The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826.

The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated.

    The role of Jews in theBritish colonies of the Western Mediterranean* T. M. BENADY The British Isles and Morocco, both situated on the western edge of the old Mediterranean world, have been linked by trade since early times. Moroccans have not traditionally been ocean sailors, as their long Atlantic coastline faced miles of endless watery waste and held no attractions prior to the discovery of America. But Englishmen have been keen Atlantic sailors, and Morocco became the firstnon-European countrywith which some British people had direct contact. Itwas enshrined in popular imagination as an exotic and very rich country, as the - legend of Dick Whittington bears out although the story represents the percep? tions of the 16th rather than the 14th century, when the historical Whittington was thrice Lord Mayor of London. A country of high mountains, deserts and fertile plains, cut off from close contacts with the north by the Spanish Reconquista, and from the east by the long rivalrywith the Ottoman Empire, Morocco became a conservative and inward looking country from the lateMiddle Ages onwards. The isolation was intensified by the tenacious hold on the popular culture of Sufi mysticism which became an important political force.1 Since 1510 Morocco has been ruled by two dynasties, both of them founded by country sheikhs from the south with conservative attitudes. Until the English and Dutch entered on the scene in the 16th and 17th centur? ies, foreign trade was conducted largely by the Genoese. It is hardly surprising that in this very conservative and psychologically isolated country much of the organization of the internal tradewas in the hands of the ancient but cosmopolitan Jewish community.2 The Jewish community of Morocco was heavily depleted in the Almohade persecutions of the 12th century, but was afterwards considerably reinforced by successive waves of immigrants from Spain.

    Life and Work: Poverty, Wealth and History in the East End of London Part Two: Family and Community: The Social Life of the East End Community Resource The Jewish Community in London By Rosemary O’Day, Professor of History and Director of the Charles Booth Research Centre at the Open University By kind permission of Rosemary O’Day In recent times the history of the Jews in London has frequently been seen through the eyes of prejudiced and puzzled, if often admiring, gentiles. Often the surviving sources do not permit us to dispense entirely with this perspective. Moreover, this gentile view does enable us to comprehend the informal ghettoization of London’s jewry. Yet, now, historians are turning ever more to an internal history of the London Jewish community—concentrating on its workaday world, its culture and its politics—to a study of its relations with the gentile world and to a comparative approach. In 1850 British Jews numbered some 35,000; by 1881 their numbers had swollen to 60,000, due both to natural increase and to continuous migration from Germany, Holland and particularly, Poland. Throughout the Diaspora, the Jews who were already settled in England had a reputation for hospitality second to none. Synagogues in Holland, for example, would pay the steamer masters handsomely to export undesirables from their own congregations to those in London, knowing full well that the London Jews would not turn their backs on poor unfortunates. Exodus Jews had long felt insecure within the Russian Empire and, after the assassination of the more tolerant Alexander II, they were driven from the countryside and forced to live in the towns along the Pale of Settlement, excluded from education and from public service.

    UCL LIBRARY SERVICES From Small Library Beginnings A brief history of UCL Library Services An exhibition of material from UCL Special Collections 4 March – 13 December 2019 From Small Library Beginnings A brief history of UCL Library Services An exhibition of material from UCL Special Collections 4 March – 13 December 2019 #ucllibrariesexhib Preface UCL Library Services today comprises a modern, multi-site department with print collections numbering two million books, rich and diverse archives, extensive online resources and over 4,000 study spaces. The earliest collection, built up by the first Librarian, the Reverend Dr Francis Augustus Cox, numbered just 6,500 volumes in 1829. These were accommodated in what was known as the ‘Small Library’ at the southern end of the Wilkins Building. For some 40 years after 1831, with no formally appointed Librarian and limited funds, the collections grew mainly through donations and bequests. In the twentieth century the Library survived air raids and continued to grow, while in 1919 UCL’s School of Librarianship opened – precursor to the Department of Information Studies now proudly celebrating its centenary. This exhibition narrates the unique and absorbing history of UCL’s libraries. It highlights some of the spaces, collections and people that have been integral to their development, drawing on a selection of items from UCL Special Collections.     80 MISCELLANIES. 9 Jew Brokers of the City of London The gradual resettlement of the Jews in England during the Protectorate of Cromwell, the defeat of the various attempts to dislodge them and the eventual admission of Solomon Dormido to the Royal Exchange, to be followed by other Jews in the period 1671-1697, have been graphically recorded by Mr. Lucien Wolf.1 An intensive study of the Guildhall Repertories which contain the summaries of the proceedings of the Court of Aldermen from 1657-1708 has moved the present writer to set down certain additional information about Jew brokers. Thanks to the kindness of Mr. P. E. Jones, Assistant Keeper of the City of London Records at Guildhall, he has also had access to a book2 containing the names of all the Jew brokers who acted from 1708-1801. These names are set out in the form of an appendix to this Paper, and will be the subject of further investigation. The officeof broker is of ancient origin and the holder of it in Richard IFs time was defined as "one who was a broker trader by misfortune"3 and none but such were formerlyadmitted to that employment. In the reign ofEdward III,4 itwas enacted "that no strangermerchant or other ' stranger shall use or exercise the occupation of brocage' between mer? chant and merchant." The policy of the City Fathers with regard to the admission of brokers was always a restrictive one, but itwill be seen that these two old ordinances had to be tacitly ignored, although the Alder manic reports5 on brokers even as late as 1674, always emphasized that "broking was principally intended for the support and livelihood of 1 Jewish Chronicle, Nov.
