PRESERVING LGBTQ HISTORY The chapters in this section provide a history of archival and architectural preservation of LGBTQ history in the United States. An archeological context for LGBTQ sites looks forward, providing a new avenue for preservation and interpretation. This LGBTQ history may remain hidden just under the ground surface, even when buildings and structures have been demolished. THE PRESERVATION05 OF LGBTQ HERITAGE Gail Dubrow Introduction The LGBTQ Theme Study released by the National Park Service in October 2016 is the fruit of three decades of effort by activists and their allies to make historic preservation a more equitable and inclusive sphere of activity. The LGBTQ movement for civil rights has given rise to related activity in the cultural sphere aimed at recovering the long history of same- sex relationships, understanding the social construction of gender and sexual norms, and documenting the rise of movements for LGBTQ rights in American history. -

People were looking for someone who could lead the country out of the Great QUESTIONS Depression. Since 1929 the United States had been in terrible trouble. Banks went out of business, and millions of people lost all of their savings. One out of every five people lost their jobs. To make matters worse, terrible droughts were drying up America’s farmland. Land across the Great Plains turned to dust and was literally blowing away. People were scared and desperate. In his first speech as president, FDR brought hope to people when he said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear Great Depression: the period between 1929–1939 when the United States and many other countries faced major financial problems literally: actually 104 Nonfiction Inquiry 5 itself.” He also brought them his wife Eleanor. Americans didn’t know it yet, but she would be a First Lady like no other. Eleanor the Activist Eleanor Roosevelt stood nearly six feet tall and had buck teeth and a high voice. -

Included are the President's personal and family papers, papers covering his public career at the state and national level, those of Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as those of many of his associates in public and private life. The Library, a gift to the American people from the President, had its beginnings in 1939 when Franklin Roosevelt turned over to the Government 16 acres of the family estate at Hyde Park. -

Bolzenius 2013 Abstract In March 1945, a WAC (Women’s Army Corps) detachment of African Americans stationed at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts organized a strike action to protest discriminatory treatment in the Army. As a microcosm of military directives and black women’s assertions of their rights, the Ft. Devens strike provides a revealing context to explore connections between state policy and citizenship during World War II. This project investigates the manner in which state policies reflected and reinforced rigid distinctions between constructed categories of citizens, and it examines the attempts of African American women, who stood among the nation’s most marginalized persons, to assert their rights to full citizenship through military service. The purpose of this study is threefold: to investigate the Army’s determination to strictly segment its troops according to race and gender in addition to its customary rank divisions; to explore state policies during the war years from the vantage point of black women; and to recognize the agency, experiences, and resistance strategies of back women who enlisted in the WAC during its first years. The Ft. Devens incident showcases a little known, yet extraordinary event of the era that features the interaction between black enlisted women and the Army’s white elite in accordance with standard military protocol. -

The FDRs: A Most Extraordinary First Couple presented by Jeri Diehl Cusack Visiting “the Roosevelts” in Hyde Park NY Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882 - 1945 Franklin was the only child of James Roosevelt, 53, and his 2nd wife, Sara Delano, 27, of Hyde Park, New York. FDR was born January 30, 1882 after a difficult labor. Sara was advised not to have more children. His father died in 1900, when FDR was 18 years old & a freshman at Harvard. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt 1884 - 1962 Eleanor, the oldest child & only daughter of Elliott Roosevelt & his wife Anna Rebecca Hall, was born in NYC on October 11, 1884. The Roosevelts also had two younger sons, Elliott, Jr,.and Gracie Hall. Two Branches of the Roosevelt Family Tree Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt arrived in New Amsterdam about 1649 & died about 1659. His son Nicholas Roosevelt (1658 - 1742) was the common ancestor of both the Oyster Bay (Theodore) & Hyde Park (Franklin) branches of the family. Kathleen Dwyer “A More Perfect Union – Year “ September 14, 2011 Paper 3 “No Ordinary Time” In No Ordinary Time, Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote a detailed account of the relationship between Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt set against two great events: the New Deal and World War II. According to Goodwin, these two great events ushered in modern America. Goodwin highlighted America’s transformation by examining the players, who shaped not only the Roosevelt administration but the entire nation. During the Roosevelt era, the White House served home to myriad of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s confidants and advisors. There was the trustworthy Harry Hopkins and his young daughter. Franklin’s secretary, Missy LeHand, also lived in the White House and was madly in the love the president. Then, there was the former journalist, Lorena Hickok, who was madly in love with Eleanor. However, the two most central characters living in the White House were the president and first lady: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Goodwin made their relationship central to understanding not only the Roosevelt White House but also the World War II era. And in so doing, Goodwin depicted how both the New Deal and World War II modernized and transformed America into a world superpower. Throughout the novel, Goodwin shifted between analysis of historical events and biographical anecdotes of the lives the historical characters. Goodwin left a lasting impression of what the war looked like from the perspectives of its most important participants. Goodwin also highlighted the two events that forever changed Franklin 1 were his overcoming polio that left him handicapped and the effect his affair with Lucy Mercer had on his relationship with Eleanor. -

Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Trade Books’ Historical Representation of Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the World John H. Bickford III Taylor A. Badal Eastern Illinois University Contemporary education initiatives require English language arts educators spend half their time on non-fiction and history and social studies teachers to include diverse sources. Beginning in the early grades within the aforementioned curricula, students are to scrutinize multiple texts of the same historical event, era, or figure. Whereas trade books are a logical curricular resource for English language arts and history and social studies curricula, the education mandates do not provide suggestions. Research indicates trade books are rife with historical misrepresentations, yet few empirical studies have been completed so more research is needed. Our research examined the historical representation of Eleanor Roosevelt within trade books for early and middle-grades students. Identified historical misrepresentations included minimized or omitted accounts of the societal contexts and social relationships that shaped Mrs. Roosevelt’s social conscience and civic involvement. Effective content spiraling, in which complexity and nuance increase with grade level, between early and middle-grades trade books did not appear. Pedagogical suggestions included ways to position students to identify the varying degrees of historical representation within different trade books and integrate supplementary primary sources to balance the historical gaps. This thesis celebrates these courageous female aviators who volunteered to serve their nation during World War II, and to risk it all: their lives, their personal and professional reputations, simply for the opportunity to become the United States’ first women military aviators. This thesis is specifically dedicated to the five women that opened their hearts and their homes to me, who willingly shared their intimate life stories with me, and trusted me to tell their unvarnished stories: Beverly Loyola (Beesie) Beesemyer, Florence “Shutsy” Reynolds, Barbara (Bobbi) Willis Heinrich, Millicent (Millie) Amanda Peterson Young and Jean Landis. Without their generosity, patience, and kindness none of this would have been possible. In the 1940s these women bravely challenged prevailing notion that women were second class citizens, informed by patriarchy and were ultimately deemed “unnecessary and undesirable” by Congressman Robert C.W. Ramspeck (D-GA) who sought to discredit them. Some in society labeled them unfeminine, promiscuous, perverse or immoral, and some defied heterosexual norms simply because they chose to pursue their love of flight which was perceived to transgress gender roles and eschew societal norms. -
