Bernard McGuirk, Máire Ní Mhaonaigh and Peter Evans generously agreed to offer a critical reading of this book. Coral Neale provided me with valuable examples of apocalypse in films, books and the visual arts. David Fox, the ideal companion on holidays I will never take, agreed to allow me to reproduce one of his remarkable photographs for the cover, provided the print, and, following a logic that escapes me, thanked me for it. Susan Mansfield and Karen Weber saved me from unhelpful demons and from my own never-failing incompetence in all matters practical and commonsensical. Robert Hinde proofread the manuscript. Chris Woodhouse and Alex Lucini, Computer Officers at St. John’s College, miraculously never attempted to strangle me, not even once. Sue O’Reilly and Hykel Hosni suggested some valuable reading which helped me consolidate my thoughts. Rory O’Bryen let me benefit from his expertise on blondes, monkeys and digital images. David Lowe and Sonia Morillo Garcia I thank for absolutely everything. I am also ever grateful to Colin Clarkson at Cambridge University Library, who goes where my legs cannot. My students suggested I have a look at truly ghastly examples of end- of-the-world books they had read as teenagers.

On Entrepreneurial Learning, Mentoring, and the Logic of Bayes Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By William Robert Stromeyer, B.F.A., M.B.A Graduate Program in Business Administration The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Sharon A. Alvarez, Co-Advisor Raymond A. Noe, Co-Advisor Benjamin A. Campbell Robert B. Lount 1 Copyright by William Robert Stromeyer 2016 2 Abstract This dissertation is comprised of three essays that examine entrepreneurial learning, entrepreneurial mentoring, and the logic of Bayes and Bayesian analysis. The first essay delves into the cognitive mechanisms involved in learning under fundamental uncertainty by entrepreneurs engaged in the process of forming new opportunities. An examination of the emergence of the pet health insurance marketplace in the United States during the period 2002- 2012 drives a qualitative analysis that integrates propositions concerning the entrepreneurial process with theoretical assertions from the hierarchical Bayesian theory of learning. The second essay examines how entrepreneurial career mentoring, mentoring in support of a transition to entrepreneurial employment, leads to increased entrepreneurial intentions mediated by entrepreneurial self-efficacy. The final essay provides a commentary and suggestions for best usage of new techniques developed in Bayesian structural equation modeling, through a Bayesian based analysis of entrepreneurial self-efficacy. ii Acknowledgements This dissertation would not have been possible without the loving support of my family. My deepest gratitude to my advisor and dearest friend, Sharon Alvarez. Thank you for guiding me on this journey, letting me make my own mistake, but always putting me back on the right path.

A monstrous tripod, higher than many houses, striding over the young pine trees, and smashing them aside in its career; a walking engine of glittering metal, reeling now across the heather, articulate ropes of steel dangling from it, and the clattering tumult of its passage mingling with the riot of the thunder. A flash, and it came out vividly, heeling over one way with two feet in the air, to vanish and reappear almost instantly, as it seemed with the next flash, a hundred yards nearer. - H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds But who shall dwell in these worlds if they be inhabited? . Are we or they Lords of the World? . And how are all things made for man? - Kepler In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity.

Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.
