Taste-Test Proposal Project for Students in High School Lesson 1
Taste-Test Proposal Project for Students in High School Lesson 1 Title: Food systems over time – Feeding people throughout history Objective: Students will begin to explore the method of interdisciplinary thinking through the concept map activity and have an initial baseline idea of how different topic areas are related to their hydroponics system. Students will be able to explain what a food system is and what factors and people are involved. They will also be able to map out changes in agriculture and food systems over the course of history and pick various human health and environmental impacts that were present if different food systems over time. Topics: History, Agriculture Grade Level: 9th-12th Grade Time: 84 minutes External Materials Needed: chalkboard/wipe board, projector, computer, writing utensils, large sheets of paper Teaching Tips: Apart from meeting the lesson objectives, this lesson aims to introduce students to the complexity of food systems and how as the world changes and develops, so do our food systems. It is important for the students to begin with this background knowledge of food systems because it sets up a platform for their project – as technology continues to advances and our population continues to grow, new methods of agriculture may need to be explored to feed over 7 billion people while protecting the integrity of our environment. The introduction should be brief as it is simply introducing the overall project to the students. The concept mapping activity is necessary for teachers interested in tracking students’ abilities to think in an interdisciplinary manner. This activity is correlated with the final presentation at the end of the series. -

Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. After the Towers: the Destruction of Public Housing and the Remaking
After the Towers: The Destruction of Public Housing and the Remaking of Chicago by Andrea Field A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved March 2017 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Philip Vandermeer, Chair Deirdre Pfeiffer Victoria Thompson ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2017 ©2017 Andrea Field All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the history of Cabrini-Green through the lens of placemaking. Cabrini-Green was one of the nation's most notorious public housing developments, known for sensational murders of police officers and children, and broadcast to the nation as a place to be avoided. Understanding Cabrini-Green as a place also requires appreciation for how residents created and defended their community. These two visions—Cabrini-Green as a primary example of a failed public housing program and architecture and Cabrini-Green as a place people called home—clashed throughout the site's history, but came into focus with its planned demolition in the Chicago Housing Authority's Plan for Transformation. Demolition and reconstruction of Cabrini-Green was supposed to create a model for public housing renewal in Chicago. But residents feared that this was simply an effort to remove them from valuable land on Chicago's Near North Side and deprive them of new neighborhood improvements. The imminent destruction of the CHA’s high-rises uncovered desires to commemorate the public housing developments like Cabrini-Green and the people who lived there through a variety of public history and public art projects. This dissertation explores place from multiple perspectives including architecture, city planning, neighborhood development, and public and oral history. -
