The hatred comes from being taught from a young age that it’s not ok to be soft, to cry, to have feelings and to not be tough. The self-hatred is then projected out on women and gay men.

It is about power; it is about compensating for a feeling of not having control over one’s life and blaming women for that feeling as well, most likely, as other groups of people. It results in dehumanizing women (in other words turning women into “toys” or other sorts of objects).

It’s about self-loathing and hating the vulnerable parts of themselves.

But if I did, I could make a heck of a lot better case for is for sexual assault than for anything else, including murder. Because a thread going through some of the stories I’m reading is “I couldn’t tell anyone as long as he was still alive.”

At one place I worked, another woman here, whom I liked but didn’t really know well, old me out of the blue that she had been raped while in high school. And of course had never reported it. Had never even told anyone about it until she told me. But she had just learned that her rapist — who was a popular student athlete, and of course bigger and stronger than she — and gee, doesn’t this all sound familiar — had just been executed for something else (Unlike way too many others, he had grown into a violent criminal rather than someone outwardly respectable and had nally been caught.) She didn’t say, as some other women have said, that his death freed her to tell someone, that it was as if a weight had been lifted o her, but somehow I got that.

If I were arguing in a debate, I would say that if A kills B, we cannot bring B back to like by executing A. But if A rapes B, it is just a possibility that we can give B back something of what A took away by executing him.

No, I still don’t believe in capital punishment, But I could make a case.

It sounds as though it’s a “must see.” He describes exactly what Trump oers to his supporters and how it was that this “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” with the IQ of 92 and the Emotional IQ of a toddler .. is now squatting in the Oval Oce. Trump is a genius in one single domain — reaching those who live only in the mass culture — and “lighting them up.” I think it’s perhaps the best description of what we’re up against that I’ve heard to date … and you can’t beat that which you don’t understand. And … you can’t reach those whom you don’t understand. I’m going to go see the lm this weekend.

Was just reading and re- tweeting so many of what folks had posted, sharing their stories. There is so much pain and courage in that thread. I hope everyone goes to read it and give their support.

I’ve said for years that we women and girls are hunted. Our mothers and sisters. Our daughters and friends. Ourselves.

It hurts. Always.

In spite of that we rise. We stand up, own our voices and our right to speak. And in doing so we speak for so many who can not. For ourselves, for all of them, we’re going to take down this President and his GOP enablers if it’s the last thing we do.

Voting is only six short weeks away. There is much we can do between then and now to make sure that a Blue Wave washes much GOP lth away.

My issue was not with his guilt or innocence, but rather with the process by which Democratic “leadership” rushed to assumptions and judgment .. in advance of very much actual data. I don’t know if he was guilty .. but I do know that “tours” can be a little “raucous” and the jokes are sometimes not all that funny when you wake up in the morning. I worked for a rock n’ roll sound company and too little sleep loosens inhibitions. So my beef was that the Democrats desperately needed to be “dierent” than the GOP at a moment in time when Roy Moore was running, and Franken appeared to me to have been chosen as a sacricial lamb? And now we’ll never know. Just sayin’ …

If you go, you will get free treatment for injuries, whatever pregnancy or disease prophylaxis your state covers (sorry, I’m not familiar with details outside my own state), and referral for services. Sooner is better in regards to the various prophylaxis options.

There will be sucient residual damage from a rape that you don’t need to nd yourself pregnant with your rapist’s child, or “gifted” with a venereal or blood bourne disease. And it’s easy for me to say and type in a moment of calm and reason .. and much more dicult to do in the middle of trauma. But the fallout does become less … if one follows DragonyInTheSun’s advice.

But I bring this up because so many victims Do Not Know what exactly is involved when they go to the hospital after being raped. They don't know what the laws are and they don't know what services they can be provided even if they are never ever going to report. There are women who come into the emergency room, get painkillers and Plan B and leave, because that's what they want and that's what need. Look up SAFE/SANE.

I'm a registered rape crisis counselor in the State of New York. I want people to know this option exists.

The really frustrating thing is that so many states have a short statute of limitations on sexual assault. There are times when the lab work is done on the rape kit, but there is no hit on the DNA until years later when the perp is arrested on some other charges and the DNA is put into the database. By then, the statute of limitations will have run.

The was a radio program tonite talking about this, that basically men who come forward with that claim are now way more likely to be believed. They also told about the Catholic parents who themselves were victims of Catholic clergy that are bringing suit to protect their children currently in Catholic schools.

