Hymn - Sing Praise to God Who Has Shaped, vs. 1, 3, 4

Pastoral Prayer Hymn: Amazing Grace

Scripture: Genesis 1: 1 - 13

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

About Today’s Anthem We look again to Broadway this week with the song “The Color Purple” from the musical of the same name, and the book by . It tells the 30-year story of a traumatized and abused Celie through music that blends jazz, blues and gospel with pop sensibilities. The music and lyrics were composed by an outstanding trio: , and . Bray (b. 1956) is a songwriter, drummer and producer who enjoyed a long musical partnership with concluding with their work on “Like a Prayer.” Russell, (b. 1949) has a diverse musical range and the ability to shift between musical genres and combine styles. This opportunity allowed her to “paint with broad strokes using lots of colors, which no one was trying to fit into a radio format.” Willis (1947-2019) turned a journalism degree into a career as a songwriter, multimedia artist, set designer, writer, director and collector. She may be best known for writing the theme song for . An entertaining and informative conversation of this trio describing their 5-year collaboration is available and highly recommended on YouTube: Building Broadway: Songwriters Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell & Allee Willis on THE COLOR PURPLE. The song lyrics describe Celie’s sister’s description of God: “…God is inside you and everyone else…God is the flowers and everything else…Like the color purple, Where do it come from? Open your eyes, Look what God has done.” We are grateful to guest soloist Zariyah Happonen, cousin of Shannon O'Bent, for sharing her musical gifts with us for this anthem.
