Teksten en correspondentie zijn in 1910 niet veel te bespeu- ren. Maar voor de pastoor van Ingooigem draaide de carrousel van voordrachten onverstoorbaar verder. Een daarvan leidde in dat jaar tot een kortsluiting met een deel van de vrijzinnigen. In het kader van de Brusselse Wereldtentoonstelling werd een reeks voordrachten geprogrammeerd, net zoals in Luik in 1905. Hugo Verriest kreeg de uitnodiging om in aanwezigheid van koning Albert i en koningin Elisabeth een toespraak te houden over de betekenis van de Vlaamse letterkunde. Via welke kanalen de uitnodiging is verstuurd, valt niet meer te achterhalen, maar het is meer dan plausibel dat de Koninklijke Academie en de Vereeniging van Vlaamsche Letterkundigen (vvl) een adviserende rol gespeeld hebben. Bovendien werden de Franstalige letterkundigen voorgesteld door Emile Verhaeren.210 De ideologische verdeelsleutel had gewerkt. De katholieke Vlaamse priester Hugo Verriest kon dus als tweede spreken. Uit de recente monumentale biografie van Paul Servaes, gewijd aan Emile Verhaeren, valt een en ander op te maken aangaande deze aangelegenheid. Deze feestelijke bijeenkomst was het gevolg van de profileringsdrang van Edmond Picard, die ijverde voor een officiële erkenning van een (Franstalige) schrijversvereniging, waarin Emile Verhaeren een hoofdrol zou spelen, maar ook van de groeiende vriendschappelijke 210. This essay offers an analysis of the aesthetical and political implications of the seemingly random use of names of figures from Belgian collaborationist history in the novel Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Flemish authors Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs. More specifically, it investigates the framing of the memory of World War II in Belgium by means of a satirical fantasy story that fuses elements from the dystopian imagination, science fiction, Gothic horror, and popular culture. Drenched in satire, hyperbole, absurdities, coarse humor, and blatant clichés, the novel eschews historiographical relevance and deliberately ignores the sensibilities that govern public and political discourses about this war past. By doing so, so I argue, it offers a provocative engagement with established practices in both Belgian and Flemish cultural memory, implementing what I will call a ‘politics of commemorative irreverence’. A Kingdom Saved by the Sea Guido Demerre Nieuwpoort, Belgium [email protected] The Belgian Army had been fighting a defensive war since the German invasion of Belgium on 4 August 1914. In quick succession the fortified position of Liège fell, and the Belgians withdrew to the outer fortifications of Antwerp. As commander in chief of the armed forces, Belgium’s King Albert intended to maintain his nation’s independence during this essentially Franco-Prussian conflict. Bound by a pledge of neutrality, he aimed to expell the Germans without favouring the French; he knew to fear post-war French dominance as much as German victory. Although Article VII of the Treaty of London (1839) promised European aid to protect Belgian neutrality, the king did not know when help would arrive, as the Anglo-French forces had troubles of their own in northern France. To show his support, the king launched 2 sorties from Antwerp,1 which succeeded in diverting 60,000 German soldiers destined for France. Despite the valiant efforts of little Belgium, foreign military assistance was not forthcoming. First Lord of the Admiralty Winston S. Churchill suggested that the Dutch hold the River Scheldt open to allow supplies to reach Antwerp, but the Dutch insisted on maintaining their neutrality. The British, with much more at stake in the defence of Antwerp, began sending guns and ammunition. Unfortunately, German artillery bombardments began in late September. Just as at Liège and Namur, Antwerp’s defences were no match for German guns. The Belgian clearance of the suburbs looked even worse than the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake. -

While amateur historians can often summarize the “Rape of Belgium” and cite nationalism as a cause of the war, few people are aware of the substantial contributions of the Belgian people to the war effort and their significance, especially in the historical context of Belgian nationalism. Relatively few works have been written about the underground press in Belgium during the war, and even fewer of those works are scholarly. The Belgian underground press attempted to unite the country's two major national identities, Flemings and Walloons, using the German occupation as the catalyst to do so. Belgian nationalists were able to momentarily unite the Belgian people to resist their German occupiers by publishing pro-Belgian newspapers and articles. They relied on three pillars of identity—Catholic heritage, loyalty to the Belgian Crown, and anti-German sentiment. While this expansion of Belgian identity dissipated to an extent after WWI, the efforts of the clandestine press still serve as an important framework for the development of national identity today. By examining how the clandestine press convinced members of two separate nations, Flanders and Wallonia, to re-imagine their community to the nation of Belgium, historians can analyze the successful expansion of a nation in a war-time context. -

Due to its location at the Ro- mance-Germanic language border, it hosts and officially recognizes different cultural communities divided by language. The Dutch-speaking community or Flanders in the north and the French-speaking community or Wallonia in the south are the two main communities. A small German-speaking community is located on the German border. The region of Brussels is Dutch–French bilingual. Furthermore, numerous migration flows from southern Europe, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Asia have had a strong impact on—and still are complexifying—social customs, local cultures, and cultural production, both in the main- stream and nonmainstream. Music reflects such complexity by representing Belgium’s diverse sociocultural geography, by conveying the images and symbols of the different traditions, languages, and ideas present in the country. -

1 Left or Right “No One Slept throughout the Night” Before the August 1914 start of World War I, the Belgian village of Virton was a thriving administrative and commercial center in Luxembourg Province. A Walloon, or French-speaking, municipality of 3,500 residents, Virton was known for its hilly streets, massive St. Lawrence’s Catholic Church, and remnants of medieval walls. Located just south of the better-known Ardennes region and less than five miles north of the French border, Virton was the principal town of the small Belgian region known as Gaume, which boasted a warmer microclimate than those around it. Gently rolling green hills and lush pockets of forest were peaceful dividers between picturesque ancient towns and villages. When the war came, it did not pass lightly over Virton and the surrounding vil- lages. During the invasion, more than 200 men, women, and children were dragged from their homes and executed in one of the worst massacres of the time. Many houses were partially or completely destroyed. Across Belgium the Germans out- lawed all movement outside a person’s neighborhood without a properly autho- rized Passierschein (safe conduct pass). A constant barrage of affiches commanded Belgians in all matters of life. These placards came from either the local German commander or from Belgium’s German governor general, Baron von Bissing. Any disobedience was met with harsh fines and sometimes imprisonment. Nearly two and a half years of occupation had passed when the stories of the “slave raids” crept into Virton long before the German affiche was posted. -
