From the house you can witness dramatic sunrises and sunsets, the ebb and flow of the tide, endless summers and spectacular storms rolling across the water. There is a strong sense of community within the bay, but at a relaxed living pace, giving you the feeling you are on holiday all the time. I have thoroughly enjoyed renovating Kent House and bringing it back to its former elegant glory. It has been replastered and redecorated throughout and many period features either restored or original replacements have been sourced. I love the area with its terraces of beautiful Georgian properties and the history of these lovely homes. Kent House (formally No 1 Marine Terrace) was the first post office in Herne Bay, run by Maria Banks the Postmistress, who also listed her talents in 1840 as a Perfumer, Librarian, Stationer/Bookseller and Landlady. A true entrepreneur of her time! Herne Bay is a great place to live, it is very quiet but it is only a few minutes walk to a wide variety of bars and restaurants and the historic pier if you are looking for a little entertainment. We are close to the town centre with its pedestrian walkways, and numerous boutique shops, cafes and bars. You can enjoy the coastline, nature and wildlife on walking and cycling trails through the Reculver coastal park or visit some of the museums and art galleries along the cultural train. For watersport enthusiasts there are rowing and sailing clubs and golf aficionados can enjoy the nearby Whitstable and Seasalter or Chestfield golf clubs. There are some good primary schools including Herne Primary rated by Ofsted as Outstanding as well as a number of excellent private and grammar schools within half an hour’s drive in Canterbury as well as in Broadstairs and Sandwich, whilst commuters can catch the train from Herne Bay station to St Pancras, Victoria or Cannon Street direct.”* * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property. The first floor includes a beautiful sitting room with the focal point being an enormous oak fireplace and a pair of original glazed doors that give access to the wrought iron balcony which provides panoramic views round to the Isle of Sheppey and Southend beyond. On the same floor is a double bedroom that is currently being used as a cosy ‘snug’ whilst on the second floor you will find a very large family bathroom with a claw foot bath and separate double shower as well as the large master bedroom with its attractive brick fireplace and where you can sit in bed in the mornings and admire the boats sailing by. On the top floor you will find two double bedrooms with eaves storage, including the guest room with amazing views. However, a real surprise is the two rooms on the lower ground floor that have just been completely renovated and could be used for a number of requirements, particularly as it includes a shower room and a separate entrance door to the front garden. Whether you want a large study and a family room or even create a separate apartment for adult children, an elderly relative or as a holiday let, this space provides extremely useful and flexible additional accommodation.     EXCURSION TO SHEPPEY. 459 Heath, where there is a fine section in an outlier of Blackheath Beds. Towards the base the pebbles had become cemented by iron oxide into a hard conglomerate. Sand occurred below the pebble beds, and between the two was a thin band of allophane ; numerous specimens of this mineral were obtained. The amount of oxide of iron present gave the section a vivid red appearance. In spite of a long search, nothing beyond flint pebbles was found although on previous occasions a few quartzite pebbles of unknown derivation had been obtained by Dr. Hinde. Above the Blackheath Beds was to be seen a quantity of drift material, derived from Blackheath Beds and Thanet Sand. A short walk through a picturesque plantation brought the members to the edge of the dry Chalk valley, and the magnificent view there obtained was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A steep descent was made to the main road, and Upper Warlingham was again reached. Here the members enjoyed the hospitality of the Rev. T. T. Griffith, M.A., amidst the sylvan beauties which surround his home. Hearty votes of thanks to the Director and to the Rev. Mr. Griffith concluded an instructive excursion. REFERE~CES. To counteract falling beach levels, the Environment Agency and local authorities are increasingly resorting to “topping-up” the beaches with additional sand and shingle. Several terms are currently employed to refer to the artificial provision of extra beach material, but there is disagreement about their precise definition. For the purpose of this report, beach nourishment (or beach replenishment) is defined as the supply of material that has been dredged from the seabed or extracted from inland sand and gravel pits.
