studying Computer Science at Cambridge. Abi said, “Coming from a (very) working class family in Bradford, I didn’t know anyone who had been to university - never mind Cambridge. When applying I focused a lot on the myths surrounding Cambridge and worried a lot that I wouldn’t stand a chance of getting in. Having been here two terms now, I can safely say that those myths were just that. I’ve met people here from so many different backgrounds, and I’m learning more than I’ve ever been able to before. It’s not all work either, I enjoy playing rugby and watching films with my friends to wind down.” Talking with some of our students following this event, it was clear that the enthusiasm and friendly, approachable manner displayed by the Cambridge students has inspired many of our BGS students to think seriously about applying to Oxford or Cambridge. British Science Week To celebrate British Science Week this month, our Science department ran a series of special experiments in Years 7 and 8 science lessons.

This year’s theme for British Science Week was ‘Journeys’, and Miss Cane devised 2 different experiments to link science to the real world. Year 7 took part in the ‘astro-nappy’ experiment where students tested the absorbency of different materials. Astronauts in space have to wear nappies and the students were asked to decide which materials would be best for the job. Year 8 undertook the ‘Squashed tomatoes’ packaging activity where teams of students were tasked to design and build a way of transporting tomatoes from A to B without dropping or bruising them. The groups used cardboard and packaging to fashion their transportation units which were tested on a pulley system for durability and tomato protection. All the students enjoyed trying to devise solutions to real world and outer space problems. Max 7 Textiles Maps Over the past few weeks our Max 7NE group has been creating fantastic weather maps using fabrics. The students were set the task of making a multi-media weather map of Great Britain using different weather symbols to reflect the different regions. This Geography/Textiles cross-curricular project involved the students researching, drawing, designing, measuring and hand stitching. The group have now finished their project to a very high standard. Mrs Braime and Mrs Puddy are extremely pleased with the work the students have produced.

Year 11 Food and nutrition students - Revision Update Many thanks to students and parent/carers who have worked so hard through the stress and strain of our Food and Nutrition NEA sessions. Over the two days students produced menu’s worthy of a master chef final! Mrs Wentling and I are so proud of their achievements. We now look towards the exam and in preparation I have emailed all students with the following links and passwords to: Seneca Learning platform - It is an amazingly interactive and engaging learning platform that covers the content to our new specification. Please encourage your son/daughter to log on and use it productively. Illuminate digital textbook - https://www.illuminate.digital/aqafood/ Which is a fantastic resource full of science animations and quizzes packed full of content. There are lots of GCSE style questions and activities to have a go at. Both revision tools are fantastic and offer our students the best opportunity to revise in a focused and engaging way. Alongside the revision book there are hundreds of activities they could complete! Good luck with revision!

Notes from the Teachers: International French Speaking Week A huge thanks to all who celebrated International French speaking week last week - we had a fabulous French menu in the canteen last Monday and Y7 having been wowing us with their French cultural facts: Daniel Varley, Raamisa Ahmed and Juwayriyah Mir earned chocolate prizes for their interesting facts. We sampled brioche in class and had some French music during lessons. Merci beaucoup! French trip 2019: Mrs Greening would like to say thank you for all monies now received. We still need the last few EHIC cards and copy passports promptly please (before the Easter break). Date for diary: Information Evening Wed 15th May 6.00pm in the Quinn block, Room 2 for approx 45 mins. Students participating need to see Mrs Greening in T6 in an appropriate afternoon tutor slot (again before Easter please) to size up for the trip t-shirt and decide on the name/nickname to feature on their top. Y11 MFL Speaking Exam Booster Workshop: Monday 1st April (when school finishes at 2pm) 2.00-4.00pm. Come for as much as you wish. Feel free to bring snacks, drinks and of course your speaking exam preparation/green books etc (may not be an MFL day for some so worth the reminder). As the oral exams begin the week after, it is vitally important that students attend this to make sure they are as prepared as possible for their speaking examinations which are worth 25% of the final GCSE grade. Students should report to French or Spanish staff in T block as a starting point. Let’s blast those role plays, photo cards, speaking questions for three themes and be sure you can handle asking questions. See you there! Mrs Greening Y11 Final Speaking Exams for French/Spanish/German These will take place between Mon 8th and Thur 11th April 2019 in the Quinn suite. All Y11 linguists have been given date and an arrival time. This is a FINAL GCSE exam and there are no second chances. As discussed at our recent Parents’ Evening, ANY support at home is gratefully received - listening to a response to a few questions per day, encouraging practice using old role plays and photo cards seen over recent years or simply supporting with the revision of vocabulary with online resources such as Quizlet, Memrise or a good old fashioned vocabulary booklet/revision guide. By this time in two weeks, it will all be over!
