Es esta una edición conmemorativa en la que queremos celebrar los procesos de resistencia, de diálogo entre diferentes, y de intercambio de ideas y saberes que hacen parte de la compleja realidad de la vida en la frontera. Es en esa realidad en la que esta revista es y ha sido imaginada, pensada y elaborada semestre a semestre, durante cincuenta números, por los estudiantes del programa de Escritura Creativa de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso. Además de las secciones habituales de poesía y narrativa, este número cuenta con el dossier Desdibujar el borde, compuesto por textos en español e inglés de autores que han indagado desde diferentes perspectivas formales y temáticas lo que significa estar en la frontera, habitar las zonas geográficas, literarias, corporales, en las que los límites se tornan difusos o inexistentes. Cerramos el número con la reedición de una entrevista hecha por Allan Vorda al escritor Kazuo Ishiguro, Premio Nobel de Literatura (2017). I roll and roll, each day I roll, and each afternoon I curl in the corner with my bowl filled of this grain. Swollen and nourished, strangers approach. Do they see these hands? I came here to be me, but instead my nose is filled with a salty stench. Day in and day out this pink flesh stains my own. Hours pass and so do faces, but none look into my eyes. Do they see these hands? oetry These hands work for a privilege p they will never see, nor touch. I am digested such as what I produce is. Stuck in this kennel, I am able to see the ones who never see me. Their faces down and plates full, they only ever see these hands. A N Y N R A IVERS SARAH HUIZAR North American writer and graphic designer. She seeks to understand the world around her, relaying such observations through her writing, and finds value in understanding perspectives other than her own, allowing her to create work with an honest and genuine approach. Department of Art and Art History) Heritage Festival: Carnival of Culture, Thesis directed by Professor Melanie Yazzie Within my thesis, I sought to expand an environment established within my previous work in order to explore my own identity and culture. The work I have created for this thesis is a series of eight drawings on paper, each occupying the setting of the annual Nederland Heritage Festival in my hometown of Nederland, Texas. Within the text, I address how the medium of drawing is a tool for me to take control of my anxiety and organize my thoughts. The drawings themselves are presented as vignettes that all take place within the same reality; each one draws upon imagery from my wide array of influences and interests. In this text, I address the characteristics that people attribute to categories like industry, gender, ethnicity, religion, and mental illness in order to gain a better understanding of the constructed culture that I associate with where I grew up. I seek to communicate personal narratives using the language of storytelling.
