BALLISTIC IMPACT CRATER MODELLING USING UAV AND STRUCTURE FROM MOTION TECHNOLOGY 2012 Te Maari Volcanic Eruptions, New Zealand A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters in Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) At The University of Canterbury By Ravitej Pitchika 2017 Abstract New Zealand has a strong historical background of producing volcanic eruptions and earthquakes due to its geographical setting. The deformation caused by the collision of Australian and Pacific plates has given rise to New Zealand’s volcanism. Most of NZ’s volcanism has occurred in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) in the last 1.6 million years. On 6th August 2012, Upper Te Maari volcanic eruptions occurred on the north- eastern flanks of Tongariro volcano complex, in TVZ region producing a hazard from volcanic ballistic projectiles. The vulnerability of people walking along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing to ballistic impacts was identified by (Fitzgerald, 2014) and the hazard was calculated by remote and field mapping of ballistic craters. This project examines the effectiveness and accuracy of mapping a volcanic crater field near Tongariro, using a Draganfly X4P un-manned aerial vehicle (UAV). The UAV is flown at different elevations above the ground surface to capture the two- dimensional ground images. The UAV imagery datasets and ground truthing survey points are incorporated to Agisoft Photoscan Pro software to build a three- dimensional elevation model, using Structure from motion (SfM) and photogrammetry technology. The use of UAV’s and SfM to study geohazards is a new concept which could prove an alternative to the more expensive Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveys.

  • Shock-Metamorphosed Zircon in Terrestrial Impact Craters
Meteoritics & Planetary Science 41, Nr 3, 433–454 (2006) Abstract available online at http://meteoritics.org Shock-metamorphosed zircon in terrestrial impact craters A. WITTMANN*, T. KENKMANN, R. E-mail: [email protected] (Received 06 June 2005; revision accepted 11 October 2005) Abstract–To ascertain the progressive stages of shock metamorphism of zircon, samples from three well-studied impact craters were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy in thin section and grain separates. These samples are comprised of well-preserved, rapidly quenched impactites from the Ries crater, Germany, strongly annealed impactites from the Popigai crater, Siberia, and altered, variably quenched impactites from the Chicxulub crater, Mexico. The natural samples were compared with samples of experimentally shock-metamorphosed zircon. Below 20 GPa, zircon exhibits no distinct shock features. Above 20 GPa, optically resolvable planar microstructures occur together with the high-pressure polymorph reidite, which was only retained in the Ries samples. Decomposition of zircon to ZrO2 only occurs in shock stage IV melt fragments that were rapidly quenched. This is not only a result of post-shock temperatures in excess of ∼1700 °C but could also be shock pressure–induced, which is indicated by possible relics of a high-pressure polymorph of ZrO2. However, ZrO2 was found to revert to zircon with a granular texture during devitrification of impact melts. Other granular textures represent recrystallized amorphous ZrSiO4 and reidite that reverted to zircon.

  • Science Concept 3: Key Planetary
Science Concept 6: The Moon is an Accessible Laboratory for Studying the Impact Process on Planetary Scales Science Concept 6: The Moon is an accessible laboratory for studying the impact process on planetary scales Science Goals: a. Characterize the existence and extent of melt sheet differentiation. b. Determine the structure of multi-ring impact basins. c. Quantify the effects of planetary characteristics (composition, density, impact velocities) on crater formation and morphology. d. Measure the extent of lateral and vertical mixing of local and ejecta material. INTRODUCTION Impact cratering is a fundamental geological process which is ubiquitous throughout the Solar System. Impacts have been linked with the formation of bodies (e.g. the Moon; Hartmann and Davis, 1975), terrestrial mass extinctions (e.g. the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary extinction; Alvarez et al., 1980), and even proposed as a transfer mechanism for life between planetary bodies (Chyba et al., 1994). However, the importance of impacts and impact cratering has only been realized within the last 50 or so years. Here we briefly introduce the topic of impact cratering. The main crater types and their features are outlined as well as their formation mechanisms. Scaling laws, which attempt to link impacts at a variety of scales, are also introduced. Finally, we note the lack of extraterrestrial crater samples and how Science Concept 6 addresses this. Crater Types There are three distinct crater types: simple craters, complex craters, and multi-ring basins (Fig. 6.1). The type of crater produced in an impact is dependent upon the size, density, and speed of the impactor, as well as the strength and gravitational field of the target.
