Dissertação (Metrado em Literaturas de Língua Inglesa) – Instituto de Letras, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2010. O objetivo desta dissertação é investigar e analisar a transgressão e o borramento de fronteiras de gênero (categoria narrativa) e sua conexão com a emancipação do sujeito feminino no nível da narrativa nos dois últimos romances de Angela Carter, Nights at the Circus e Wise Children, à luz da teoria da intertextualidade paródica. O tipo de opressão pela qual passam as narradoras/protagonistas Fevvers e Dora Chance bem como as outras personagens femininas em ambos os romances mostra-se intrinsicamente relacionada às restrições ideológicas e formais tradicionalmente impostas aos gêneros (categoria narrativa) pelo patriarcalismo. Estas são precisamente as normas e regulamentos que Angela Carter se propõe desvelar, questionar e minar de forma a preparar o caminho para novas alternativas bem como diferentes possibilidades de futuro tanto para homens como mulheres. A principal contribuição desta dissertação está em sua tentativa de relacionar gênero (categoria narrativa), gênero (determinação sexual) e mudança social a fim de encorajar mais pesquisas sobre o poder político que subjaz a pós-moderna reescritura ou ‘reinvenção’ e borramento de gêneros (categoria narrativa) praticada pelo sujeito feminino. ABSTRACT The aim of this dissertation is to investigate and analyse the transgression and blurring of genre boundaries and its connection with the emancipation of the female subject on the level of the narrative in Angela Carter’s last two novels, Nights at the Circus and Wise Children, in the light of parodic intertextuality theory. The sort of oppression the narrators/protagonists Fevvers and Dora Chance as well as the other female characters undergo in both novels turn out to be intrinsically related to the ideological and formal constraints traditionally imposed on genres by patriarchy. These are precisely the norms and regulations Angela Carter sets out to unveil, question and undermine so as to pave the way for new alternatives as well as different future possibilities for men and women alike. The main contribution of this dissertation lies in its attempt to relate genre, gender and social change in order to nourish further research on the political power underlying postmodern female rewriting or ‘reinvention’ and blurring of genres. I swallow Angela Carter whole, and then I rush to buy Alka Seltzer. The "minimalist" nouvelle cuisine alone cannot satisfy my appetite for fiction. I need a "maximalist" writer who tries to tell us many things, with grandiose happenings to amuse me, extreme emotions to stir my feelings, glorious obscenities to scandalise me, brilliant and malicious expressions to astonish me. This is partly because, as Hermione Lee has commented, Carter "was always in revolt against the 'tyranny of good taste'" (316). As a cham• pion of moral pornography, a cultural dissident who dared to disparage Shakespeare, and a culinary iconoclast who criticised the highly-esteemed cookery writer Elizabeth David, Carter out• raged many people. Yet this impiety also gives her work its ap• peal.1 Like the critical essays, her fiction is deliciously "improper" in that it interrogates and rejects what Hélène Cixous calls the realm of the proper, a masculine economy based on the principles of authority, domination and owner• ship — a realm in which, disempowered and dispossessed, women are without property ("Castration" 42, 50). Her fiction has an unsettling effect precisely because Carter seeks to "up• set" the patriarchal order, in part through her representation of consumption, which, by revealing and refiguring the relation• ship between women, food, and power, challenges the struc• tures that underpin patriarchy.

    The Politics of Gender and the Visual in Virginia Woolf and Angela Carter Caleb Sivyer Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (English Literature) School of English, Communication & Philosophy Cardiff University 2015 Summary This thesis investigates the relationship between gender and the visual in texts by Virginia Woolf and Angela Carter. Drawing on visual studies, gender studies and film theory, I argue that my selected texts present the gendered visual field as dynamic and layered, foregrounding both a masculine economy of vision and the possibility of alternative forms of gendered subjectivity and ways of looking. The Introduction discusses the key methodological frameworks used in this thesis, including Jonathan Crary’s account of the historical construction of vision, the debates around gender, mobility and visuality centred on the figure of the flâneur, and Laura Mulvey’s account of the cinematic male gaze. I argue for the importance of recognising that the field of vision is a site of contestation composed of an interplay of connected gendered looks. Chapter One focuses on the unresolved tensions between different gendered looks in Mrs Dalloway (1925) which take place across a number of spaces and are mediated by a variety of visual frames. Chapter Two turns to Orlando (1928) to explore Woolf’s playful subversion of a masculine visual economy through a protagonist who changes sex and dress. In addition to this vacillation of appearance, I argue that the text’s representations of London in the 1920s, in particular the department store and motor-car, contribute to a proliferation of gendered looks. In turning to The Passion of New Eve (1979), Chapter Three shows how Carter foregrounds the violence involved in the performance of gender, particularly as mediated through the cinema, and further subverts masculine vision by representing gender as a masquerade.