I/we hope that this current intense story will bring women over that tipping point, that society will more and more tend to believe and support women and children way more than it has in the recent past.

I/we hope this is the change we seek, that we are seeing just this in real time.

It was a 19 year old man my family had taken in to help. I told my older sister and she told my parents. The boy left but stole my mother’s jewelry on the way out.

My whole family, including me, still believes helping other is the right thing to do.

The worst part was later realizing how my ignorance and desire to be liked was used against me in the most foul manner I can think of. Trust is still an issue for me.

I was paralyzed with fear. I was a block from my house. When I got home n told my mom, her rst question was if his penis (she actually said thing or dick but I cant remember which) was big. As if I would know. Police were called, but nothing happened. They treated it like, well there's weirdos out there.

In these (and, well, other ...) cases, I could honestly say I ‘knew’ … but, well, after exposing myself to the painful sharing, I have to honestly say that I didn’t really know …

Which of the women (some decent share) I deal with have gone through traumas of sexual assault that impact how they deal with me/others due to the pain/challenges/ordeals they have been through?

While I know of situations where I have stepped in/acted to preempt/stop assaults and abuse, how have I been (unaware, blindly) inactive and ‘complicit’ through failure to act?

The comment isn’t meant to be ‘all about me’ but is an attempt to express an attempted understanding of the importance of such powerfully painful ‘sharing’ to help change society and individuals behaviors/norms/etc to reduce this into the future.

Dr. Ford is a hero. The women who came forward to speak about Donald Trump are heroes. The women who have functioned through life — whether or not they have come forward to talk — have gone through the pain and the pressures as to why they ‘did not report’ are heroes.

Time to go back to Twitter to read more from heroes coming forward ...

My mom reported it because I came home in tears every day for months, because he’d shout vulgar things at me from his car. He thought it was funny that he made me cry. She reported it to the principal. He said “boys will be boys”. I was told by the harasser and other kids at school that I’m fat and ugly and I should be happy someone wanted to be my boyfriend. He was a maggot who liked to make underclassmen cry. I know that now. I also know that it doesn’t matter the abuse or harassment, from Wells Fargo to smaller venues…it’s all my fault. Because it happened to me. I have cPTSD. He’s still part of a family that’s a pillar of the very small community, and I should just get over it.

Every time I was assaulted (both physically and sexually), I knew it would always be viewed as my fault (even though I knew it wasn’t), there was no help to be had, the law was not on my side. There were enough horror stories of female victims who had dared to come forward being blamed, slut shamed, and accused of lying, their entire lives completely picked apart and demolished. Girls/women were taught they had to just bear it and say nothing.

We had to unlearn this as we gained maturity, lost friends and even loves. And, we had to become those, as fathers to teach our son’s (the age of Kavanaugh) to be better. With major aid from his mother, it is nice to know he is a far more advance than his father once was. If he has a son, may the change continue.

It was so impressive to me that I did my Master’s thesis on the prevalence of sexual assault in a family practice setting. The numbers are the same that every researcher comes up with — 20-25% of women have been raped or rape was attempted.

It was astonishing then, and deeply sad that the numbers haven’t changed since.

my wife is a survivor of rape as well. she was humiliated by her catholic family and a St. Louis police who saw women as madonnas or whores. which is still the way we see them. if we dont do something conscious to change that notion, it continues to aect our daily life and daily thoughts.

the family still blames her, even after 40 years. one is a catholic and the other is a noncatholic catholic.

When the oldest cousin nally told someone, she was accused of being a slut and wanting to destroy the family. No one believed her. It wasn’t until the “perfect angel” cousin said he started molesting her at four that the adults went “Oh.” So they had a family get-together where they lined up all the abused children and had him apologize to them—then said it was all and good and smacked their hands together to indicate it was done. He continued to molest girls at family reunions, get-togethers, etc., and no one stopped him. The girls knew how well talking about it went the last time, and didn’t bring it up again. Years later, one of the younger cousins learned about “bad touch” in their elementary-school class. She told the teacher, and it escalated fast...sort of. The police said that, despite the numbers he molested, the “perfect angel” cousin was the only one who could testify against him and get him convicted. She couldn’t force herself to do it, so he walked free to molest again.

