Chaco Culture National Historical Park, General Management Plan CHACO CULTURE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK NEW MEXICO MARCH 2012 National Park Service United States Department of the Interior GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN AMENDMENT / ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN AMENDMENT / ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Chaco Culture National Historical Park San Juan and McKinley Counties, New Mexico Chaco Culture National Historical Park is in northwestern New Mexico, about 150 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Chaco Culture National Historical Park was first established as a national monument by Presidential Proclamation in 1907 and was designated as a national historical park in 1980. The park consists of 33,974 acres. The park has an approved general management plan that was completed in 1984. The 1984 plan provides sufficient direction for park management with the exception of one area: visitor use management. Therefore, the National Park Service is amending the current general management plan to provide specific guidance and direction on this topic. This document describes four alternatives for managing visitor use in Chaco Culture National Historical Park for the next 15 to 20 years, and the impacts on the environment and cultural resources of implementing each alternative. The no-action alternative describes continuation of existing management and serves as a basis of comparison for the action alternatives. The action alternatives describe what park management could be like using different visitor use management techniques. Alternative 2 has been identified as the NPS preferred management approach. Under alternative 2, the National Park Service would implement a reservation system to manage groups and the campground, increase education and outreach programs, and institute a monitoring system that would allow the park to better track and manage resource and visitor experience conditions. If needed, based on monitoring results, a reservation system for individual access to the park may be implemented in the future. This document has been distributed to other agencies and interested organizations and individuals for their review and comment. The public comment period for this document will last for 30 days after this document is published and distributed. Please note that NPS practice is to make comments, including names and addresses of respondents, available for public review.     ASTRONOMY SURVIVAL NOTEBOOK Archaeoastronomy SESSION THREE: ARCHAEOASTRONOMY Archaeoastronomy is the practical use of astronomy as it applies to early cultures. It is of interest to astronomers and archaeologists because it encompasses the study of astronomical principles employed in ancient works of architecture (sometimes referred to as astroarchaeology) as well as the practice of astronomy and methods of observations among ancient peoples. ORIGINS OF ASTRONOMY AND ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATIONS The importance of astronomy to all ancient cultures stemmed from a practical need to establish a precise method for telling time, monitoring agricultural events, performing religious ceremonies, and regulating governmental activities. Early people discovered that the systematic progression of the seasons was matched to the rhythmic motions of the heavens, and that the sky was a far more accurate indicator of these cycles than making systematic observations of the weather. People realized that the movement of the sun across the sky could fix the day and its divisions, while the changing phases of the moon established the month ("moonth" in Old English). By observing the rising or setting of a specific star when near the sun (heliacal rising or setting), the year could be defined. And, because there were seven objects which moved against the starry background; five planets, the moon, and the sun, the popular notion of the week came to fore. Ancient cultures did not understand the true physical nature of these seven wanderers in the heavens, so it was only natural to deify them and to closely monitor their changing positions. Those individuals who became proficient in these tasks were able to wield enormous power with the populace and ruling infrastructures; so much so, that they were venerated as priests and allowed to exist as a separate, almost untouchable segment of society.

    Chaco Culture National Historical Park Chaco National Park Service Chaco Canyon Place Names CASA CHIQUITA - "smallhouse" in Spanish, so named because this ruin is small in comparison with the major pueblos in Chaco Canyon. The Spanish could be a translation of one of the Navajo names for this pueblo, kin yazhi hooghan, "litle house home," though it is also possible that the Spanish name preceded the Navajo. CASA RINCONADA - "canyon house" or "house where the canyons meet" in Spanish. Rlnconada is from rincon, meaning "corner," including the corner formed by inter-secting streets, fences, canyons, etc. In the Spanish of New Mexico and southern Colorado rinconada came to mean "dead end," "secluded place," or "box canyon." Casa Rinconada is located where a side canyon joins Chaco Canyon, thus the name. Among several Navajo names for this giant kiva are kin nahazbas, "circular house" and kits'ill tl'oo'yaa naalk'id, "many sherds ruins." CHACO - The precise history of chaco has not yet been traced; however, tsegai, "rock white or white rock," the Navajo name for Chacra mesa, is considered a likely source. The Navajo name was Hispanicized as Chaca, possibly passing through some Pueblo language to Spanish and was in turn Anglicized as Chaco or Chacra. CHETRO KETL - The meaning and origin of this name have been lost. There are at least two Navajo names for this ruin, tsebida't'ini'ani, "covered hole," referring to sealed concavities in the cliff behind the pueblo, and nastl'a kin, "house in the corner." FAJAOA BUTTE - This place name presents no particular difficulties.

The camp ground is approx. one hour from the nearest town. If staying in the campground, then tent or trailer. Campground reservations are needed. Recommended Equipment: Rain gear and camera. Cautions and Special Preparations: Let me know in advance if you are planning on going. It is recommended that we all stay at the Gallo Campground though not required. There are several hotels approximately an hour away. We can meet to discuss the upcoming day’s hikes. The below hikes are preliminary subject to available information available at the time. General Description: Wed Oct 16 Travel to Chaco Canyon. 4PM meet at Visitor Center. 4:30PM, hike Wijiji trail (3 miles RT). Thurs Oct 17 Hike Bisti / De Na-Zin Wilderness. Maybe go to Angel Peak scenic area (BLM) to see Kutz badlands overlook before returning to Chaco Canyon.
