Os resultados apontaram experiências laborais mais negativas nos profissionais casados, nos que não praticavam exercício físico, nos que exerciam maioritariamente funções no exterior das instalações de trabalho, nos que trabalhavam mais horas por semana e nos que possuíam categorias profissionais mais baixas. Os processos de avaliação cognitiva foram deter- minantes na explicação da experiência de stress ocupacional, burnout e sintomatologia depressiva. O stress ocupacional e a avaliação cognitiva foram variáveis importantes na predição do burnout. Em conclusão, os resultados evidenciaram a importân- cia das variáveis pessoais e profissionais na experi- ência de stress laboral, bem como a adaptabilidade do modelo transacional no estudo do stress laboral nesta classe de profissionais. Embora todas as profissões sejam geradoras de algum grau de stress, algumas merecem maior atenção, dado os níveis mais acentuados de pressão que revelam. Neste caso, encontramos as forças de segurança, sendo apontada como uma das ocupa- ções de maior risco em termos de stress ocupacional (Richardsen e col., 2006) mas, curiosamente, são ainda insuficientes as investigações efetuadas nesta população (Maslach-Pines e Keinan, 2006). Por isso, justifica-se a realização de estudos que procurem compreender as condições de exercício laboral nesta classe profissional. Neste sentido, este trabalho foi realizado com profissionais das forças de segurança da região Norte de Portugal, procurando responder a duas questões principais. Em primeiro lugar, observou-se a experiência profissional dos participantes ao nível do stress, burnout (esgotamento) e sintomatologia depressiva. Utilizing a sample of adults living with HIV/AIDS in rural communities of the United States, this secondary data analysis examined the interaction between cognitive appraisals of stressful life events, methods of coping, and depressive symptomology. This study was designed to investigate the proposals that coping strategies tend to match the appraised controllability of a stressor (matching hypothesis) and that the effectiveness of varying coping strategies is dependent on the appraised controllability of a stressful event (goodness-of-fit hypothesis). Self- reported data obtained from 304 HIV-seropositive adults living in non-metropolitan areas indicated that high levels of appraised control significantly predicted use of problem- focused coping.

Specifically, we hypothesized that the association between self-compassion and stress coping would be mediated by cognitive appraisals (per- ceived threat and controllability) of stressful events. At Time 1, Japanese undergraduates (N = 217; 126 women, 90 men, and 1 unknown; mean age 18.57 years, SD = 0.96) completed the Japanese version of the Self-Compassion Scale. One month later (Time 2), they recalled a stressful event that had happened in the past month and completed measures of cognitive appraisals of the event and coping strategies that they had employed. Structural equation modeling showed that self-compassion at Time 1 was negatively related to avoidance-oriented coping at Time 2. Moreover, self-compassion promoted adaptive coping via reduced threat toward and greater controllability of the stressful event. The current study provides additional evidence that cognitive appraisals (threat and controllability) could mediate the influence of self-compassion in stress coping processes. Ordinarily, Sarah spends her days researching and writing briefs, talking with clients, and brainstorming legal issues with colleagues. To- day, however, she opened the mail to find a notice from the court setting a date for her first oral argument. She suffers the first of several anxiety attacks: rapid heart rate, racing thoughts, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, nausea, and feelings of panic and tension. As she reads the form letter, her hands tremble. This is the day she has dreaded. She loves to write and research, but the thought of appearing in front of three robed judges and getting questioned for thirty minutes seems insurmountable. Sarah tells her supervisor that she is not feeling well, takes a sick day, and goes home.
