Let’s Get Rid of Foam Pollution in Baltimore! Claire Wayner, Baltimore Beyond Plastic

Want to see Styrofoam pollution out of our waterways, , and streets? The time is now -- there is now a foam ban bill that has been introduced by Councilman John Bullock into City Hall. The bill would prohibit the use of primarily foam containers in all food sale locations. Foam is a pervasive pollutant and also has been shown to leach carcinogenic chemicals into hot food when used for food packaging. Much of Baltimore’s foam trash 554 E Fort Avenue is incinerated in South Baltimore, releasing these chemicals into the local atmosphere. Ashley Pena – Student Representative on the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners Dr. Andrea Bowden

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi

These are the words that Ashley Pena lives by. The first Latina Student Commissioner on the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners feels that she is “accepted by adults on the board as just another school board member.” She says that she wants students to be heard – their experiences, their issues and their ideas. “I want to create change in this city-so that ALL students have the best education.” She gives voice to student concerns and meets with community members to promote understanding. She reads, gets the facts, and is able to synthesize ideas and present them cogently.

Ashley went through a rigorous vetting process last spring conducted by the Association of Student Councils of Baltimore City. She completed a written application, essay and interview at school headquarters and was selected by a panel of administrators and educators.

Ranked 7th in her class with a GPA of 3.97, Ashley is a scholar. She is an officer of the National Honor Society. She places on the Honor Roll each quarter and has won numerous awards for scholarship, leadership, character and service through our Shining Stars Awards. She is a member of AVID college preparatory program and assists her classmates in being as good as she is.

Ashley has amassed 155.5 service learning hours in multiple activities: environmental restoration of Chesapeake Bay, Days of Service, Christmas Child gifts for overseas, International Fair, Cat Rescue and BARCS, assisting teachers, acting as a guide for visitors, and working with community groups like CASA for immigrant rights and Women’s HERstory month. Ashley has represented Digital Harbor at major events because she is articulate and well versed in issues.

Ms. Gluth says, “Ashley Pena is an imaginative and determined student- and a born leader.” She is President of the Class of 2018, and is preparing for Senior Inauguration on September 29. She was recently elected President of the Student Government Association, having served as Vice President junior year. She has attended Baltimore City Student Council meetings and state conferences. She is a leader in City Life Club and Environmental Club as well as a member of the Green Team, Babysitting Club, Latinx, and SPIRIT. She has even been boys’ soccer manager.

Ashley’s family immigrated from El Salvador 18 years ago and she was born a year later. Although a full United States citizen, she feels empathy for students who might be adversely affected by limitations on the DACA, the Dream Act. She has participated in peaceful demonstrations in Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. Ashley said, “I want to make a difference. I want to increase positivity and to improve communication and student voice and relationships with the community. She describes herself as “dependable, tenacious, and intelligent.” We agree.

Domino Sugar Sponsors DHHS Robotics Team

Peter O’Malley, Vice President of Corporate Relations at American Sugar Refining, Inc. announced that DOMINO SUGAR will sponsor the Digital Harbor Robotics Team through a corporate donation of $2,000. Mr. Ken Boone, Career and Technology teacher, has been the advisor of the award-winning “Electric Sheep” (RAM is the DHHS mascot – got it?) for a dozen years. The team has placed in competitions in local and regional events -including those hosted by Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Boone says, “Thanks to everyone who has supported the Electric Sheep STEM/Robotics Club over the years. We plan to use the donation from DOMINO to buy equipment and materials.” You can contact Mr. Boone at [email protected] Page 8 - October 2017 FederalHillBaltimore.org Federal Hillsider

Digital Harbor Community Cookout The first (and hopefully annual) COMMUNITY COOKOUT was held Friday, September 22nd from 5-7 PM on Digital Way and in the cafeteria. We had community members, political leaders, BCPS leaders, faculty, student leaders, athletes, and club representatives in attendance: SGA, NHS, Class of 2018, robotics team, cheerleaders, baseball, soccer, football, volleyball. Judging by the plates used and food consumed- about 175-195 youth and adults attended over the course of the evening!

