ANALYSIS OF THE KARYOTYPES IN YUCCA, A GA VE AND THE RELATED GENERA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PHYLOGENETIC SIGNIFICANCEI~ Dyuhei SATo Divisionof Genetics, Bot. Inst. Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University McKelvey and Sax (2933) have called attention to the existence of taxonomic and cytological similarities of the genera Yucca, Hesperoyucca, Gleistvucca,Hesperoaloe and Samuela of the Liliaceae with the genera Agave and Fourcroya which belong to a related family, Amaryllidaceae. Wh.itaker (1934) also has reported that Polianhes and Fourcroya have exactly the same chromosome constitution as the Yucca-Abave karyotype (5 long and 25 short chromosomes) (Figs. 1, 2). These observations when considered in respect to taxonomic resemblances, seem to indicate that the genera mentioned above are more closely related than it is shown by their classifica- tion into distinct families. Whitaker also has remarked that Dasylirion (2n=38) and ATolina(2n=36) in Yucceae and Doryanthes (2n=36) in Agavoideae are of different karyotypes from the Yucca-Agave type. In the present work an analysis of the karyotypes in Liliaceous plants has been attempted and several karyotypes have been found in Scilloideae. Eucornis and Carassia have been selected with the purpose of discovering a possible connecting link between these genera and the Yucca-Agave group. In the present paper an analysis of the karyotypes of the following species is given. This underutilized bulb crop can be grown an marketed alongside other spring flowering bulbT crops such as daffodils, hyacinths and tulips. Several years ago Golden State Bulb Growers intro- duced Scilla peruviana ‘Caribbean Jewels Sapphire Blue’ to the industry. Sapphire Blue produces large striking blue conical-shaped flowers atop slim, lance-shaped leaves in mid to late spring. The flower stalks produce 50 to 100 deep blue, starry blossoms. These unique flowers have an impressively long bloom time. In the landscape, mature plantings of Sapphire Blue grow to 18 to 22 inches in height. They should be grown in locations with full sun to light shade. In the northern United States, scilla are can be grown and marketed as potted plants or in combination containers, but they can be sold as perennials in USDA Hardiness Zones 7 to 10. They are relatively cold hardy and can tolerate light frosts down to 28° F without experiencing plant damage. Perennial growers should consider adding scilla to their tender perennial programs to supplement their current offerings with this novelty plant. Additionally, ‘Caribbean Jewels Sapphire Blue’ is relatively easy to produce, has few cultural problems and can be grown with cool tem- peratures. These attributes, along with its unique flowers, make scilla a great addition to any perennial program. -

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Master Site Plan PHASING AND IMPLEMENTATION he following pages outline phasing recommendations for the KruckebergT Botanic Garden that seem desirable to address the needs, vision, and requirements of a private garden’s evolution into the publc domain. With the transfer of this property from a private residence to a commercial public entity, new sets of codes, restrictions, and opportunities come into play. These deal with public safety, health, and well-being and ensure that equal opportunities are afforded to all. Within a limited budget, Phase 1 responds to these immediate needs by providing on-site public parking to reduce impacts to the surrounding residential community, adding much needed public restrooms, and creating a permanent and separate service access road and staff parking area. Phase 2 focuses on siting an interpretive switchback boardwalk trail that connects the upper and lower gardens in an aesthetic ADA-compliant manner. It is also envi- sioned that an ADA-compliant loop path would be routed through the lower garden. While it would be optimal to build the environmental learning center in Phase 2, it is recognized that lack of funding may require deferment to a later phase. Further development of future phases depends on many factors, most importantly securing funding and the commitment of the City, Foundation, and public to sup- port and encourage new work to proceed. In the end, this alone will determine how quickly Garden projects are completed and the Garden vision, as outlined in this report, is realized. This is a modest plan as represented by the development costs associated with each phase in 2010 dollars. -

