Very rare Latin edition, translated from a Greek manuscript at the Autolycus was a Greek mathematician and astronomer, who probably Giulio Alessandrini (or Julius Alexandrinus de Neustein) (1506–1590) was an Italian physician and author Vatican library, of Autolycus’ work on the rising and setting of the fixed flourished in the second half of the 4th century B.C., since he is said to of Trento who studied philosophy and medicine at the University of Padua, then mathematical science, stars. -

Early Theatre 15.1 (2012) Virginia Scott Conniving Women and Superannuated Coquettes: Travestis and Caractères in the Early Modern French Theatre In his 1651 Roman comique that depicts the adventures of an itinerant theat- rical troupe in the French provinces, Paul Scarron describes a conventional representation of older female characters in French comedy: ‘Au temps qu’on était réduit aux pièces de Hardy, il [La Rancune] jouait en fausset et, sous les masques, les roles de nourrice’ [In the period when troupes were reduced to the plays of Hardy, he played in falsetto, wearing a mask, the roles of the nurse].1 The nourrice was a character type from Roman and Italian Renais- sance comedy, often an entremetteuse or go-between as well as a confidant. Juliet’s Nurse in Romeo and Juliet, although she participates in a story that ends tragically, is an essentially comic character and a familiar example from the English repertory. La Rancune, an actor of the second rank, also played confidents, ambas- sadors, kidnappers, and assassins. This mixed emploi — confidents et nour- rices — was not an unusual line of business for an actor in the early years of the seventeenth century. A comparable emploi at the end of that century would be known as confidentes et caractères. The difference is that the former was an emploi for men while the latter was for women. Female character roles became more and more important in the last decades of the seventeenth century, when comedy dominated the Paris repertory and the bourgeoisie dominated the Paris theatre audience. When the professional theatre was established in Paris in the 1630s, no women specialized in comic charac- ter roles; by the end of that century, the troupe of the Comédie-Française included Mlles Desbrosses, Godefroy, Champvallon, and Du Rieu in the emploi of caractères. -

Achievements of Catholic Scientists Most of the Catholic Scientists listed below lived in 17th through 19th centuries. Many earlier scientists, including scholars associated with establishing the Scientific Method, and also those who played a leading role in the field of Astronomy, are listed elsewhere. Up until the Protestant Revolution scientific research in Europe occurred mostly within monasteries, Universities, and institutions of the Catholic Church. During this time the majority of scholars were priests or religious. From the 16th century on the participation of layman in science increased in both Catholic and Protestant countries. In the centuries following the Protestant Revolt, many institutions dedicated to Scientific research came under the control of the Jesuit order and from that time on, the Jesuits dominated scientific research in most Catholic countries. A longer list of both Lay Catholic and Catholic Cleric Scientists can be found on Wikipedia. Mathematical Philosophers Pope Sylvester II Prolific French scholar, also known as Gerbert of Aurillac. Greatest (c. 946–1003) scholar of his age. Promoted Arabic knowledge of arithmetic, mathematics, and astronomy and introduced Arabic (decimal) numbers into Europe. He inspired learning in Medieval France especially at monastery schools. Leonardo Fibonacci Layman mathematical scholar who popularized Hindu-Arabic numerals (c.1170–c.1250) in Europe and discovered the Fibonacci sequence. Rene Descartes French philosopher, mathematician and scientist. Philosophical works (1596–1650) explore rationalism and skepticism, and are foundational to modern western philosophy. Descartes also developed the Cartesian co-ordinate system and wrote on analytic geometry. Pierre de Fermat Number theorist who contributed to the early development of calculus. -

Fine, clean copy, presented by Addison’s widow to Addison’s friend Henry Lonsdale (1816-76), with a unique binding with the gilt-stamped ornament on the front cover reading “Presented by Mrs. Addison,” instead of the usual title lettering, and inscription on the front free endpaper, presumably in the hand of Mrs. Addison, reading: “To Dr. Lonsdale one of the Author’s best & kind friends.” A very fine copy, preserved in a custom leather box. First edition, the only known presentation copy, presented by Addison’s widow to Addison’s friend Henry Lonsdale (1816-76), with a unique binding with the gilt-stamped ornament on the front cover reading “Presented by Mrs. Addison,” instead of the usual title lettering, and inscription on the front free endpaper, presumably in the hand of Mrs. Addison, reading: “To Dr. Lonsdale one of the Author’s best & kind friends.” Addison’s monograph inaugurated the study of diseases of the ductless glands and the disturbances in chemical equilibrium known as pluriglandular syndromes; it also marks the beginning of modern ADDISON, Thomas. -

There is obviously no doubt how smoothly Bayle's thought fused with that part of rationa- lism which became identical with irreligiosity. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in The Holy Family of 1845 depicted Bayle as an author who not only discredited the metaphysics of the seventeenth century, but all metaphysics, and as one who became the historiographer of metaphysics in order to write the history of its death. -

JEMH 10,1-2_2029_39-59 5/12/06 1:48 PM Page 39 READING TRAVELS IN THE CULTURE OF CURIOSITY: THÉVENOT’S COLLECTION OF VOYAGES NICHOLAS DEW McGill University Abstract This article explores the circulation and use of travel writings within the seventeenth- century “culture of curiosity”, focusing on a figure at the heart of this milieu, Melchisédech Thévenot (? 1622-1692), and his edited Relations de divers voyages curieux (1663-1672). The Thévenot case reveals the importance of travel writing for the scholarly community in a period when the modern boundaries between disciplines were not yet formed, and when the nature of geographical knowledge was undergoing radical change. The col- lection, discussion and publication of the travel collection are shown to be part of the program of Thévenot’s experimental “assembly” to investigate the “arts”. John Locke kept abreast of the scholarly news from France through the regular correspondence of Nicolas Toinard, an antiquarian and Biblical scholar from Orléans. In the summer of 1680, a mutual friend added an enquiry of his own. This friend was Melchisédech Thévenot (c. 1622- 1692), whom Locke had met during his years in France (1675-79). Thévenot explained that, while reading Purchas his Pilgrimes, he had found a reference to some papers of Richard Hakluyt’s that had not been printed; Purchas seemed to imply that these texts deserved to be made public, and Thévenot asked Locke to make enquiries as to where these manuscripts might be.
