Date : 02/07/2007 The OCLC-AMICAL RESPOND project: Leveraging WorldCat to connect international American universities Jeff Hiroshi Gima The American University of Paris, France / AMICAL and Arthur E. Smith OCLC, Inc., Dublin, Ohio, USA Meeting: 96-2 Document Delivery and Resource Sharing Section (2) Simultaneous Interpretation: Yes WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS: 73RD IFLA GENERAL CONFERENCE AND COUNCIL 19-23 August 2007, Durban, South Africa http://www.ifla.org/iv/ifla73/index.htm Abstract AMICAL is a consortium of American-modeled, liberal arts-oriented universities in Central and Western Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Russia. AMICAL members – who share educational frameworks, use of the English language, and key elements of their institutional missions – are trying to collaborate on the development of their library and information services and their curricular resources. In partnership with OCLC, AMICAL is implementing a pilot project called RESPOND (Resource Sharing Project for Network Discovery) in order to make AMICAL libraries’ holdings more visible to each other and to the world, to help them analyze their collections, and to increase their ability to fulfill ILL/DD requests using library resources worldwide. By partnering with OCLC and leveraging WorldCat and other existing infrastructure, RESPOND has been able to introduce a wide variety of related services in a relatively short time. The newness of all these services, as well as libraries’ diversity of locations, languages, and professional practices, has introduced many challenges. Benefits will be measured over the coming year as libraries experiment with the integration of RESPOND services into their workflow, but indirect effects such as increased communication and general cooperation are already appearing.

  • The Emergence of the American University Abroad Kyle A. Long
The Emergence of the American University Abroad Kyle A. Long Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Kyle A. Long All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Emergence of the American University Abroad Kyle A. Long This dissertation explores the relations of independent American universities abroad to one another and to American higher education through a mixed-method comparative case study of three eras (1919-1945; 1946-1990; 1991-2017). Applying insights from the study of organizations and social movements, it investigates 1) the formation, evolution, and eventual maturation of an organizational field of American universities abroad; and 2) the strategies field actors utilize to align frames about American universities abroad with values of potential supporters in the United States. The study employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze data that come from archives, news media, institutional websites, interviews, and an original database. Findings have implications for study of international higher education, American higher education, and American foreign relations. I argue that over the course of a century, the American university abroad has emerged as a distinct institution and structural feature of American higher education. Episodic cooperation among various American universities abroad has served to organize the field to the extent that its “rules” eventually became institutionalized. Instances of continuity and change in the field’s rules are often the result of pressures emanating from U.S. higher education and foreign policies. Meanwhile, the field of American universities abroad, representing the frontier of American higher education, has continually enlarged the latter’s boundaries with each successive period of global expansion.

A History of the Evolution of Nursing Research in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta from 1980 to 1998 by Denise Erin Pasieka A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing Faculty of Nursing University of Alberta © Denise Erin Pasieka, 2017 ii Abstract The purpose of this study was to trace the historical evolution of nursing research at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta between 1980 and 1998. The questions that guided this study were: What were the trends in nursing research, specifically what type of questions were studied and what research methods were utilized by researchers between 1980 and 1998? What contextual factors, internal and external, influenced the development of nursing research? What roles did key leaders play to foster a climate conducive to research pursuits and in accessing/developing funding opportunities for nursing research? Historical methods were used to answer these questions. The primary data sources used in this study included eleven faculty produced scholarly reports on research and scholarly activities, which were supplemented with secondary data. In the reports there were 1180 listed publications (90 missing). This included 283 research- based articles, 118 non-research articles, 217 conference proceedings, 189 books/book chapters, and 221 editorials and other written work. The results showed the research production increased over time, that research topics shifted towards a clinical foci, that research methods became more sophisticated with an almost equal use of qualitative and quantitative methods by the late 1990s, that the majority of researchers in the Faculty of Nursing worked in research teams, and that there was a shift from publishing in minor nursing journals to major, international nursing journals over time.

University of Alberta Reading Disorders of Inattention and Hyperactivity: A Normalization Project by Gregory James Bowden A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology ©Gregory James Bowden Spring 2012 Edmonton, Alberta Permission is hereby granted to the University of Alberta Libraries to reproduce single copies of this thesis and to lend or sell such copies for private, scholarly or scientific research purposes only. For Alison Abstract Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in children. It and its antecedents have received sociological focus since the 1970s, in studies of how diagnosis and subsequent interventions serve to manage deviant behaviours, as well as accounting for experiences of a diagnosis whose legitimacy has been consistently questioned. Taking methodological cues from Michel Foucault‘s exploratory endeavours, this dissertation aims to provide some clarity on sociological conceptions of disorders of inattention and hyperactivity and their relationship to other authoritative claims about such disorders. Sociological explanations of these disorders remain in tension with claims from clinical research about these disorders as objective entities as well as with skeptical claims from popular literature which deny the existence and legitimacy of such disorders.

CHAPTER 2 Insights into Faculty-Librarian Collaborations around the Framework Findings from the 2018 Co-design Survey Michael Stöpel* Christine Furno* User Services Librarian, American Reference and Instruction University of Paris, France Librarian, American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Livia Piotto* Reference and Instruction Krasimir Spasov* Coordinator, Frohring Library, Information Literacy Librarian, John Cabot University, Rome, Italy American University in Bulgaria Tatev Zargaryan* Library Systems and E-services Librarian, American University of Armenia * Authors are AMICAL Information Literacy Committee Members 21 22 Chapter 2 Introduction Since the 1980s, assessment has been one of the most frequently investigated topics in library and information science literature,1 seen by librarians as a valid tool for analyzing the effectiveness and impact of teaching. With this in mind, after the Paris workshop and the rollout of the co-designed pilot courses,2 the AMICAL Information Literacy Committee (ILC) wanted to assess whether the courses had been successful with regard to both learning and teaching and to determine new fruits the co-designing had produced. A second, but equally important, motivation was to report back to the AMICAL Consortium, which funded and supported our project from the beginning. The main goal was to collect qualitative feedback to give insight into the projects and to build a “thick description” of the teaching experience.3 In order to effectively assess the course design project, as well as provide essential feedback to our stakeholders, the ILC developed and administered a survey about the co-design experience. This survey was conducted among twenty-six participants from eleven differ- ent liberal arts institutions outside the United States that are all members of the AMICAL Consortium (appendix 2A).
