We are pleased to host our participants, both established investiga- tors and young promising researchers, from more than 70 countries, and hope that your stay in Rome is exciting and re- warding. The first International Symposium on ATHEROSCLEROSIS was held in 1965, some 40 years ago. Well in the twenty-first century, it is exciting to note the dramatic changes in the perception of the field within the last decade alone and to ex- plore the explosion in the field of atherosclerosis prevention and treatment. The ISA2006 will cover the traditional in- terests of atherosclerosis specialists, such as lipid/lipoprotein, lipid lowering drugs, diets, and clotting mechanisms as related to lipids, but will also expand the focus to new and exciting areas, which may potentially affect the development of atherosclerosis and ultimately improve patient care. Themes will include obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, as well as novel diagnostic technologies for arterial disease determination and biochemical traits affecting atherosclerosis development and outcomes. -

Enhancing Healthcare Decision-Making Process: Findings from Orthopaedic Field
administrative sciences Article Enhancing Healthcare Decision-Making Process: Findings from Orthopaedic Field Irene Schettini * , Gabriele Palozzi and Antonio Chirico Department of Management and Law, University of Rome Tor Vergata, 00133 Rome, Italy; [email protected] (G.P.); [email protected] (A.C.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +39-0672-595-401 Received: 29 October 2020; Accepted: 20 November 2020; Published: 25 November 2020 Abstract: In the healthcare field, the decision-making process is part of the broad spectrum of “clinical reasoning”, which is recognised as the whole process by which a physician decides about patients’ treatments and cares. Several clinicians’ intrinsic variables lead to this decisional path. Little is known about the inference of these variables in triggering biases in decisions about the post-discharge period in the surgical field. Accordingly, this research aims to understand if and how cognitive biases can affect orthopaedists in decision-making regarding the follow-up after knee and hip arthroplasty. To achieve this goal, an interview-based explorative case study was run. Three key-decisional orthopaedic surgeons were interviewed through a quality control tool aimed at monitoring the causes and effects of cognitive distortions. Coherently with the literature, eight biases come to light. All the interviewees agree on the presence of four common biases in orthopaedic surgery (Affect heuristic, Anchoring, Halo effect, Saliency). The other biases (Groupthink, Availability, Overconfidence, Confirmation), instead, depending on specific physicians’ intrinsic variables; namely: (i) working experience; (ii) working context. This finding contributes to the debate about the application of cognitive tools as leverage for improving the quality of clinical decision-making process and, indirectly, enhancing better healthcare outcomes. -

Washington, D.C. 20250 Director Tom Frieden, M.D. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1600 Clifton Rd Atlanta, GA 30333 Re: “Collecting On-Farm Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Data; Public Meeting; Request for Comments,” Docket No. FDA-2015-N-2768 Dear Commissioner Ostroff, Secretary Vilsack, and Director Frieden: FDA took a valuable step in May when it issued a proposed rule to collect species-specific antibiotic sales estimates. Thank you for collaborating with USDA and CDC to obtain public input on possible approaches for collecting additional on-farm antibiotic use and resistance data. To be most useful, on- farm use information should be quantitative and should shed light on why antibiotics are used in food animal production: for treating diseases or for preventing or controlling their spread. This information is essential to enhancing antibiotic stewardship, evaluating whether FDA policies and industry interventions are reducing unnecessary use, and illustrating trends in use and resistance. Your on-farm data collection plan should include the following elements: • Antibiotic class used and medical importance. • Dispensing status. • Purpose of antibiotic use. • Species and animal production class receiving the antibiotic. • Route of administration. Increasing on-farm sampling for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in live animals could help explain where and when antibiotic resistance emerges in the food animal production chain. -
