And to each one of the 50 older adults that trusted in me and told me their stories, especially to Pascual and Susanita. I am so happy for learning so much from them, including a lot of things that goes far beyond the academic learning. This research is also dedicated to the memory of the late Adriana Iturriaga, a respondent who died while I was conducting the second phase of this research. I also want to dedicate this dissertation to both of my grandmothers: Jana and Yolanda, for showing me how different old age can be lived. In addition, I want to thank my parents and sister, for all their loving support during these five years living so away from them, and their extra support while I was conducting research in my hometown, Curicó. Thanks mom and dad for the rides, and your guidance when I was trying to do as much work as possible during three months. Also, thanks to my sister, Isidora, who despite being 14 years old back then, helped me to systematize the quantitative data. Finally, infinite thanks to my fiancé Felipe, for his 4 unconditional support during these five years of graduate school, and life away from our friends and family. Tal es el caso de Bajo otros cielos, de 2011, en la que usa percusiones altiplánicas, de …y allá andará, según se dice…, de 2005, para pinkillos, tarkas, sikus, dos wankaras y un par de claves, y de Magma V, de 1977, que contempla cuatro quenas. Pero la postura ética de la compositora va más allá de la reivindicación cultural de lo americano. Además ella crea simpatías en el auditorio, ya que es conocido su repudio a las dictaduras militares que han padecido nuestros países con la participación indisimulada del poderoso vecino del norte. Un buen ejemplo de esta postura ética de la compositora es …y allá andará, según se dice…, en que alude a Ernesto “Che” Guevara, la que escribió para la Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos. El compositor alemán Thomas Beimel encabeza su artículo en el libro que comentamos con la siguiente cita de G. Paraskevaídis: “…ser compositor o intérprete es una manera de estar en el mundo, es hacer preguntas y buscar respuestas, es tratar de existir y resistir, es dudar y cuestionar. También es un modo de ejercer el derecho a la libertad y, por ende, un acto de rebeldía”. De lo antedicho se desprende que son muchas las razones por las cuales la música de Graciela Paraskevaídis despierta interés en el auditor, no solo en el intérprete, compositor o musicólogo, sino, también, en el público en general. Sus búsquedas y hallazgos en lo técnico-musical, en lo estético, o en lo político-social, siempre con una huella americana, nos convocan a todos.
