G. Wells and Aldous Huxley in the context of contemporary and modern nationally conscious discourses. Focusing on the period of 1910-1939, the present study explores the terms and strategies whereby utopian visions of a World State, premised on religion or universal governance, engage with, and contribute to, constructions of England as a specific topography, with a political culture, social hierarchies, religious sensibilities, and literary tradition. Informed by literary history, utopian theory, studies of national character and nationalism, the thesis argues that the writings of Benson, Wells and Huxley communicate an ascertainable reciprocity between these authors’ utopian imagination and national susceptibilities. The thesis investigates the ways in which the studied fictions endorse visions of a World State, offering a mediated response not only to the contemporary condition of England, but also to England’s topographic, political, and socio-cultural continuity. Of particular interest is a re- invocation of Southern England as either a fictional setting or a liminal environment for the emergence of a World State. The study also investigates the narrative anxieties about the retreat of Liberalism from the national political scene, being superseded by the restrictive regimes of a World State; and a fictional renewal of social hierarchies as nationally conscious models for efficient government. The thesis further accounts for the authorial engagements with continuity, examining Benson’s investment in dynastic rule, Wells’s hostility to revolution, and Huxley’s redefinition of the ‘English poetic mind’ to oppose the dissolution of national literary traditions in a global future. In exploring the extent to which alternative versions of England (Catholic, Cosmopolitan, Alien) dominate the visions of world unity, this thesis contends that the nationality of a World State manifests itself not in the universal ends that such visions seek to achieve, but in the nationally conscious means they press into service. The Principle of Hope. ‘The Nationality of a World State: (Re)Constructions of England in Utopian Fiction’ examines the terms and strategies whereby the utopian imagination interacts with national consciousness. Focusing on the decades between 1910 and 1939, the study explores the ways in which imaginary forms of world unity, premised on religion or universal governance, engage with, and contribute to, contemporary and modern constructions of England. Marked by a continuing renegotiation of nations in the international arena, this period provides numerous occasions that vie to unite the world and at once reinforce its divisions. While the advent of flying and radio broadcasting render national boundaries porous, the First World War redraws them quite provisionally and to more detrimental effects. The flowering of European nationalisms, coupled with the bureaucratization of nationality in the form of passports, occurs simultaneously, as new opportunities for world unity present themselves.

This paper explores the mechanism of interaction between major themes and concerns which featured in discussions of national identity, and their interpretation in the utopian novels of William Morris, Robert Hugh Benson, and Herbert Read. Arguing that News from Nowhere, The Dawn of All, and The Green Child (and, by extension, utopian fiction as a genre) contain mediated responses to current debates about the nation, the paper analyses the historical context of the timeframe between 1891 and 1935, and the methodological dichotomy of utopia and ideology which it attempts to overcome. The next three sections examine how organization of time lends itself to the interpretation of the utopian novels vis-à-vis major issues and stresses of debates surrounding national identity. It is concluded that utopian fiction as a conventional mouthpiece of radical transformations is capable of giving voice to the mutable discourse of a dominant ideology and debating the national agenda with nearly equal force. This apparent connection between Anglo-Catholicism and the male homosexual subculture in the English-speaking world has often been remarked upon, but it has never been fully explored. In 1960, for example, in a pioneering study of male homosexuality in Britain, Gordon Westwood stated: Some of the contacts maintained that the highest proportion of homosexuals who are regular churchgoers favoured the Anglo-Catholic churches. ... It was not possible to confirm that suggestion in this survey, but it is not difficult to understand that the services with impressive ceremony and large choirs are more likely to appeal to homosexuals.1 More recently, in the United States, several former priests of the Episcopal church have described some of the links between homosexual men and Catholic forms of religion, on the basis of their own knowledge of Anglo-Catholic parishes.2 This essay brings together some of the historical evidence of the ways in which a homosexual sensibility has expressed itself within Anglo-Catholicism. Because of the fragmentary and ambiguous nature of much of this evidence only a tentative outline can be suggested.     MONSIGNOR ROBERT HUGH BENSON Father Martindale is to be trusted on this. His life puts before us a chainsmoking, novel­writing man of God, incapable of treachery. The clerical novelist is scarcely a latter­day phenomenon. Not only priests but Princes of the Church have turned to fiction. In the last century, both Newman and Wiseman wrote novels, as in this did Cardinal Spellman (The Foundling), though with somewhat less effect. One of the most gifted and energetic of priest story tellers was Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson. Benson was born in 1871, his father was to become Archbishop of Canterbury and Hugh himself took Anglican Orders but eventually was drawn to the Roman Catholic Church. At first disdainful of Rome, he followed a route that had been charted earlier by Newman and the scores of converts who came in his wake. Newman and his fellows in the Oxford Movement sought to see the English Church as part of the Catholic Church, emphatically not a Protestant sect, but, for many, history and theology eroded this position until there was nothing left to do but turn to Rome. Half a century later, Robert Hugh Benson began with the same conviction about the Anglican Church as Catholic, but in his case too, gradually © Ralph McInerny, 2005. and painfully, he gave it up. He became a Roman Catholic in 1903 and was ordained a priest a year later, in Rome. Any appreciation of Benson as a writer must take into account his devotional and apologetic works, but it can be said that the single motive of all his writing was to put the Roman Catholic faith compellingly before his reader.

As milestones of the global interfaith movement, American religious freedom and pluralism, and the relation of religion to modernity, the Chicago Parliaments of Religions offer a unique window through which to view this Catholic struggle at work in the religious public square created by the Parliaments and the evolution of that struggle over the course of the century framed by the two Chicago events. In relation to other religions, the Catholic Church stretched itself from an exclusivist position of being the only true and good religion to an inclusivist position of recognizing that truth and good can be present in other religions. Uniquely, Catholic involvement in the centennial Parliament made the Church stretch itself even further, beyond the exclusivist-inclusivist spectrum into a pluralist framework in which the Church acted humbly as one religion among many.