Every single child in that family, male and female, were taught that it’s pointless to even bring it up. Nothing will happen to the perpetrator, and the child will be accused of “killing the family”. Think of the message that sends to the girls—and to the boys.

She wanted details — I ended up in the bathroom wanting to vomit and did NOT give her the f’ing details. Some years later, I get a call that they put an oer on a home in the retirement community one UM (uncle molester) lived. I got a 2nd call “Are you okay if we bump into him?” Numb, I say “whatever.” (What “normal” mother would even think of moving by the molester of their daughter in the rst place!) They move. My father plays golf/cards with UM, they go to concerts, dinners, etc. for SEVEN YEARS. I gain weight and live in a numb state — get gastric bypass because my health is failing. (Stung can do that to ya.)

Father dies. Mother moves back into our area. I ask her, “Were you ever uncomfortable being around UM?” Her response, “Yeah, but we only thought it was touchy feely.” “You never gave us the details.” “Why didn’t YOU say no to our moving!” If one’s own parents don’t take it seriously WTF?

(Note: both of my kids were molested but as soon as they told me — therapy and police report! We could do nothing about what happened to me 40 years before but having my parents treat it like it was nothing — SHIT.)

I get it why so many women and men say nothing, whether assaulted by family, strangers, etc. I get it why so many are dealing with PTSD right now. I get it why we go into a rage when we see Dr. Ford being re-victimized. Fuck the KGGOP.

Not one of us. And the question that leads me to ask is: why? What is it about women that makes so many men look at us as nothing more than prey?

The guy I married years ago wasn’t like this. He had his faults (I did divorce him, after all), but he was basically a good guy. The man I’ve been with for almost 21 years isn’t like this. He’s a scary- looking dude for many: big (six ve), shaved head, earring, tats to there & back, rides a big bike, lifts weights & works out on a heavy bag & has the muscle to show for it, swears like a longshoreman, has a Scorpio’s lack of patience for fools. But he’s always been a erce feminist & one of the kindest men I’ve ever known. So what makes these two & all the other wonderful men I’ve known in my life like they are, and the others — the creeps, the abusers, the rapists, the entitled users, the monsters — like they are?

Maybe it’s time we gured that out once & for all. And xed it.

Fear of being caught, charged & imprisoned doesn’t keep my partner or the other men I know from harassing, abusing or raping women (or other men, sexual abuse being an equal-opportunity crime). I know the answers are varied & (in some cases, anyway) complex, and I also know that the possibility of real punishment would discourage some of the perpetrators, but certainly not all.

They were taught women were not sexual objects but were equal to them in the amount of respect they were to give to other men. They were taught that they were to be protectors and not abusers. But mostly, they were to to respect women.

BTW, my husband is one those good guys. (Like your husband, mine has the tattoos, earrings, shaved head, used to ride Harleys, works out with a ton of muscle, swears like a sailor, is a combat vet and does not suer fools gladly.) He has always appreciated women...okay he and his sister got into some pretty big ghts when they were kids and they can still get into arguments today. But he was taught women were to be respected and were not sex objects/toys/etc. He has treated women as he wanted his mother and sister to be treated. He has always been for women’s rights.

And several times he has put himself in the middle of a situation where a woman was being abused (verbally)/attacked/etc. and had no qualms doing it. I watched as he went after another big guy in the hospital who was trying to play grab ass with the nurses and refusing to leave after hours. My husband was in a cast from his toes to his groin, in a wheelchair, and was screaming so loud at the guy while chasing him in the wheelchair and waving his crutch. Nurses all loved him for that. As he said, ain’t no one fucking with my nurses and any women on my watch.

Maybe I’ll call her this weekend & tell her I appreciate what a good job she did raising her son (both of them, actually; my brother-in-law is a really good dude, too). It makes you wonder what goes on in those homes where the rapists & abusers are raised, doesn’t it. And how we as a society can change that.

One of my best friends is a First Nations’ woman involved in working with the men on her reserve, where the violence against women & kids is astronomical. She & her group are trying to get the men back in touch with what she calls their “inner warrior” & a set of beliefs & behaviours that stress protecting their women & children instead of abusing them. So much comes back to self-worth & a strong sense of identity. But that’s another post for another time . . . I can only handle so much anger & sadness at once . . . . thanks for your thoughtful reply!

Not bragging, or looking for kudos, as I only did the right thing, just what I am expected to not do, in this case.

