    Article CASTE: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion Vol. 1, No. 2, pp. 31–50 brandeis.edu/j-caste October 2020 ISSN 2639-4928 DOI: 10.26812/caste.v1i2.199 Leisure, Festival, Revolution: Ambedkarite Productions of Space Thomas Crowley1 Abstract This article analyzes the town of Mahad in the state of Maharashtra, using it as a lens to examine protests and commemorations that are inseparable from Ambedkarite and Neo-Buddhist transformations of space. A key site of anti-caste struggle, Mahad witnessed two major protests led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in 1927: the claiming of water from Chavdar Tale, a tank located in a upper caste neighbourhood; and the burning of the Manusmriti. These events are commemorated every year with large-scale festivities. The article analyzes the ways that these protests and festivities have worked to produce a distinctly Ambedkarite space, one that is radically counterposed to hierarchical, Brahminical productions of space. Exploring the writings of Ambedkar and more recent Ambedkarite scholars, and putting these texts into dialogue with the spatial theories of Henri Lefebvre, the article contributes to a growing international literature on the spatiality of caste. The Navayana Buddhism pioneered by Ambedkar has been analyzed in terms of its ideology, its pragmatism, and its politics, but rarely in terms of its spatiality. Drawing on Lefebvre helps flesh out this spatial analysis while a serious engagement with neo-Buddhist practices helps to expand, critique and globalize some of Lefebvre’s key claims. BY KRITIKA A & NIKITA AGARWAL The hearing on the petition Romila Thapar and Ors. vs. Union of India and Ors., known as the Bhima Koregaon case continued on September 19, 2018 at the Supreme Court heard by Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar. In the long arguments which lasted till 4 o’clock with a one hour lunch break, both sides—for the five plus five activists’ arrested on June 6th and August 28th in connection to Bhima Koregaon violence under FIR No. 04/2018 and the prosecution, the State of Maharashtra put forth their best arguments. Senior counsel for the activists Abhishek Manu Singhvi opened his argument by pointing towards the first FIR filed by Anita Salve, a Dalit woman and eye witness to the violence unleashed by right wing extremist groups: “Anita Salve, an eye witness to the violence of 1st January 2018, lodged FIR 2/2018 at P.S. Pimpri on 2nd January 2018, stating that violence was unleashed by a mob armed with swords, rods etc. against the Dalits and specifically names Sambhaji Bhide, Chief of Shivajinagar Pratishthan and Milind Ekbote, Chief of Hindu Janjagaran Samiti, as the perpetrators and conspirators of the attack.” He emphasised that a belated FIR was filed by Tushar Damgude, who is an Intervenor before this Court, on January 8th, eight days after the incident and seven days after the first FIR. This FIR is what is known as FIR 4/ 2018 and the raids and arrests of the activists’ have taken place under this FIR.

Schoenhaus: Indian Dalits and <i>Hindutva</i> Strategies INDIAN DALITS AND HINDUTVA STRATEGIES Indian Dalits and Hindutva Strategies Seth Schoenhaus The Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, is a right-wing nationalist political party charged by its parent organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS), to spread its ideology of Hindutva (Hindu nationalism) through the political process.1 In doing this, the BJP has gained national prominence, as seen most recently in its resounding 2014 victory in which Narendra Modi shot to power as Prime Minister of India.2 However, the party has made itself into the stalwart political arm of In- dia’s burgeoning middle class: conservative, fairly wealthy voters who tend to see themselves as the backbone of India’s emerging global might and economic prow- ess.3 In order to increase its share of power, the BJP and other Hindutva organiza- tions have increasingly realized the need to reach out to Scheduled Caste voters, specifically Dalits: those who have largely existed at the bottom of the Indian caste system, below even those considered “untouchable.”4 Dalits often find themselves on the fringe of acceptable Indian society due to their historically low caste posi- tion, so their receptiveness to Hindutva politics is quite curious.

    Statement from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Students, Alumni and Faculty members We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty, staff and other members of the TISS community stand with Mahesh Raut and the four other activists who have been arrested unfairly and demand for their immediate and unconditional release. On the morning of June 6th, 2018, the Pune Police investigating the Bhima Koregaon case arrested Mr. Mahesh Raut. Mahesh is an alumni of TISS, a former fellow at the prestigious Prime Minister’s Rural Development Programme (PMRD) and an anti-displacement activist working with gram sabhas on implementation of laws like PESA (Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas) and FRA (Forest Rights Act). He was arrested from Nagpur, where he had been staying for his ongoing medical treatment. On the same day, the premises of Mr. Sudhir Dhawale, Dalit activist and editor of Marathi magazine Vidrohi, Professor Shoma Sen, Head of the English literature department at Nagpur University, Advocate Surendra Gadling, general secretary of Indian Association of People’s Lawyers (IAPL), and Mr. Rona Wilson, secretary of the Committee for Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) were raided and they were arrested too. Even as the police informed that they were being picked up in connection to the Bhima Koregaon case, the media started releasing news about them being ‘top urban Maoist operatives’. Subsequently we were also informed, again by the media, that they had been apprehended as a money trail between banned Maoist organisations and that had been discovered, in connection to funding Bhima Koregaon and the Dalit -Bahujan- Maratha- Muslim protests that ensued.
