IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL CRISIS (Mid 2009) Preliminary estimates indicate that the GDP growth rate is likely to be negative in 2009 -- down from a pre-crisis projection of 7.5%, through the slowdown of private activities in the industrial and service sectors, and the fiscal adjustment of public spending. Moreover the combination of the global financial crisis and the domestic political uncertainty has severely affected exports from Madagascar - about 80% of Malagasy exports are concentrated on the recession-hit EU and US markets.