So, why not? I gure it’s because I never witnessed my dad ‘forcing’ himself in any way on my mom. (My mom would not have tolerated that anyway.) So I learned while growing up that women (and children), and anyone who I or anyone else might be able to force to do anything, demanded, just by virtue of their existence, respect. Eventually, as an older teen, and then an adult this, became a clear ‘no means no’ (not even maybe) in my view of life.

Sadly, in so many cases, maybe most in this case, children learn what they live. Maybe learning any rationalization for rape is something picked up on while growing up.

They shared the drive way with another cabin where a single man lived full time.

There was only 1 bedroom in the cabin, so her dad would erect a tent in the woods for her to sleep. Said every night the man in the other cabin would come to her tent with porn magazines, wearing shorts with his junk hanging out. She never let the man do anything to her, and never told her parents because they “adored” him, and would believe him, not her.

Another friend, a 28 year old who has a traumatic brain injury from a car crash when she was 8, was raped by 2 older boys when she was a young girl, the towns star athletes. When she told her parents, they said she was lying, when the town found out, they said she was lying as well. She still sobs when she tells me this.

Fuck you Donald Trump, you self admitted sexual predator.

And a fuck you to every republican in the House and Senate who stand behind Trump and Kavanaugh.

Even now I expect people to just snicker about it and in any case, never ever relevant. Is it even rape? When I was in my thirties, I told my mom after I had spent some time in therapy. She went all murder she wrote and tried to nd our baby sitter from three decades ago. My wife then was furious that I would do such a thing and she laughed at me. My ex was horribly abused as a child and later by her rst husband. As an NCO, I learned over time that there wasn't one single woman I knew in my life that hadn't been abused. I went to bat for one of my troops who had been passed around in a hotel room by a number of my coworkers and was immediately given a change in station and it cost me a promotion twice after. I was never treated the same unto my retirement. My own personal story was just a joke to anyone I ever told. I’ve only tried to bring it up on a few occasions when I thought someone would give a shit and though I understand why it is largely just held in contempt by people who certainly were much more traumatized.

Men will circle wagons for guys that they would gladly beat the shit out of on any given night just for critisizing their hair style or talking to “their” woman, but it doesn't matter how enamored in or how much they respect a woman among them they will toss her to the wolves without so much as a thought. And then they will listen intently while the perpetrators brag about it over some suds. Something else is that few men ever fucking grow out of the boy sexually. That is why I know that Dr. Ford is telling the truth and IMO she is more a hero in my eyes than 99 percent of any of the men I have ever known. Most especially myself.

A lot of women I have tried to encourage to confront their abusers often express the same thing. They felt like they were making more of it than it was. Unlike myself, they inevitably wound up suering even more over time and of course then felt it was their fault. I only ever broke trust once and I regret it to this day. Nothing but more pain came from it for her and got me in a world of trouble. Psychology is dangerous in the hands of an amateur.

One of the exercises that used to knock him out was the one where the leader would say “OK — everyone close your eyes. Raise your hand if...” and read a list of things. Vastly more than half the women would raise the hand when the question was “if you’ve ever been molested” Nearly as many for “.. ever been raped”. Only the group leader ever saw how many hands were up. he says that it was a ‘normal’ thing.

Gods — what kind of society do we live in where such a thing is normal?

The physical pain from that injury while absolutely horrendous, is as NOTHING compared to the mental and emotional trauma inicted. Physical injuries heal rapidly. Mental and Emotional trauma takes far far far longer and it never really “goes away”. There are ALWAYS triggers. It is PTSD with all kinds of add ons.

I cannot truly understand it. I can say as a combat vet that I can feel the edges of it, have a vague notion of what that is like. I imagine ‘nam vets would know it better if they were spat on upon returning. This is far worse.

At the time these were all reasons not to say anything and certainly not to report anything. At the time there was little talk of “date rape” and certainly none at all when it came to two men. I don’t know whether all of it would have played out as I’d imagined but I didn’t think I could face nding out.

The only silver lining was that I conded in a friend who actually did believe me, but that’s as far as it ever went until I was almost 20 years older and in recovery and in therapy and nally ready to deal with it.

You’re quite right; mourning is denitely part of the process. It’s not surprising to me that I began to face this issue in the aftermath of losing my partner to AIDS. When you grieve a loss like that all of the other losses in your life surface as well.