[email protected] Abstract: The present study was carried out during 2010 to 2011 to determine the important plants of in Jarjar oma in Al- Jabal Al- Akhdar-Libya, which includes about 179 species belonging to 51 families and 144 genera. They are represented by 75 perennial, 101 annual and 3 biennial species. Most characteristic families are Asteraceae containing 28 species, the dominance of Asteraceae indicates the range deterioration and dominance of unpalatable species. Fabaceae represented by 22 species, Poaceae including 18 species, Asparagaceae by 7 species, Brassicaceae by 6 species, Caryophyllaceae by 6 species, Euphorbiaceae by 6 species saline and rocky. Apiaceae, Lamiaceae and Polygonaceae including 5 species. Noticed that 56.2 % of species was annuals and 42.1 % was perennials and 1.7 % was biennials. Whereas autumn and summer increase perennials to reach 100 % more than spring and winter wherein increase annuals species to attain 55 %, to display disappear biennial in autumn and summer seasons in all habitat except rocky habitat in autumn. Out of the surveyed, Kinds of Forbs gave 109 species followed shrubs by 38 species, Grass 26 species, Trees 6 species. Of the most dominant species was broad-leaved (Forbs) plant species found in the region. According to palatability 107 species were palatable and 72 species were unpalatable. For annuals, 61 species were palatable and 40 species were unpalatable, while perennial, 44 species were palatable and 31 species were unpalatable. -

Southern Plant Lists Southern Garden History Society A Joint Project With The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation September 2000 1 INTRODUCTION Plants are the major component of any garden, and it is paramount to understanding the history of gardens and gardening to know the history of plants. For those interested in the garden history of the American south, the provenance of plants in our gardens is a continuing challenge. A number of years ago the Southern Garden History Society set out to create a ‘southern plant list’ featuring the dates of introduction of plants into horticulture in the South. This proved to be a daunting task, as the date of introduction of a plant into gardens along the eastern seaboard of the Middle Atlantic States was different than the date of introduction along the Gulf Coast, or the Southern Highlands. To complicate maters, a plant native to the Mississippi River valley might be brought in to a New Orleans gardens many years before it found its way into a Virginia garden. A more logical project seemed to be to assemble a broad array plant lists, with lists from each geographic region and across the spectrum of time. The project’s purpose is to bring together in one place a base of information, a data base, if you will, that will allow those interested in old gardens to determine the plants available and popular in the different regions at certain times. This manual is the fruition of a joint undertaking between the Southern Garden History Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In choosing lists to be included, I have been rather ruthless in expecting that the lists be specific to a place and a time. -

Bulbous plants are a subsection of herbaceous as they have significant storage organs near to the ground which remain over the plant’s dormant period; providing energy and allowing for vigourous growth the following year. Due to this adaptation, bulbous plants are often (but not always) fast growing and may be earlier flowering than their herbaceous relatives. Many bulbous plants are monocotyledonous, meaning they Potato Tuber have one leaf sprout (cotyledon), such as onions. A few bulbous plants are dicotyledonous such as species in the Oxalidaceae and Ranunculaceae. It is important to note that, while all significant, subterranean storage organs are known as ‘bulbs’ in horticulture, botanists distinguish true bulbs from rhizomes, corms and tubers. True bulbs, with the exception of some Oxalis, are exclusively found in the monocots whereas Tubers and Corms tend to be Eudicots such as Dahlias and Anemones respectively. Rhizomes are found throughout many taxa. Planting with Bulbs – Rhizome, Corm or Tuber – Does it matter? Bulbous Plants can be some of the easiest to grow as they require little attention once they’re established and will often spread over a large areas such as bluebells or grape hyacinths. -

Orchard Gro-Sheet #0 “Deer Resistant” Plant Guide Deer, like all animals, have certain food preferences and dislikes. Home gardeners living near deer habitat can often take advantage of this fact by using deer- resistant plants for ornamental planting. The use of deer-resistant plants to minimize damage from browsing has a number of advantages for the home gardener. Perhaps the principal advantages over the more conventional methods of deer-damage control are those of economy and beauty. High deer fences are unsightly and expensive, and noise or odor repellants are often out of place on home grounds. But, deer-resistant plants can be pleasing to the eye and to the pocket book: they provide their own protec- tion and when properly chosen and landscaped, produce excellent results for the home gardener. Resistance of the plant to deer is related to the availability of other food. If there is an adequate supply of natural browse in the deer’s usual feeding ground, the gardener’s ornamental plantings may be largely untouched; if natural food supplies are low, there will be an increased browsing in domestic gardens; if there is an extreme shortage of natural food, few if any plant species are totally resistant to deer. A heavy deer population also increases competition for food, with the result that plants relatively unpalatable in an area where deer are not numerous will be readily browsed in an area where deer abound. Various factors can make a plant resistant to deer. Many of the most resistant plants (such as Oleander) are poisonous, some at all times and others only at certain stages of growth.