This was the second activity of the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership Grant PROJECT RESPECT. The goal of the project is to foster better relationships with community people by engaging in activities that benefit both groups. The first activity was a community tour for high school prep 9th graders – led by Mr. Rufus Lusk, neighbor and advisory board member.

Adoptable AARFies – Skip and Toffee

Skip Hi, my name is Skip. I’m think I’m half Cairn terrier and half Chihuhua, but I might have a few other things mixed in there too - I’m not telling! Whatever I’m a mix of, I don’t shed and I have a pretty adorable underbite, if I do say so myself. Right now I’m taking time out from one of my favorite things to do: run around the house with my foster brother. Then we usually nap. Great fun! I love having dog friends, don’t you? I think I’d do best in a home without any human children, but if you have other pups, that would be A-OK with me.

I like adult people, and I like to learn things from people. The nice people at AARF have started training me, and they say I’m doing such a great job learning my manners! I hope the people in my new home will continue my training. I already know “sit,” and I’m working on learning “down,” but I bet there’s a lot more things we could learn together, especially if you bring some of those yummy things the humans call “treats”! I’m already crate trained and house trained.

If you’d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this website -http://www.animalalliesrescue.org/adoption-application and choose me—Skip! My adoption fee is $350 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies and distemper/ parvo vaccinations, FelV/FIV testing (kitties), deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, microchip, boarding and transportation costs if applicable, along with a free* trial offer for 30 days of 24PetWatch pet insurance!

Toffee Do you like toffee? I hope you do, because that’s my name! I’m a beautiful two-year-old kitty, weighing in at only eight pounds. That means I’m the perfect size to sit on your lap and cuddle, which is just about my favorite thing to do.

I love every person I have ever met, and I’m happiest when I’m around people. But when I’m alone I entertain myself playing with toys. One of my favorite toys is a hair tie, and I will play fetch with it.

I have a very unique feature – a cleft lip. It doesn’t affect my health at all, but my foster mom thinks it makes me super cute. I hope you agree!

I don’t have many dislikes. I am afraid of the vacuum cleaner, but that makes me like most kitties!

I have perfect litter box manners and my foster mom thinks I am one of the sweetest cats she has ever met. I’m trusting and affectionate, but I’m also playful and silly.

I know I would make a new person or family very happy. I hope that’s you!

If you’d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this website -http:// www.animalalliesrescue.org/adoption-application and choose me - Toffee! Beyond the Hill - Adventures in Global Home Cooking October: Brazil By Andy Monick

For October, we will explore an incredibly simple recipe for a traditional dessert from Brazil: brigadeiros.

Brigadeiros are ubiquitous in Brazil today. These treats are enjoyed all across the country by children and adults alike. A staple at birthday parties, their appearance and texture lies somewhere between a truffle and a bite of fudge.

In this straightforward recipe, condensed milk is reduced with butter for richness and cocoa powder for a deep, chocolate flavor. For cosmetic appeal, the balls can be rolled inthe topping of your choice – although confectioner’s sprinkles are a standby, the only limit is your imagination.

Enjoy! Meeting the Team of Veterans Running Baltimore BikeShare By Kevin Lynch, SouthBMore.com In February, the media was invited to meet the team at Corps Logistics at its facility at 2900 Waterview Ave in Westport. Corps Logistics is the veteran-owned and veteran-run company that is subcontracted by Bewegen Technologies and Baltimore City to operate Baltimore's BikeShare program which launched last fall. Corps Logistics was started in 2013 by Jim Duffney, a first sergeant in the New Jersey Air National Guard, with a goal of creating job opportunities for veterans. Corps Logistics was awarded the contract for Baltimore BikeShare in 2015, after which Duffney began to assemble his team and find a location to operate the business. He met Sagamore Development’s Erin May, who offered Corps Logistics a free place to operate at a former Westport concrete facility which was owned by Sagamore. “We wanted to help Baltimore BikeShare, and we liked Jim’s passion and his desire to work with The Baltimore Station (TBS),” said May.