I quit without notice as soon as I had another job. This was in the early 1980s. It never occurred to me that what he was doing was illegal or that I could win a lawsuit against him. I can see that it might have unforeseen negative consequences and backlash, though, so feel free to let me know if you think it’s a terrible idea and should not be done. This, and the MeToo movement in general really makes it seem as if something similar has happened to just about every woman.

So my idea is to tweet at female Republican politicians like Collins, Murkowski, Blackburn, etc. as well as female conservative pundits like Anne Coulter and just about any woman still on Fox: “Why didn’t you report it?

Chances are it did happen to them and they didn’t report it. They probably just refused to think about it as conservatives seem to do with many other issues. So mentioning it to them might actually force them to confront it emotionally for the rst time. So often, Republicans don’t seem to care about issues unless it aects them personally, and if any conservative politician buried an incident like this in their subconscious, it’s like it never happened to them, therefore it doesn’t aect them unless they are forced to face the fact that it actually did happen.

And with the politicians, it might actually fake them out enough to think someone might actually have found out what happened to them, so they might feel like they need to make a public statement about it.

The patient was anesthetized & the OR team & surgeons surrounded her at the OR table. The prominent elderly surgeon invited me to come up to the table & then, with gloved hands in the air, he shoved his leg up between my legs from the back and pushed his crotch against me. I looked in a panic back at my clinical instructor & saw fear on her face. "No help there," I thought. I turned back & saw sad compassion in the scrub tech's eyes above her mask. I didn't tell because he had power & I had no training or supportive policies on how to deal with this. I also read the nonverbal messages from the women who witnessed it: "We have to put up with this, but I am sorry it happened." My instructor never talked about it afterwards. Thank God it is no longer 1975 & we have evolved...oh. Never mind....

They have nothing to do with sex other then sex is the weapon used to accomplish the power trip for the perpetrator. These are crimes of assertion of power over the victim which the perpetrator is not entitled to. The victim is entitled to interpersonal respect from any and all who they meet and engage with, and command over how their body is used. It may take the victim some time to gain the measure of maturity to assert their personhood, but they cannot be faulted for taking that time and speaking up when they are ready no matter how long it takes.

These acts were committed on the perpetrators timetable. Our culture often seeks to victimize the victim again by insisting on a reporting to a legal system on a timetable enforced by that legal system which is another power grab in the end through its processes. There is a problem because the legal system is ill-equipped to deal with the outcome of these crimes successfully and that is why we see disbelief and the minimizing which always becomes a big part of these stories as soon as they become public. Unfortunately the perpetrators don’t get the message that what they did was wrong unless the victim can take her power back directly because the talk is always about the weapon and not the actual crime itself. Our Mr. Trump is included as he proves again and again in this group of perpetuators who don’t understand that their power trip is what is wrong with their behavior.

What I know from the work I have done as a volunteer with our local “sexual assault resource center” is that the tremendous courage it takes to go public with these stories marks the hard fought personal growth these women who have come forward, have attained and I applaud them profoundly for what they are doing. My hope is that the general culture can begin to understand what these power crimes are actually about and that that will help us to deal with them more successfully, and make them a thing that does not happen anymore. There deantly needs to be a cultural shift where we teach our children and ourselves better boundaries of where their personhood extends to, and where their neighbors personhood begins. I remember something about good fences make for better neighbors, it applies just as well in this interpersonal dimension of our personalities. I was raped by an adult man, a neighbor, at age 3. He was about 40. I have a memory of trying to tell his wife what he had done to me, though I can’t remember exactly what I articulated, I was 3! She hit me across the face and told me to “never lie about someone like that ever again”. And over time, those memories got repressed. I went on and lived my life. After several months of severe depression in my late 20s, the memories came back, literally 6 weeks after the statute of limitations had passed.

You want to talk about not reporting? I barely reported my emotional state to the outside world for 25 years after that. I understand at such a fundamental level what victims go through. My story happened so early in my life, I actually can’t fully understand people who weren’t victimized. It changes you. It gives you insights both wonderful and terrifying. It rips things from your life with cruelty and gives you gifts of empathy that are overwhelming.

The world wants to throw victims out with the garbage. We are not garbage. We are some of the kindest, most sensitive souls on Earth. When I think of the phrase “the meek shall inherit the Earth”, I think of abuse and assault and rape victims pretty much rst in line for that.
