Peace in Vietnam! Beheiren: Transnational Activism and Gi Movement in Postwar Japan 1965-1974
PEACE IN VIETNAM! BEHEIREN: TRANSNATIONAL ACTIVISM AND GI MOVEMENT IN POSTWAR JAPAN 1965-1974 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POLITICAL SCIENCE AUGUST 2018 By Noriko Shiratori Dissertation Committee: Ehito Kimura, Chairperson James Dator Manfred Steger Maya Soetoro-Ng Patricia Steinhoff Keywords: Beheiren, transnational activism, anti-Vietnam War movement, deserter, GI movement, postwar Japan DEDICATION To my late father, Yasuo Shiratori Born and raised in Nihonbashi, the heart of Tokyo, I have unforgettable scenes that are deeply branded in my heart. In every alley of Ueno station, one of the main train stations in Tokyo, there were always groups of former war prisoners held in Siberia, still wearing their tattered uniforms and playing accordion, chanting, and panhandling. Many of them had lost their limbs and eyes and made a horrifying, yet curious, spectacle. As a little child, I could not help but ask my father “Who are they?” That was the beginning of a long dialogue about war between the two of us. That image has remained deep in my heart up to this day with the sorrowful sound of accordions. My father had just started work at an electrical laboratory at the University of Tokyo when he found he had been drafted into the imperial military and would be sent to China to work on electrical communications. He was 21 years old. His most trusted professor held a secret meeting in the basement of the university with the newest crop of drafted young men and told them, “Japan is engaging in an impossible war that we will never win. -

New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry
Start Me Up: New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry Master Thesis MSc Business Administration Management and Entrepreneurship in the Creative Industries Faculty of Economics and Business, Amsterdam Business School Myra Alice Wilhelmina Ruers - 11903929 Supervisor: Dr. M. Piazzai 21st of June 2018 Statement of Originality This document is written by Student Myra Ruers, who declares to take full responsibility for the contents of this document. I declare that the text and the work presented in this document is original and that no sources other than those mentioned in the text and its references have been used in creating it. The Faculty of Economics and Business is responsible solely for the supervision of completion of the work, not for the contents. 2 Abstract The music industry is extremely vibrant, diverse, and inherently uncertain. Record labels are the main intermediaries in this industry, facilitating the connection between the creative input from musicians and the demand from the consumers. Due to many technological advancements, the barriers to entry have decreased significantly, hence making it easier to enter this industry as a new record label. Additionally, strategic integration options allow existing firms to start new ventures by acquiring or initiating subsidiaries. This research focuses on the multiple modes through which new entry can be commenced. These entry modes all have their own characteristics and consequences for the configurations of the industry. The likelihood of entry, the subsequent performance of new record labels, and the effects on the diversity of the output are the main topics that are explored. In this study, databases storing longitudinal information on musical releases are used to compile a dataset with the necessary information on new record labels. -

Time-Loop Chronicles The Day the Earth Fell Backwards Title: The Time-Loop Chronicles – The Day the Earth Fell Backwards Paperback: 318 pages Language: English ISBN-10: 978-1548297091 ISBN-13: 10:1548297097 1st edition Large Print April 2017 Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 inches Publisher: Create Space Author: John V. Panella Page | 1 Time-Loop Chronicles About Author John V. Panella has been writing off and on for decades. Back in the early 70’s he dabbled in writing scripts for television shows and movies for personal enjoyment. It was then in the 80’s he began to get serious and started writing about potential errors in our historical archives and records. This led him into a series of writings and his first book dealing with codes, prophecies, history, religion and spiritual belief paradigms. For the last 25-years, he has spent a lot of his time sharing his discoveries, writing hundreds of articles, magazines, along with many books. Then one day he decided why not go back to his past and leave the non- fiction genre behind for a while and get back to his first love, Science Fiction and Time Travel. Instead of trying to fit all the pieces of our past, why not change a few of them with scenarios that make you wonder, what if this happened, or that happened, and what if what we have been told is simply not true? After spending so much dedicated time trying to make sure everything he had written was accurate, he decided, why not throw it all up in the air, and let the chips fall where they may. -

The Destruction of Art
1 The destruction of art Solvent form examines art and destruction—through objects that have been destroyed (lost in fires, floods, vandalism, or, similarly, those that actively court or represent this destruction, such as Christian Marclay’s Guitar Drag or Chris Burden’s Samson), but also as an undoing process within art that the object challenges through form itself. In this manner, events such as the Momart warehouse fire in 2004 (in which large hold- ings of Young British Artists (YBA) and significant collections of art were destroyed en masse through arson), as well as the events surrounding art thief Stéphane Breitwieser (whose mother destroyed the art he had stolen upon his arrest—putting it down a garbage disposal or dumping it in a nearby canal) are critical events in this book, as they reveal something about art itself. Likewise, it is through these moments of destruction that we might distinguish a solvency within art and discover an operation in which something is made visible at a time when art’s metaphorical undo- ing emerges as oddly literal. Against this overlay, a tendency is mapped whereby individuals attempt to conceptually gather these destroyed or lost objects, to somehow recoup them in their absence. This might be observed through recent projects, such as Jonathan Jones’s Museum of Lost Art, the Tate Modern’s Gallery of Lost Art, or Henri Lefebvre’s text The Missing Pieces; along with exhibitions that position art as destruction, such as Damage Control at the Hirschhorn Museum or Under Destruction by the Swiss Institute in New York. -

Social Software for Music
FACULDADE DE ENGENHARIA DA UNIVERSIDADE DO PORTO Social Software for Music Cláudio Miguel Teixeira da Costa Project Report Master in Informatics and Computation Engineering Supervisor: Ademar Aguiar (PhD) July 2009 Social Software for Music Cláudio Miguel Teixeira da Costa Project Report Master in Informatics and Computer Engineering Approved in public examination by the committee: Chair: António Lucas Soares (FEUP / PhD) ____________________________________________________ External Examiner: António Rito Silva (IST / PhD) Internal Examiner: Ademar Aguiar (FEUP / PhD) 31st July 2009 Abstract The work presented in this report refers to the project “Social Software for Music”, developed in cooperation with INESC Porto and Palco Principal. The project had a duration of 4 months (between March and June 2009) and has as goal to improve Palco Principal, a social software platform focused in the music industry. After a study of Palco's platform, as well as of the several other platforms existing, it was possible to understand the needs and opportunities of Palco Principal, in order to level and even excel its competitors. From this study, three main areas of focus were elected: music recommendation, music classification and event management. A brief analysis on the context of this systems is made, from the definition and applications of social software to the context of the music industry and the Music Information Research field of study. Several aspects of music recommendation and classification are studied, as well as their applications and associated issues. Also a study of the existing recommendation techniques is developed, along with the metrics used to evaluate their success. We then try to understand how music classification is made and we explore some novel forms of classification, apart from the traditional genre categorization: acoustic fingerprinting and mood classification.
